I think parts of the reason Harry Styles became so successful are his being prepared to take risks at every stage of his career, push himself, think big, never be complacent and think he’d reached the pinnacle of his career in a boy band and following his creative desires rather than allowing himself to be used as a hit maker when he went solo, diversifying into business, acting, fashion. His work ethic, mental and physical stamina, self discipline, knowing his worth and not settling for less. Collaboration with the right people and taking advice whilst having his own unique vision. There’s a lot more to being a successful pop star for over a decade than being personable and having a good voice, no one could see from the audition of a 16yr old that he had the personality needed for staying power in the industry and going from strength to strength. He’s a lot more intelligent than many of his fans give him credit for - they think it’s luck or the right management that’s made him more successful than his ex bandmates when it’s actually who he is that’s got him here. As a teenager when he dated Taylor Swift he said he’s attracted to drive and ambition in others

Harry already had tremendous charisma, charm and stage presence at 16 - I think Simon knew he could work with that. The vocal training could come later but charisma can't be taught.

It’s a show & there’s a lot behind the scenes that happens. Some prior contestants have spoken out about how they were prepped behind the scenes on what songs to sing. I agree though, I’m no Simon but I wasn’t impressed with Harry or Niall’s auditions. I would be an awful judge of potential talent 😁

I like watching the talent shows and particularly on the voice, there are people with amazing voices that can sing so beautifully and you never see them again after the show. Even the winners don't really make it big often.

Unfortunately, with the way they work/pick what to watch/react to, someone would have to pay them money to do that, and as that's a pretty lengthy one, I would imagine it'd cost an arm and a leg. I agree that it's a good documentary for people who are interested in them to watch. They did say in previous videos, after having watched a couple of their stuff that they aren't so interested in 1D as a band, mostly the members as individual artists.

Simon seemed to like Harry and was pleasant to him. However, he was horrible to poor Niall, and basically forced him to agree with Simon regarding responses Niall had made. He was also nicer to Liam and Louis. You will see (if you watch all the auditions) that Harry and Louis only had 3 judges, but Liam and Niall had 4 - a bit unfair really. I usually quite like Simon, but the way he treated Niall was totally uncalled for. I Niall had only needed 2 votes (as did Harry and Louis), he would have gone straight through, as Simon and Louis voted in his favour. Sorry about the rant, but the judges panel should be equal for all contestants. Rant over!!

Louis auditioned in Manchester on March 27, 2010. Harry auditioned in Manchester March 27, 2010. Liam auditioned in Manchester June 14, 2010. Niall auditioned in Dublin in June 28, 2010. (Louis Walsh, the other male judge, is also from Ireland. He has managed Boyzone, Ronan Keating, Westlife, and other highly successful UK bands. Westlife is in their 24th year after taking a 6 year hiatus from 2012-2018. They are my second favorite boy band of all time.) There were supposed to be four judges for all of the auditions, but when Dannie Minogue went out on maternity leave in early 2010 they began using guest judges (Katy Perry was one). Some of the guest judges were good and some were not so good and Simon decided to ditch the guest judges and just finish the 2010 season with three. Nicole Scherzinger Was initially one of the guest judges, but when Cheryl Cole started having some problems and left the show for a bit, she became a regular judge for 2010. Whether it is three judges or four, they all have to get a yes from a majority to make it to the next round. If there are three judges you have to have two yeses, if there are four judges you have to have three yeses. Niall wasn’t disadvantaged because he had four judges. And to be fair, Niall did come across as very cocky when he spoke to the judges and he definitely wasn’t a slam dunk. Contrary to what Niall said, he was not as good as Justin Bieber. Ironically, Simon put him through anyway.
