From 1946 to 1949 I attended Dulwich College Preparatory School and the boxing coach was one Matt Wells. I remember him as a short grey-haired man with 2 cauliflower ears. His son was also a famous boxer - Bombadier" Billy Wells.

That's Bombardier Billy Wells in the film and he was born in 1889, so he can't have been your teacher's son. There was another well known fighter from the same era called Matt Wells not sure that he was related to Billy, though.

You might be confusing "Bombardier" Billy Wells with the Billy Wells who competed in the 684 Olympics for Great Britain.

I bet Gunner was a tough chap in the pubs as well. Got his shot at the world title but was KO'd by Tommy Burns.

Contemporary reports describe Bombardier Wells as a clever boxer. He doesn't show well here against the bull-like Moir.
