My brother and sister came out of primary school with a high level of Welsh proficiency. The cognitive benefits associated with having a second language are profound. Money wasn't wasted on them.

"Exactly the same" is a great exaggeration. Of course a knowledge of Welsh would help to a degree with learning Breton, but there are lots of differences, you couldn't understand it right off, beyond maybe the odd word here and there.

You know what else would be useful in Brittany...French. Also in France, Canada, all through Africa, working in the U.N. or the Red Cross, or the E.U. What I'm trying to say is, if the value of Welsh is just that it is good to speak 2 languages and to visit Brittany (and Breton really isn't mutually intelligible with Welsh) ...well there are more useful languages than Welsh. There are good reasons to learn Welsh...but these are not them.

I can't bear to watch this 'debate'. Neither party seems to have a clue how to form an argument on this subject. What training or experience are these talking heads supposed to have? Was there nobody more competent available?

Wales speaks Welsh yes it may be a part of the British union but english is not the language of its native people, I'm originally srilankan and under the British rule they wiped out our native language this should not happen to Wales. And it's always better to speak more than one language in any given case.

@@cylt5113 Also in part agree with you - This is how England can fck Wales over without ever having to Fire a single bullet or pass a new law...just make poverty so bad, it makes native Welsh population move to England to look for work and their descendents become "English".
