Man, watching this video had me tears. I like to think of me being tough, but I had tears rolling down from start to end. It also makes me angry as hell knowing how people treated this man and for him not t receive his trophy initial years after his death. I don’t care if people say “We’ve come along way since then”, it doesn’t matter. NASCAR people are supposed to be so-called “Patriots”, shouting “AMERICA!!!”, here you have a military veteran from WWII being treated like that. Racism isn’t a mistake, it’s just an excuse.

FANTASTIC! Watched Wendell race at Darlington many times. Met him in the pits after one Southern 500. That was when the fans could go down in the pits after a race. Wendell was very gracious and made an impression. My cousins and I always cheered him on after that.

I was privileged to watch him race at Bristol in the 60s. At that time I was a teenager and didn’t know a lot about Wendell but I wanted him to win so bad. I was seated where I could see the pits and while all the other pit crews were using air wrenches Wendell’s crew were using your typical lug wrenches. At that moment I started rooting for Wendell and truthfully I can’t remember how he finished that day but I continued to cheer for him as long as he raced. It is safe to say “there will never be another driver like Mr. Scott.

Well nascar has racist origins Very racist origins. And it originated in the south And you know what its like in the south especially in the 1950s Also in the 1950s it would be looked down upon if a black man kissed a white woman in 1950s because thats what happens when you won back then well that was one of the reasons but it was mostly because he was black. And i personally believe they downpayed him alot. He got 147 top tens and only got 20k altogether. I think its a shame it took till 2015 for them to put him in the nascar hall of fame, also this rlly pisses me off but nobody would sponsor him so his kids, and himself would have to be his pit crew. I think if he had got a sponsor. Good pit chief. He would of won alot more races and when i mean alot i mean he could of rivaled richard petty and david pearson in wins. Maybe like 130 wins. Such a shame. Nascar pisses me off i think there should be alot more black drivers. Noe that bubba is gone there is 0 in nascar.... im pissed Didnt EVEN GIVE HIM THE TROPHY WHEN HE WAS ALIVE. *THEY WAITED 57 GOD DAMN YEARS TO GIVE HIM THE GOD DAMN TROPHY????????!??? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK???? AND DONT SAY "oh they didnt know about him" FUCK OFF YES THEY DID BECAUSE THEY PUT HIM IN THE HALL OF FAME!!!! THEY HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN ABOUT WENDELL SCOTT BUT NEVER GAVE HIM THE FUCKING TROPHY. IT AINT THAT HARD TO GIVE OUT A FUCKING TROPHY AND WHEN YOU DID NASCAR YOU GAVE IT TO HIM LONG AFTER HE HAS PASSED*

Wendell Scott. Name alone is overwhelming. 'Cause I was born in '63. No cell phones when I was growing up. My oldest Brother Grady is so into performance, I tagged along. Seeing guys working on their own cars/racing. That'what I saw. Loved all that saw(except wrecks). Racing resides in my blood. Hooked from age 5. So glad. I just couldn't imagine life without. It was normal 4 me at a stoplight with my brother hearing a car with a "HARD HITTIN' CAM" pull beside. "SUCH A SYMPHONY" of "Dynamic Music."

I remember Prior getting handed a card with a black smudge simulating him, and I remember how he kept a change jar and that was his savings. Wendall was more than just a great man, he was what this Country is supposed to represent, white or black and NOT what IMO opinion idiots like Al Sharpton that throw hate into the minds of ppl that never had close to living in the adversity of what Wendall went through! I'm a white middle class 49 yr old conservative that saw Greased Lightening at the movies, 1977? I also believe that most of this PC crap is just completely stupid. That said, I am 100% behind any one of any color that wants to make a name for his or herself, and to see stuff from the US's "not so distant past", like Wendell not getting the checkered flag or initial win in 1963 because they did not want to showcase a black man winning a race just makes me want to puke. Like the famous driver Darrell Waltrip say's in this documentary, that would just crush even the toughest of individuals. Hat's off to you Wendell, you are an inspiration to us all! I went through a lot of adversity in my life and am proud of how I handled most of it, and I consider myself a pretty tough character, but I don't have anywhere near enough to go through what Wendell did. This is not baseball or football, this is southern white bread stock car racing of the 50s and 60s. Now that's balls!

OMG!!! Can't explain how this makes me feel...today is March 9, 2019 @ 4:00 p.m....my sister told me that Wendell Scott was related to my mothet~1st cousin--which makes him my 2nd cousin...my sister told me about a street in Danville, Va (where my mother was also born and raised~Tanner family)...a street was named after Wendell...the re-enactment of this story has made me cry, laugh...more so~Thank God for the struggles that the strong black man endured...Love y'all--From Florida 💖Hope to meet y'all one day soon💞

I became a Wendell Scott fan when I saw the Richard Pryor movie (Greased Lightning) at the age of 9. The history of Wendell Scott was one of my inspirations that made do research into Black history as well as being one of the influences in my life that motivated me to be unbreakable.

My thought as well. He often (maybe always?) bought his cars used from other drivers so he would have been a model year behind. My best guess from historic photos is that he would have been running a '62 Bel Air bubbletop around that time.

I will say this...Stock car driving has came a long way but it has went in the wrong direction. It's not Stock car anymore...the only thing that changed the game over the years was money. The only thing that ties NASCAR to the modern sport is the name. NASCAR always has been a sport that one must be raised and conditioned in by money which is why there weren't that many minorities in this sport before. The older drivers were all given their opportunities by their financial backing. If anything Scott should've been taking donations from the people in his community. Back then would've been a good time to do such a thing being that this was during the time of the Civil Rights Struggle.

He lived 5 hoses down the street from my wife's uncle in Danville Va. We would be sitting in the living room watching TV an all of a sudden the whole house would start shaking, My wife's uncle would say sounds like Wendell is getting his car ready for the race this weekend. And nobody on the whole damn block was bothered by the noise, just another day. This was 1973 I am not 100 % pos of the year.

RIP WENDELL,YOU SHOWED PEOPLE THAT YOU WAS NOT JUST A MAN,AND NOT JUST A BLACK MAN,...YOU SHOWED EVERYONE YOU WAS A REAL MAN, NO MATTER WHAT COLOR YOU WHERE. HIS FAMILY WAS HIS TROPHY TO HIM, BUT HE WAS DENIED A WINNER....BY THE OTHER RACERS......WHO COULD DENY A REAL WINNER?.....NOT ME

@ 31:07, if Bud Baker was a man of class as soon as he realized the error he woulda took the trophy and walked-over and given it to Wendell ~ and made a big-stink about what a lousy deal was going down, and WHY. Instead, Baker KEPT the trophy???? A man captive to the prejudices of the south, and the messed-up times. Jeez, underdog guys like Scott sure have my respect and regard for their dogged determination and style. To change the topic, What if some of the indie cats back then were onto nitrous-boost and stagger to give them an edge they coulda cleverly, subtly used to keep them in the top 10 finishes? Not overdone so their 'secret' would have leaked, at least not for some time. Or other 'tricks' anticipating out-of-the-box rule-finesse thinking, like clutch-pack/bell-housing over-pressure to vent-feed the carbs? Innovation was the life-blood of small-track and stock-car racing back then that made racing so exciting, keeping it competitive, novel, human-interest and technically relevant. ~ ; )

Lemme tell you right now. I've always loved racing, and Nascar. Especially after watching "Greased Lightning" as a kid, but it's something I just kept inside cause I could never see myself even going to a Nascar event, forget about participating in one! @West...Unfortunately, you were too young to realize Pryor was the wrong celebrity to play the role of a great human being. You see, Scott never in his career was so opportunistic as Pryor was to make an epithet "humorous." The people on the African continent brought this contradiction to his attention.
