I would like to say I've tried numerous products you've reviewed on your website and I'd like to say thank you for your hard work in bringing us great reviews on buy it for life products. Its hard to trust even companies that do reviews anymore because of all the fake reviews people sometimes post up. I've ordered several products based on your expert opinion and so far all the products are excellent. I really appreciate your hard work in reviewing high quality and durable products. Keep up the great work Mr. Longworth!!

It is an effective hammer if you put it in the sheath and hold on to the sheath as the hammer handle.

You said it perfectly, it is the most versatile out there. I don’t need to make any excuses for liking it. My last one lasted for over 20 years, and I’m only replacing it because solvent got on the handle and deteriorated it and the plastic on the leg straps broke. The butt is separate from the tang so you won’t get electrocuted cutting live wire, it has a point for breaking glass, including plexiglass or anything it contacts. You can use it as a hammer by using the flat portion of the butt on the nail and holding the plastic sheath with your hand. It has a sharpener Incorporated into the perfectly designed sheath which itself you can mount vertically in four different ways. It has lashing holes and a glass filled nylon and rubber coat handle. It has a dropped and beveled point with perfect balance. I could go on. What knife out there has even three of these features in its design? Excellent product.

I grabbed my lmf2 mainly because of the fact the handle is insulated. I survey natural gas lines all through the country and run into alot of rouge hot fences. I could easily use it to move hot wire away/cut through it. Plus this thing is beefy. I haven't had to use it on any threats/wildlife yet but I believe it would do great in that regard. I have had it for around 4 years now and hasn't failed me yet

Good video, thanks. Just as a side note, batoning wood is, by far, the safest manner of splitting wood ESPECIALLY when far away from medical attention. No swinging blade involved, far more controlled motion. I’ve seen some bad injuries from splitting wood with an axe/ hatchet, etc. Never saw an injury from batoning. Just a thought. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

To use a knife handle as a hammer you should keep the sheath on so you can hold the blade. 👍

It would be good to see some testing of what the knife was actually designed to do in the first instance. Breaking plexiglass, cutting aluminium, power cables (don't have to be live lol) etc

I own a gerber lmf2. Great knife, it feels very well balanced in your hand. Good grip on the handle in cold and wet conditions. But there's some things to remember. The lmf2 is not a full tang knife because it's designed to cut electrical wires. You don't want the knife blade connected all the way through the handle to the metal part at the back so you don't get electrocuted. I would also not recommend using it as a hammer because of this. Because it's not full tang, that's the biggest weakness of it. You should not use it to chop or baton/split wood unless you have no other choice. There's video's where people tried that and beat the crap out of it in a torture test. The blade becomes loose in the handle. Is it bad quality because it can't handle that? In my opinion not. It's not full tang or designed as a bushcraft knife/for splitting large firewood. With this in mind, it's a very versatile high quality knife but it has it's limitations. Like a machete is also not recommended for fine woodcarving. Or a formula 1 car is designed for city traffic. The only thing I don't like is that the knife rattles in it's sheath.

Should check out the Schrade Schf40. Very similar design to the LMF II as Gerbers patent ran out. Electrically insulated as well plus Sk5 steel (not 420J2 as listed EVERYWHERE - I contacted schrade myself about the steel used). Fine edge, no serrations. Also the built in sharpener on the LMF you said was ceramic. Its not. It carbide the same that Gerber uses in its Multiplier and Centerdrive multitools ;)

For backcountry trips, I much prefer carrying a knife to baton firewood with vs carrying the weight of a hatchet or axe.

Urban survival knife. Interesting concept. I got the best knife I ever seen with one of those spam emails where you pay the overpriced shipping. I had a gut feeling it was gonna be worth the $12, and it sure was. I question how legal it is once I got it, cause it's practically a switch blade and it was sharp, very sharp. I sliced my hand open, 23 stitches just first time I was messing with it.

Love the knife but I hate all the straps and stuff Gerber puts on their sheaths. Personally I’d broom all the nylon stuff, throw a tek lok system or esee 6 style belt clip on it, add a ferro rod loop, and slap a gear pouch on it and call it a day. All the MOLLE is cool for a soldier but for a common person like me who packs it as a woods knife, just give me the sheath with the sharpener, a simple belt loop/clip, ferro rod loop, and a gear pouch that I can slap an altoids or slightly larger tin full of gear in and call it a day

You will never be able to hit through any aircraft window with this. You would need to freeze the window first. And next to this, it's a short stick tang, and the bud of the knife is separated from stick tang, so extra weak point.

The LMF 2 I think is actually made of 440A, the 420HC is used in the prodigy and strong arm.

Yeah all 3 use Gerbers proprietary 420HC with the exception of the limited upgraded run of the strongarm that used BDZ1 steel.

Helicopters and planes have polymer windows, so no duck can fly through the window. You can only breake it after spaying it with fire extinguisher. Before that you can hit it a 1000 times, but f...all will happen.

I would never use this knife in any type of long term survival. It's not full tang and I don't see any scenario where I would have to cut through live wires. This knife will fail and come loose since the tang is not a full tang.

3/4 tang knives are one of those things where the theory doesn’t really bear out in practice. I’ve used Mora knives for over 40 years and various prescribed in survival situation and I’ve never had a single one failing me. A bunch of your armchair campers will tell you how much better full tang is, but a well-built three-quarter tang knife will probably survive more than you will. In my experience the people that go on about full tangs have hardly used a knife to even a fraction of its capacity.

I have a Gerber Prodigy and I love it. I don`t think it is as tough as the LMF. However, I was thinking "urban" when I purchased it. Also, lighter and capable. The Strongarm was a close 2nd. I`d like your opinion of the Prodigy if you have any experience with one.
