A historical sidenote regarding the Finnair route (at 4:00): the reason Finnair flew the long way round in 1983 was not because of the Soviets, but the Japanese. Nearly all countries charge overflight fees, they're just usually not as selective as Russia. And two more things: first, they often block planes from unfriendly countries - no Israeli planes can overfly most Arab countries and vice versa, for example, Qatari planes are banned from several other Arab countries, and no planes from Taiwan can overfly mainland China (there is an exception for direct flights to mainland Chinese airports, which are limited). And there are many other examples. Second, the U.S. controls air traffic in vast areas of oceanic airspace, even in international waters and some other countries' airspace (e.g., Micronesia, which controls a huge area of the Pacific Ocean) - and it charges for overflights not only of its own territory, but for overflying air traffic CONTROLLED areas. So, a flight from Japan to New Zealand, or from the UK to the Bahamas, must pay U.S. overflight fees, even though it doesn't overfly American territory or territorial waters. This is even worse than the Russian fees in many cases.
@maczetamaczeta1896 жыл бұрын
Yeah, well - no European (or US) country is denying flight rights to anybody, so your example of Arab countries using same political agendas is actually bad for either of them.

Railways and pipelines cross the country on the ground, dividing it into pieces. This requires control and maintenance costs, while air space is basically free and belongs to everybody. So spare me your preaching and get the difference yourself.
@maczetamaczeta1896 жыл бұрын
"And how do they divide the land " - by occupying space... You're some kind of stupid, aren't you? Air space is in control only to a certain degree, by some ridiculous, abstract law. Unless you want ISS to pay Russia too. Most of the waters are international and belongs to no one. Learn some basic facts before talking to adults. Russia is always welcome to trade within the European laws. The thing is, these laws are too strict for their taste - too little people to bribe and blackmail - therefore using the oldest weapon in their arsenal: obstacle and obstructions. I couldn't care less if this Gas station-country is greed enough, to calculate fees or not - we can afford it. It just look silly and showcase, Russia is not worthy of any partnership.
@maczetamaczeta1896 жыл бұрын
I'm so fed up of Russia's besieged fortress syndrome. Everytime Russia want to do something nasty, uses same old, worn out excuses. Invasion of Poland among Nazis in 1939? "We have to protect our people". Georgia, Ukraine... "we have to protect our people". One of the few countries in the world regulating air space with political agenda? That's naturally in reaction to world "being bully" to Russia. No one is falling for this anymore. "And who worths it? The British? The Americans? The.... Germans? LOL!" Apparently, to those interested: yes. It got you think. "Why doesn't EU let Russia..." Because of long history of Russia breaking trade agreements and using it to empowered itself in given regions, rather that trading. "We don't like Ukraine anymore, let's stop pumping them gas". "Baltic states are annoying, let's pretend their meat doesn't meet are sophisticated rules" etc. etc.
@maczetamaczeta1896 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard so much nonsense in years. You actually turned out to be psycho, covered behind deep complexes of homo sovieticus. The entire GDP of Russia is lower, than that of New York City. So much about the significance of your "farts". That's the sole reason, the only thing Russia can do to, be noticed is to bully other countries and threat with nuclear arms. We just don't give a shiet anymore. Live in your barren wasteland and dream of once glorious empire of the east and don't bother to prolongue this conversation as I'm not going to bother anymore. Disgusting...

This video also unintentionally explains why Russia is such an important part of China's Belt and Road Initiative. Road and rail infrastructure across Siberia and European Russia is crucial to promoting land trade between Europe and East Asia.
@jyashin5 жыл бұрын
Bit of a late reply. While Russia is an important partner for China's BRI, most of the railways and other connectivity infrastructure don't take place in Russia itself, but in the former Soviet Republics. China doesn't trust Russia, as Russian authorities are notorious for attacking and closing Chinese businesses. That's why the routes mostly go through Kazakhstan. China even built railways in Turkey and Syria just to avoid Russia as much as possible. However, Russia's influence over the former Soviet republics is immense, and Putin's approval is required to actually get those countries on board. Thus, while most of the projects don't take place in Russia, the Kremlin is unfortunately a poison China has to risk.

@@Dragones15 Russia had closed Chinese businesses in Moscow before. That said, I'm very skeptical of the whole "China doesn't care about its citizens" narrative our gongzhi (it's a negative term) propagate. When in Russia, follow Russian laws, after all. I used to work at ANC. For international passenger flights, it's virtually dead in the North (international) terminal. Cargo flights are another story. ANC was the 3rd busiest cargo hub in the world when I worked there, not sure about today, but I know it's still super busy.

well this was a very intresting video, but i have to correct you on one thing, there's a pretty new airline, Air Belgium. They officially classes as a low cost carrier and it flies from brussels south to Hong Kong. They recently got their permission to fly over russia, and im pretty sure that there are now 2 airlines in belgium that fly over Russia, Air Belgium and Brussels airlines. Great video :D

With the Russian-Ukrainian war now and the British being banned from flying over Russia, Anchorage is gradually going to become more busy with passengers again if the ongoing conflict continues to worsen relations between Europe and Russia.
@maxxiong2 жыл бұрын
That was due to the lack of range though. Most planes these days don't need that stopover even if avoiding Russia. Also ICN is sort of playing the role of ANC right now due to Chinese COVID restrictions. Without COVID restrictions EWR-HKG by united and DFW-HKG by american will probably need a legitimate stopover due to range
@theanonymousaviationlover26772 жыл бұрын
@@maxxiong That is true and I can see some airlines doing that but in Wendovers' video about 20 hour flights and cargo airlines it is cheaper to stopover in Anchorage in the long run.
@Edax_Royeaux2 жыл бұрын
@@maxxiong A lot of cargo planes are older and smaller, so they don't have the same range as the newer premiere passenger jetliners. Anchorage will serve as a nexus for cargo flights until Russian airspace is open again.
@maxxiong2 жыл бұрын
@@mdstate829 For cargo it depends on how much payload is being carried actually. I found 5Y785 on FR24, which sometimes flies MIA-ICN-HKG, and the first leg takes nearly 17 hours partially due to having to route around Russia. This has to be at a pretty low load, because boeing's stated range at max load is somewhere around 10-11 hours.

@carultch6 жыл бұрын
Actually, flat Earthers believe in a map of Earth that corroborates everyone else's understanding of the north pole, and allows for polar flights in the Arctic. It is the map of the Antarctic that flat Earthers deny. And they bring up the fact that there are very few flights over Antarctica. But the truth is that the three population centers of the Southern Hemisphere (Chile/Argentina, Sydney Australia, and South Africa) all form a triangle around Antarctica, such that there is no need to fly over Antarctica on such flights. The great circles pass through the oceans alone. There is a Qantas flight between Sydney and Santiago, that would be impossible if the flat Earth conspiracy theorists were correct.

Most Western airlines did fly Trans-Siberian from Europe to Asia, although it was nowhere near the most popular route, as it requires a stopover at Moscow, and airlines could only use 707s and DC-8s. KLM at one time did a joint venture with Aeroflot to fly the Europe-Japan route, using leased Soviet IL-62 airliners, and Japan Airlines had a similar arrangement. For international students during the Cold War the cheapest way to fly Europe-Japan is usually Aeroflot.

Yes, and the real reason they didn't fly over the USSR to Tokyo starting from 1983 was because the _Japanese_ insisted they take the long way around; the at-the-time still state-owned Japan Airlines demanded it, because they wanted to be among the first airlines to fly directly over the USSR between Europe and Asia, and they didn't see Helsinki or Finland as an important enough destination to warrant such a flight. They got their wish a few years later when direct service between Tokyo and Paris opened operated by both JAL and Air France.
