I'm surprised you didn't include Choice as a reason why people live in cities. Cites offer a variety of things to choose from: what kind of job to have, where to live, what to do for recreation -- and this gives people the feeling that they are choosing their life circumstances. There is perhaps nothing as defeating to the human spirit as having no choice. That's the reason cities are expensive: for each thing you choose to do, all the things you didn't choose to do need to be paid for too. But we're willing to pay a premium in order to have a range of options available to us. Mind you...having things to choose among means that you are one of the things other people may choose or not choose, hence cites can be lonely places.

@@cabron247 this is overly simplistic. Specialized workers (outside of agriculture and forestry) live in cities because that is where their jobs generally are. I hate to be that moaner on the internet, but I don't like that you said the population of Paris was 2.2 million. Paris (officially) is the tiny, extremely densely populated core of a massive urban conurbation home to almost 11 million people. Admittedly, this is slightly higher than the population of London's urban area (closer to 10 million) so it wouldn't exactly prove your point; however, London's metro area is still roughly 2 million inhabitants higher than Paris's, which also gives a much better visualisation of their actual size. I also have to point out (sorry) that Moscow (by official size, it's technically part of Europe as is east of the Ural mountains) is home to around 3 million more people than London (also by official size). When we compare their urban areas Moscow has almost 6 million more people than London, and by metro area Moscow is still roughly 6 million larger. Edit: oh yeah, the other city populations annoy me too; official city boundaries are just too arbitrary to use whilst trying to prove a point. Once again I'm sorry and thanks for reading the whole comment.

Yeah I'm pretty sure if you include surrounding metropolitan areas LA is bigger than New York City too. There's WAY more people packed into the entire LA conurbation and all of its sprawl than in tiny little NYC.

It's what we evolved to do! The biggest example is our eyes, "Perhaps the hallmark of our egalitarian nature is the design of our eyes. We are the only one of well over 200 primate species to have evolved eyes with an elongated shape and a bright white sclera background to a dark iris. Known as ‘cooperative eyes’, they invite anyone we interact with to see easily what we are looking at. By contrast, great apes have round, dark eyes, making it very difficult to judge their eye direction. Like mafia dons wearing sunglasses, they watch other animal’s moves intently, but disguise their thoughts from others. This suits a primate world of Machiavellian competition. Our eyes are adapted for mutual mindreading, also called intersubjectivity; our closest relatives block this off. To look into each other’s eyes, asking ‘can you see what I see?’ and ‘are you thinking what I am thinking?’ is completely natural to us, from an early age. Staring into the eyes of other primate species is taken as a threat. This tells us immediately that we evolved along a different path from our closest primate relatives."

Neither Moscow nor St. Petersburg are part of Europe, though they are part of what is known as "European Russia". Istanbul is also not part of Europe, before someone mentions that. Lastly, he is not incorrect. Paris population information on Google only lists that of its specific in-city population, which is about the size of Inner London, while the Paris Metropolitan Area's population, or the true city population because pretending that the city really ends with its tiny borders is insane, is well over 12 million. London's is 13.6 million.

It’s likely an average across the entire city. My 750-square-foot 1-bedroom apartment in the Financial District is $4,200 a month, but if you moved it to Canarsie in Eastern Brooklyn, it would probably be around $1,200 a month at market rate. You’re probably thinking in terms of just Manhattan, possibly just Manhattan south of 59th Street, which is what most people from elsewhere think of when they hear “New York City.” Hell, when he said “Downtown New York” in the video, a generic image of Manhattan looking south from Midtown was shown.
