Wow thanks man, I'm a descendent of Wendish immigrants who set up shop in South Australia in the mid 19th century. Unfortunately their culture was subsumed by the German immigrants who travelled with them, and they didn't make much effort to preserve their culture like the dudes in Texas did. Really fascinating to hear about my ancient family.

The same happened to many here in Texas.... I was always so confused by the seemingly out-of-place "German" noodles my grandmother would put on the table on holidays... come to find out, it wasn't a German tradition at all.... it has been incredible to learn the truth. I'm so proud of this heritage.

Ashes of the dead were placed in burial urns and these often had a drilled hole in them to allow duša to leave that urn once the final act of ritual burial was over (probably). There was (and still is) an event called tryzna which was a feast over the grave site or near it. The point of it was to celebrate the one who was buried and talk about him/her (most likely to appease the spirit so it can leave the body/urn in peace happy to know it was loved/respected).

Fascinating stuff mate. Never knew that much about Wendish folk lore and their beliefs and history. I definitely need to add a few books on the reading list regarding that. On the topic of the dead returning to haunt the living and cause trouble and even kill, well obviously the Barrow-wights immediately come to mind from The Lord of The Rings. I think Tolkien had a very clear perseption of what he was writing about and portraying in the Fellowship (as well as his other writings). Taking already existing elemnts of Norse culutre and mythology and applying it to his fantasy world and expanding it ever more. That is the essence of magic on so many levels! Thanks for the well researched and presented video.

After rewatching this video, I came to think about time. It seems the ancestors thought of time as circular, but I the modern world, we think of time as lateral. When did this happen, where did it start and why? My guess was that it was the invention of the clock that had a lot to do with it. Funny enough, old clocks are circular, and our measurements are of a circular value. The motion of the heavens is, of course, circular. Any thoughts, oh great sage?

5 am here in Ontario. Good watch before I'm off to work. 13th warrior is my favorite movie. THEY THINK THEY ARE BEARS! Here in Canada the Wendigo is an invisible forest spirit that takes control of the minds of men in isolation driving them to become cannibalistic and often eat their families. Usually most active in the winter months. Some Wendigo hunters have been known to have killed up to 40 of these beasts. But hunters were jailed when Europeans discovered the wendigo was just disturbed cannibalistic human men and the Wendigo hunters were essentially murderers. Very small piece of our Native mythology.

I know it's an old video, but I must say. That's almost literally Serbian folklore. Hearth, duša, džed, worshiping of ancestors, mora, vampire (of course), funeral rites, fear of the dead returning from their graves, even divlje žene, who are literally Vile from Serbian folklore, connection with nature (trees especially), even Serbian Slava is only ancestor worshiping that church took because it was too important for the people to be simply deleted or banned etc etc ETC. Funny thing is, all that I'm mentioning is still practicing today and/or believing in today. Of course, mostly in rural places, but there's no place in Serbia that has no some belief in Vile, in sacred hearth, in duša that can leave the body during sleep, werewolves (yes, those born with teeth were considering werewolves), significance of ancestors, ritual meal over the graves and during funerals (dača), spirits having battles in the sky during sleep... I can continue till I repeat almost everything you've said.

To wander about winding ones's way through the woods ... actually, to wend one's way through the woods was the older usage ... Vanir, Vandal, Wendell, Wend perhaps even Vanara seem to have been the woods nomads when the earliest Indo-European steppe culture showed up. From what I gather, Texas Wends are indeed Sorbes, but not all Wends were ethnically Slavic. The original term seems to have referred to one's lifestyle, not necessarily one's ethnicity.
@alysmarcus77475 жыл бұрын
from what a group told me up here (i'm in ontario) some of my family would have been Wends; and what i was told was that the Sorbs were from a slightly different area and settled in 2 or 3 places in the US. Is the Mora related to the Moirai, the three Fates from Greek religion?
@Loddfafnisodr5 жыл бұрын
They are both related to PS _merti-_ ("to die") and some other PS words. The Goddess Marzanna can be considered a Moira, similar to the Greek Atropos or Roman Morta. The Slavic Zorze are like Morai in many ways, and I suspect their original name was some kind of combination of Jaskry-Oste-Siostry-Stare (Bright/Vivid-Last-Sisters-Old Ones) or maybe just had different names like that and it doesn't really make sense to create nonsensical PIE reconstructions such as Hausos.

The part regarding astral projection and doing battle in another dimension was excellent even though you didn't describe it as such, as for their knowledge regarding the spirits and other questionable entities that are everywhere just like modern day radio or Wi-Fi validates was also intriguing, the only disappointment during this presentation was reference to the movie that stars Antonio Banderas, that movie was anti-Pagan and pro abrahamic religion, and whom knows how much they paid him a Spaniard to play a muslim unless he's a confirmed maurisco, murano, or greedy shill, I find that fictional film a crime against history considering middle eastern invaders occupying for a bit and almost conquering Spain have since had bad blood on a literal genetic memory level, but whatever in that distant age after Rome fell the defenses where down and all European kingdoms had an every man for themselves mentality and lets not forget the Vikings taking advantage of the chaos to pirate raid their neighbors and trade Caucasian slaves and goods as far into the Mediterranean to barter with middle easterner semitics of either creed...you out to recommend Valhalla Rising now that was an epic fantasy tragedy, fictional as well, but more plausible.

The Lusatian Serbs were first mentioned in Franconian Chronicle of Fredegar as "Surbi". Later name was "Sorabi". In German language the Lusatian Serbs were longtime called "Wends" or "Sorbs" or "Lusatian Serbs". After the Second World War the Lusatian Serbs of Budyšin refused to be called "Wends" in German because of it's misuse during the Nazi period (the Lusatian Serbs of Chóźebuz, who speak another Variant of Lusatian Serbian language, have less problems wit the term Wends), so they insist on the use of "Sorbs" in German corresponding to the oldest mentioning "Surbi". "Lusatian Serbs" is most fitting name for them, but some stupid German neonazis would want to send them back to Serbia....
