I like it how the Russian official seems very understanding. He knows people are riding bicycle, is even aware of fixies, and it seems he is somewhat supportive. When he said that they are professionals, that it's perfectly normal and fine for a pro to ride without brakes. As if he said to let people be themselves, enjoy what they wish. I think that's cool. :) Any Russians out there to comment on this? I really wanna hear your opinion.

I have ridden brakeless but found myself riding slower than I would with my front brake. I could skid/skip stop but riding 20mph+ through traffic and relying only on an inferior way of stopping is not smart. To each their own though. I just enjoy riding as fast as possible without having to worry about slamming into an unpredictable situation.

Only having a front brake is a bad idea imo. If I only had one it’d be on the back. One can argue efficiency all day long but I like my front teeth and in tact clavicles. Try hard stopping from full speed with only front brake and get back to me after the wounds heal.

Well, as a fixed gear rider in one of the most crowded cities in Europe which is İstanbul, i can say these bikes are extremely fun. And this takes the excitement to a higher level. So they should definitely be allowed whatever the situation is. For further info, the most bike-car crashes are caused by the careless drivers on the roads cuz they never tend to use their mirrors or check the right side when stepping out of the car :)

I've been riding fixed for a while now! I started out with a brake and slowly realized i don't need it. If u feel u have control, skidding and skipping is your break u don't need additional ones. This goes without saying but straps/toe-clips or click pedals are a must if you want to ride brake less. I vote brake less riding should be legal. (i'm from the Netherlands).

The police and the law makers should not be concerned with brakeless riders. It's of course advisable to have at least a front brake. If you don't have a break you put mainly yourself in danger. The police should totally focus on motorists who endanger people.

Single Speed bicycle was something many of us, if not most has grown with in Moscow. All what we had as breaks were not very sufficient coaster brakes. Skid is almost the same. As long as rider could do the skid with his bike gear ratio and easily. Especially in city with very clean roads as Berlin. My gear ratio on fixie/ss is 2.88. It is too high for my body mass, muscles to do easy skids. So I have front and rear brakes. Very handy for descending @40+ km/h. Where I'm riding now, roads have lots of small derbies, not so sufficient for braking by skids, either. But comes Russian style of winter and skid on winter tires might be better than with traditional brakes.

Stronger riders can break with leg power alone very quickly but never as quickly as a bike with 2 hand brakes. I am a weaker rider who needs it and can't rely on leg power. I understand, some reds are dumb to stop at as its completely clear but some are reckless where people have to stop to let cyclists go through. Riding brakeless can encourage endangering pedestrians unless the cyclist is being extremely safe and cautious. Physically weaker and/or inexperienced riders have no business riding brakeless fixes in traffic.

Thoroughly enjoyed the film! There is of course a certain amount of inherent danger that one immediately assumes as soon as they mount a bicycle. With that in mind, as long as the rider is in control it should be allowed use of a bike with or without the conventional brake systems depending on the rider's abilities. Ride your bike and be aware out there!

lots of people getting inspired of videos like these or by classics from Brunelle or Barentsen, but - as it was already said here, traffic in Berlin is way more relaxed and (almost) nobody break the rules. if you watch Hotline for example - drivers in NYC also are quite aware of bikes and overall traffic pace is much more stable. but traffic in Moscow or St. Petersburg is far more aggressive and unpredictable, plus to this its a common situation when one lane is used for parked cars and others trying to squeeze themselves in the remaining space. my opinion - if you’re fixing you know that you’re doing, just try no to hurt anybody else and always give the road for public transport, it’s about of respect to people) peace!

Keep the bikes with no brakes (besides locking up the rear wheel) on the track. But I also feel this should be decided on a more local level and not on a national one. Bikes on roads are good but you have to be able to react in a safe and timely manner in situations. Not having brakes will increase the potential for a worse accident to happen just like riding without a helmet will increase the potential for a head injury in an accident. The difference though is that the helmet protects ONLY the rider whereas brakes will help protect not only the rider but also the person/vehicle/building they may impact.

I think many fail to realise that these laws are not there to save the cyclists, they're there to save the people who are hurt by the cyclists who can't stop in time. By riding without brakes, they are risking others. This is not fair.

it's so funny coming from the exact opposite side where I have a ton of capacity on my bike, mostly on the back and use it for groceries and other things. The added weight makes my back brake more reliable, with the weight on the back tire you can stop faster without skidding out. Or maybe it's just me going slower. Looking online you can buy a fixed gear for less than half sometimes 25% the current cost of a "complete" bike. So it's worth looking into for sure.

I'm in this video and, well, I've installed a front brake on my ti-fixed just for it to be there. I was in the accident this september when the car took me over and hit the brakes two meters in front of me. I'm glad I didn't have the brake because otherwise I would have broken my neck. Police made me guilty of the accident because I had ALMOST no proof that I was meant to be hit BUT absence of brakes made me silent in the police quoters. Nobody wanted to listen to my version at all. My opinion is that almost no one even in bike world understands what this "no brakes" means. Those who out of their element always go nuts screaming that if you have no brakes you should not be allowed to ride in the street. But what they imagine is the bike that can't stop. I was hit by the female driver and the moment she left her car to assess the damage she went saying that I have no brakes. I guess she was the one who didn't approve fixies much and she knew where to look right away haha thankfully I didn't brake my breastbone against the roof of her nissan.

Took you over and hit the brakes two meters in front of you. That was reckless of her, and she did it without taking your safety into any sort of consideration. Where I live, she would have received a traffic summons (if she did not flee the scene of the accident) for 'failure to avoid a pedestrian' (and yes, here, a bicyclist is a pedestrian). Connecticut USA 41 North 73 West. I don't know if 'no brakes' would factor into it - brakes in that situation only mattered because the motorist was reckless and fully unpredictable in her behavior (because who would do that? If you were driving a standard sized steel automobile -- instead of your bicycle -- would she have taken the same approach? Of course not.) Glad you are alive to tell us your story!

yeah technically speaking the fixed gear bike's home is the velodrome. but there once was a time (and quite some time ago) that all bikes were fixed. I think it would be a shame to see them taken off the road. but I dare say that that's where it's all heading. over the last two months I've purchased 4 bikes and the last bike I got (last week) is a fixed gear with no brakes. took me a few days and a few falls to work out how to skidd. a quick tip to all those starting out - take time to familiarise and if you keep your iPhone plus in front pocket then have the screen facing inward. I didn't like the sensation at first because I was so into coasting but the fixed gear also has it's own approach to the slow or cruising mindset.. it's a great approach to urban riding and if you're aware, alert (if not the fixed gear bike will quickly change that) then you shouldn't have any problems..

1st lemme say:pretty good Job. 2nd I ride a fixed gear in Ldn. (I think it could fall in between those two cities mentioned above) and I feel safer riding it breakless than before. the instinct of squeezing the breaks in emergency situations cases a lot more drama. with a fixie I guess the body and mind recognise the absence of breaks and we seem to be more efficient at escaping the situation with a clear head rather than face it. and honestly even tho I'm not a experienced rider I stop as quickly as any other bike really. i like this Freudian slip 2:21 where he gets said when "messing up these beautiful track bikes and putting brakes on them" and then corrects to "Additional brakes on them" show that even in the mind of Fixie riders, Fixies do not have actual working brakes. It's just a fact. These Fixie riders tend not to stop on red lights or for obstacles because the can't. Their mind set it's better to avoid and go around instead of slowing down or stopping. Of course they try to compensate by looking ahead, but this does not get you very far when you couldn't see it coming. Example? a fixe rider trys to be cool and ride next to me in the draft of a car about 3 meters behind at ~45kph. the car had to suddenly brake for another car coming out of a parking lot. Result the Fixie (which had a front brake) crashed into the car. Why? Because if you have the mindset that you can always stop with just you legs and the "additional brake" is just to shut up the police, so it's just for show but you never use it, you will also not use it - the one and only actual brake you have - in an emergency like that. I contrast use disk brakes and had no issue with slowing down, but I guess crashing is part of the fun of being an idiot?

I think some people misunderstand the concept of "brakeless". They might think it as if the bike has singlespeed without brakes nor fixed cog. A pure brakeless when you have to stop by grinding your footwear to stop the bike. Riding fixed gear bike you still have a "brake" sort of method to stop by fighting back the pedals or locking the rear wheel. I think fixie riders must explain to people without better knowlage what kind of bikes we are riding. We have no additional brakes but we can brake and stop.

Ride with a front brake until you feel safe without it, it's not as dangerous as it looks at all, you can slow down perfectly fine once your experienced and know what your doing.

I drive fixed gear in Gemany and I really don‘t mind to have breaks on my bike. They look ugly on such a nice and clean bike, but I don‘t use them and they‘re a nice backup if my chain snaps.

Fixies are the best on the streets! If you love to be fast, and you can move right in traffic then you have to ride fixie. Fixies are about freedom, but we can't ride free 'cause the traffic and people who are around us, these are a little bit deangures. If your adrenalin is on the top you feel you have to ride faster and faster... Ride a bicycle and you will be happy! Daniel H.

If you can stop your wheel by stopping the pedals it's the same thing as a kids bike braking by pedalling backwards only harder on the legs

It takes some balls to ride mid-traffic brakeless, leave the guys alone... they must know what they are doing, otherwhise they would be dead already! I ride a hardtail mtb in the streets of São Paulo, our pavement sucks bad!

These bikes do have a way of braking, it's just not a lever. If you are speeding beyond the capabilities of your bike or your body of course it's dangerous but it's the same in every vehicle, brakes or not.

As a fanatic of speed and a brake less adventure, I say it should be allowed. If anything happens the cyclist has a big responsibility as well but we are all free to ride as we please. Stopping a fixie rider is like having them behind bars in a way

Sometimes its a "green street" for 10 kilometers in Moscow, so why not going fixie? All you need is 28" wheels, its no matter - fixie or integrated hub or whatever (commuter/touring.etc), Moscow can give u cyclin freedom on any kind of serious ride. Hope for more stylish and skilled road cyclists in this year. Cycling is still unpopular here...

+Frost - CS:GO Its easy, think of it as an extension of your body. pedal forward go forward, pedal back go back. its a game of Control, Strength and Endurance! if you ever had a Coaster Bike as a child you probably spent a lot of time going fast and sliding hard! basically think of a fixie as a way to be a big kid! you can be riding cycling paths or cities. a weekend tweeker or a 24/7 bike boy. "Because at the end of the day. its about Riding what Drives you! Not Brakes over Break, Fixed or Geared just what keeps your mind clear?" to quote myself. to answer your question you never really stop!

The least effective way is to manage your forward momentum, by slightly resisting the pedals as they go around (they constantly turn and will not come to a complete stop as long as the bike is in forward motion). A better way is to unweight the rear wheel (by leaning forward, out of the saddle entirely -- hips very close to the handlebar) and then using your stronger leg to completely stop the rotation of the cranks (generally by holding the pedal as far to the rear as it'll go during the crankset's rotation). It's called a skip stop (in some articles) and is something you can Google for. Since the rear wheel has only a fraction of your weight on it, in this instance, the rear tire will tend to skid on the pavement (otherwise, the wheel will tend to drive the crank through the transmission, and your braking leg won't be effective).

I am sorry, but as a keen cyclist, I fully support that brakeless must be forbidden. No cyclist immortal in the rain, snow or ice, against a careless vehicle driver. If you still want to brake, you can do it with both brakes, plus locking with your feet.I ride a fixie in town, due to the low cost maintenance, and I keep my expensive Italian CX bike with Campagnolo Record for other uses.I have two long drop brakes with 700x35mm Vittoria Voyager Hyper folding tyre, that is excellent, but at 70 EUR per pair delivered, it would be quite more expensive if I skid for braking.I admire the skills that brakeless cyclists have, and mock their stupidity for riding brakeless and risking ( not only ) their life. And yes, you could get fined - in Bulgaria, the good for nothing police frequently takes actions against cyclists with no brakes or no spoke reflectors.Jesus...

No fixed gear rider thinks they are immortal, but if you have the belief that brakes will save you against a careless vehicle driver about to run you over with his two tonne vehicle you are mistaken or deluded. The vast majority of risk of riding a bike in cities has nothing to do with the type of brakes a bike has or does not have so stop with the victim blaming. Next you will want to make rim brakes forbidden as they don't stop as well as rim brakes in the wet, your support is not based upon available evidence of risk

Dont legislate brakes. Just have a driving test where a bicycle will need to be stopped from lets say 20mph to 0 in a certain distance. Whatever the distance required would be, I'm sure brakeless fixies would fail it. They cannot stop well enough. It is impossible. There are plenty of otherwise shitty broken bikes and unskilled cyclists out there, who would fail the tests for their own reasons also. I'm just saying that there should be competence on the road as well as adequate equipment to handle traffic situations.
