American hunter here: keep your hunting traditions and formalities alive and well as long as possible. Over here the pendulum has swung so far towards “comfort” above all else, that we’ve lost some of the time honored traditions that make up a quality, respectful sporting and sportsman’s life. Once the hunting traditions are gone, people won’t strive to bring them back. There’s Something about hunting alongside people in camo hoodies (jumpers) and jeans, that reduces the feeling of doing something special. Americans love their sporting past, but few seem to remember it through resurrecting traditions and formalities associated with the hunt. There is also something meaningful about formality and tradition that seems to keep people respectful; respectful of the quarry, of the sport, of the land, and of their fellow hunters.

Agreed . As a US hunter I say you are 100% correct. I enjoy wearing more traditional clothing, Woolrich wool plaid coat, heavy canvas khaki pants and wool shirt topped of with my Fedora. Seems appropriate with my English side by side shotgun and Wirehaired Pointing Griffon bird dog.

Do I hear an AMEN? This Texas boy will probably never get to shoot driven birds in the U.K. or anywhere else for that matter but the tradition has an "existence value" to me. Keep those classic traditions alive as long as possible! Here is America it's all about "make it quick and easy". Jump in your shooting cart -shoot 100 clays - go home and on to the next activity. Walk and carry your gun - surely you jest! Walk a field behind a good pointer for quail? Nah, seed the roads and drive $30,000 quail rigged vehicles until you find a covey. Oh well.

I would argue respect for the game you're pursuing and appreciation for the friends you share those experiences with is an equal part of hunting on both sides of the pond, just displayed in different ways. I am a American hunter and I enjoy watching your way of hunting. Hunting here seems to change at a much faster pace than there and usually not for the better. Don’t know if you have ever hunted in the states but I would love to see you go dove hunting or turkey hunting here you would have a great time. I have watched y’all swap from side by sides to over/unders and worry that semi-autos will be next.

Life long bird hunter from the states and I love your traditions; the dress, 11’s, the sportsmanship. Our kin aren’t much for ties and we hunt behind bird dogs and really don’t have any driven hunts in the south. (I have been on pheasant hunts in our northwest that use drivers and blockers) We do shoot doves which is as close as we get to anything resembling a driven bird. We do have our own traditions and etiquette which I think is important to all hunting traditions. Keep up the good work!

I was struck by your thoughts on gratitude and the (sadly, possible) comment that some American may make that quip about public land and not having to "say thank you" to anyone. As much as I believe in the necessity of public land, I do believe my country is missing something in the sense of feeling entitled to land access. I've not seen this expressed in this comment section (we're not monolithic, after all), but there is an element of gratitude that I think is missing over here. Love your video. I'm a beater not a shooter...(Except on a 'Beaters Shoot' at the end of the the season).....However I still 'Dress Accordingly' .....Tweed and a Tie, why wouldn't you? I might not be a 'Gun' but I'm still part of the day and it makes me feel good, plus I know I get respect from the Keeper and others for making the effort.

Sadly if it was on public land in the UK I highly doubt it would be allowed or you'd be dealing with people that don't want you there. 🤔 As a follow up, my understanding of what is currently permitted on public land in the UK might be lacking. I was thinking more in terms of the public land in the States.

Bismuth 4s would work great. I’ve found steel 2 shot to be best for pheasant. Steel just doesn’t have the density for smaller shot. Gotta go 2-3 sizes larger than you would use with lead.

I agree that you should dress for a formal day. Low birds? Do they learn over the season that if they fly low and slow they don't get shot at? If so perhaps a day or two of only shooting the clever sods is required.

As an American, and as such having an outside looking in perspective, I think the dressing appropriately comes from tradition and that tradition comes from game shooting formerly being an upper class sport. And from what I can tell, upper class Victorian and Edwardian Brits wore suits and ties for everything. My two cents, your mileage may vary.

Johnny I'm thinking your the first to be in the field and talk about the respect and safety of other's. This is why I watch your tutorials they just keep getting better and better. And about the steel shot your using I have no experience with steel on upland game bird's here in the States we use lead, only steel for water foul. But Johnny what choke would you use for your game bird's in the UK ? The US might be heading that direction soon with the steel shot.

I’ve been on two pheasant hunts this year. The first was 9 degrees Fahrenheit. -12.7C. The other a balmy 20F. -6.6C. I don’t think ties and vests would have lasted the several hours of shooting. Lol. While I think the English hunting uniform is tight, and I’ll love to have one. I also want to be warm and not freeze what’s left of my sack off. Oh, and a pox on your house. After your LongThorne videos I discovered they have a dealer about 30 minutes from my house in the states. Looks like I might be done buying 687s after all.

I think that there is a certain evolution in what we wear; shooting clothing is fit for purpose; we wouldn't wear it unless it was. However look along the line and how many are wearing a jacket? A coat perhaps, or a waistcoat or gilet. Last year I had a Norfolk Jacket and some plus threes made. (Costing less than a 250 bird day, for perspective, and I plan to be buried in them)The difference between a jacket that is made to fit and for a purpose and an off the peg jacket is considerable. I think ties are good not just for appearance/respect/tradition, but they serve a purpose too, relatively unbulky scarves that help keep you warm, but can be adjusted for ventilation, and they don't interfere with gunmount. (Also make a reasonable impromptu dog lead/ trouser belt/sling etc..).

The difference between a Canadian and a canoe . . . . canoes tip. When I have adequate time for the shot I always over- think it: What's the exact range? where is the wind going to throw the pellets? Am I leading too much? . . . . and I miss the shot. When there's a tiny window of opportunity to shoot I just go by instinct and often make the shot.

You can load em all day yourself. I even load up black powder shells in full brass hulls just for my old Damascus gun. Federal and CHEDDITE both make paper hulls if you want to go full no plastic. And Ballistic Products sells fiber wads and overshot cards. My favorite loads are the ones I work up for older 2.5” guns with fiber wads and roll crimps.

Again Johnny your video's are wonderful. This question might be a bit off point. I notice a lot of the Labrador's are of the dark yellow or fox red. I have a wonderful Fox Red who makes me a better hunter indeed. A lady here (California) brought 40 year old frozen seaman from UK to this area. I am just asking for most of your videos they are red. I believe here people try to make them almost white and it seems to ruin the breed. Any thoughts? Thanks again for a great show. Recoil is slightly different between them, if you use different chokes then that is a factor as is speed of reload on single shots.

It's always best to get a clean kill, but when you don't, that's where a good picking up line comes in so they can send the dogs after the wounded birds first.

I am an avid fisherman, have participated in hunting in the past and shot competitively for years. First of all, amazing channel. Secondly, could you give me some advice? I want to dip my toe in phesant shooting, yet have no interest in bagging 100+ birds. I shoot what I eat and eat what I shoot - thus in an ideal world would pay a landowner a small fee, shoot one or two birds, and go home to cook them up. From a phesant perspective, the only opportunities seem to be incredibly expensive (not a slight - if people enjoy and are willing to pay more power to them!) 100+ bird shoots. Is there anything available out there for someone who just wants to bag a couple of birds for dinner here in the UK that won't break the bank?

Have a look for rough shooting on shooting websites alot of estates will offer the odd rough day which is walking around with a couple of others and a couple of good dogs for a small bag none of the formal stuff

I think etiquette is important and the tie just as much... I don't hunt here in Switzerland, mostly because it doesn't interest me... I'd much rather birds or rabbits... but if did come down to it I would not be caught in one of those God awful orange camo hunting outfits... 😢 I'm very much looking forward to organizing a trip to GB for my first hunt British style 😀

My two cents as an American. We dress well, much like we use good manners depending on the circumstance. But the point is we dress and use manners to show the people involved that we have respect. Just a hint put a tie on for your wedding lol. It’s not a bad look to have good manners ever.

American here: You may not "need" a tie to honor the bird, however, your kit (tie and all) may be necessary to honor the sport. Even the least pretentious persons who play golf still wear a collared shirt and dress nicer than they normally would if they were just taking a walk.

Shooting low birds is just not done! Because if you Center punch a bird at 15 yards is blown to pieces and not worth eating! Nobody likes to see a bird pillowed! To eat the game you harvest is part of the sport. If a bird is beyond your capabilities don’t wound it!

Here's my thought on Etiquette and attire. You dress up for church, not for your wife, and not for your fellow parishioners. You dress your best to put yourself in the right frame of mind. It's a sign of respect to God. How you dress has an effect on how you conduct yourself. And good conduct makes enjoyable experiences. Stay British, and don't take fashion advice from Walmart shoppers.

You asked about respecting the birds, by dressing up or whether it was out of respect for your comrades; I think it’s neither, for you can show respect, to your game regardless of the attire! Being American, our traditions are becoming extinct, due to woke liberal ideology! That being said I love the traditions of your Country , especially in regards to hunting, I’m old school and believe in traditions, passed down from generation to generation, I think it helps us to remain grounded and connected to our ancestry! Keep those traditions alive, because once they disappear, it’s hard to regain them!
