As you'll notice, Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 and Jeju Air Flight 2216 are missing from this video. This is because we wrapped up work on this video prior to the holidays to give our post-production staff well-earned time off, and therefore we were unable to modify the video to include these incidents without disturbing their holidays. No doubt each of these two flights would be notable enough to include on this list had it been possible.

Just a note on the australian aviation duopoly, we seem to have a pattern with that. 1. Our grocery stores are pretty much a duopoly between Woolworths and Coles. Aldi as managed to slowly climb up to i think about 9% (feel free to fact check that) of the market share, and the Independent Grocers Association (IGA) is pretty tiny. This means that for most australians, food and other necessities are stupidly expensive because of Coleworths being pretty much the only option. 2. Our kind of "home depot" thing is Bunnings, (also our most famous restaurant lol), and thats a fat monopoly. Only kind of silver lining is that this one APPARENTLY (not an expert, fact check) actually makes things cheaper. The profit margins on each individual item is so low, small businesses have to increase prices to keep up. Because bunnings sells so much, they can get away with having lower prices and slim profit margins per item, because it adds up so much. Still, its not competitive. 3. Yeah the airline thing you mentioned. TLDR our anti-monopoly laws are shit

When the Alaskan Airlines door plug incident happened, I was working at a Boeing parts manufacturer and it was taken extremely seriously by my company. They required more and more FOD and quality checks and more sign offs on procedures. It changed our entire process. Edit: we didn’t manufacture door parts, we did engine parts. And. Crazy seeing Lynx Air featured here! Half of our 23-person party found out that our return flight from LAX to YYZ was cancelled by Lynx due to their bankruptcy while in the middle of the Pacific Ocean during a cruise. It honestly feels like a complete blur how we were able to book 13 of the last 14 seats of an Air Canada flight and arrived only a few hours later than our original Lynx flight. Fun fact: travel insurance does not cover needing to book a new flight because of an airline's bankruptcy. Found that out the hard way. Even with all of the headaches this caused, though, I'm incredibly sad Lynx is gone. As Sam said, Canada's domestic routes are now effectively a duopoly again. We went from YYZ to YVR flights down to under $125 round trip, to back now back up to $400-600.

Japan Airlines focused on safety heavily since the JL123 crash. That’s why the only causality was the officers on board of that Japan Coast Guard plane. They won’t allow any chance of losing market share to bullet trains due to safety issues, even there’s something called the “4-hour threshold”. (This can be imagined as a boundary, where flying will be more convenient once you’ll need more than 4 hours to travel on the Shinkansen. @@j_0anna Yes, I *_do_* realize that, and I consider it to have been a very bad decision. These are intelligent people and they know (most) of their audience is intelligent. Go ahead and take vacation time with your families, then come back after Dec 31 and wrap up a video that you know will actually *be* the video your title says it will be, trusting that your audience would rather have an accurate video than a premature blow off piece. _That_ I would watch, a video that came out on January 2 or even January 10. CNN's Special on the Top Ten News Stories of 2004 didn't even include the deadliest tsunami in human history because they did exactly this: they wrapped production _before_ the year's end. And I think that's an asinine decision. Tell me why this couldn't have waited another week. Would _you_ not watch it if it came out on January 5?
@nicholaswastakenwastaken14 сағат бұрын
@@BS-vx8dg I am pretty sure that the team has an upload schedule that can only be diverted from minimally. Plus, having the crew come back in such a rush right after the year-end holidays to add in 5+ minutes worth of information and footage that are NOT FULLY DEVELOPED is basically one of the worst things that an employer could do. Would you really think a sacrifice in quality and time for relaxation for probably inaccurate information is really worth it? Now, this brings me to my last point. Feel free to skip this if you do not care about my thoughts. If you do though, I believe that the last day of the year and the first day of the next year are the most important dates that people use as a view back into the past year at a glance. Although I would still watch it after the aforementioned dates, the video loses its effects day by day. In conclusion, I don’t think that it is a good decision to delay the video with little positive effect on quality, assuming that most people have been updated on the news regarding the new accidents.
@BS-vx8dg13 сағат бұрын
@@nicholaswastakenwastaken Nicholas, thank you for your thoughtful reply. I’ll try to take your points one at a time. _I am pretty sure that the team has an upload schedule that can only be diverted from minimally_ I’m not sure where you get this idea from, but looking at the releases over the past four months, I detect no such regularity. But even if it is true, so what? Instead of this, release another, and then release this EOY video in an upcoming slot. _having the crew come back in such a rush right after the year-end holidays to add in 5+ minutes worth of information and footage that are NOT FULLY DEVELOPED is basically one of the worst things that an employer could do_ So let’s say the wrap day for this was December 15 (obviously I’m just making that up; I have no idea). If the Korean crash had happened on December 14, do you think they would have left it out because there was no time to “fully develop” it? Balderdash. News about airline crashes is *_always_* tentative, often for many months. There may well be additional information about some of the events included in the video coming out in the next few months, but that doesn’t mean it was irresponsible to include those. We’re *not* looking for this video to be a definitive assessment of the events, because that’s beyond the scope of what this was. Because remember what this was: It was a *LIST* . Yes, that’s first and foremost what we were promised, but they failed to produce an accurate list, so that someone looking at this trusted source in ten years will not get the information they were expecting. We were let down. _Would you really think a sacrifice in quality and time for relaxation for probably inaccurate information is really worth it?_ As I have made clear, I am 100% okay with prioritizing the staff’s time away from work. But the idea that this was a choice between accurate information or staff happiness is just nonsense. And you speak of “probably inaccurate information”. But that’s exactly what we *_were_* given: inaccurate information. That’s exactly what I am pointing out here. _I believe that the last day of the year and the first day of the next year are the most important dates that people use as a view back into the past year at a glance. Although I would still watch it after the aforementioned dates, the video loses its effects day by day_ I am quite sure that most people in the news business (and I include Wendover in that, as the stuff they produce is better than most of what networks produce) would agree with you. But I think we’ve learned over the past few years-the last year especially-that the media has a pretty poor handle on what most people think. I see a significant number of people here who are also annoyed by this. The question is, would people be annoyed or put off if the video was delayed? We can’t know for sure, but my bet is that the people who love the high quality content that Sam and his team put out would include nearly zero people would be angry about an end-of-year summary that came out in January. But a _lot_ of people would appreciate it, especially in years when something major happens at the end (which is not all that uncommon). _I don’t think that it is a good decision to delay the video with little positive effect on quality_ Little positive effect on quality? If I published a list of the Ten Greatest Presidents in American History, and just left one or two off, would that be a tiny matter? Of course, you say, but that is different, because this had the pressure of a deadline. And I’m saying that that deadline pressure was self-imposed and was done to the detriment of the quality.

@@BS-vx8dg i mean to be fair, i don't think anyone would have expected not just one but two catastrophic plane crashes within just days of each other right at the end of the year

@@noahmyg First of all, just leaving out _one_ of these would have been irresponsible. This isn't about how many events they missed, it was about the failure to include _all_ of the (read it with me) "20 Most Important Flights of 2024" Events don't happen based upon "expectations", and anyone over the age of 9 knows that sometimes big events happen at the end of the year. The worst tsunami in all of recorded human history happened in the last week of 2004, and therefore was left off of the "Biggest News Stories" lists of 2004 by _several_ news agencies, and that means that these archival articles are almost misinformation. The real question is, *_Who would have been hurt by waiting until after January 1 to complete this video properly?_* Answer: no one. Give the staff two or three weeks off at the end of the year for a job (very) well done, but then *do the video correctly* .

@Wendover One small issue with the video is at 7:43 you use a map of JFK for United Airlines. They are based out of Newark and havent served JFK sine the end of Covid.
@andyjay7292 күн бұрын
But isn't Newark often billed by airlines as "New York-Newark"?

Off-topic here, but there is appropriate video onto which to post this: Dear Wendover Productions, I DEMAND you produce a full-length behind-the-scenes documentary of your lawsuit (in conjunction with Legal Eagle and Attourney Tom) vs. Honey/PayPal. This is the perfect opportunity for you to branch out into documentaries... I am actually fairly certain you are likely doing so already.

An note on Kangerlussuaq is that there will still be 2 weekly flights to Copenhagen on a 737. (At least this summer). And on Greenland there is also Narsarquaq airport, which can handle the a330, and the Thule air base where the a330 sometimes flies with military personel.

Not to be super picky, but at the part about Alaska 1282, the aircraft type you listed was the Boeing 737-900. It was the Boeing 737 MAX 9. I know you go over your mistakes (no matter how big or small they are) over on HAI, so I expect this to be there.

An honorable mention for notoriety in 2024 flights: the low-altitude mid-air collision between a WW2 B17 bomber and a WW2 P63 fighter at Wings Over South Texas in summer 2024. Not only was it a huge blow to the small fleet of WW2 warbirds still operational, it was by experienced airshow pilots at an airshow that should by all means have been a highly-controlled and safe operations space. The incident had a huge impact in the General Aviation community, the warbird and history-buff community, the aircraft restoration community, and the airshow circuit industry.

At 19:17 the text on screen states that the Russian aircraft was a high wing Antonov An-148, but the aircraft on screen is clearly not a high wing plane. The plane on screen looks like a Tupolev Tu-204 / Tu-214.

The 777X was supposed to be flying since 2017 not 2019. At least that is what Boeing first made public. There could of course have been delays before they ever made an announcement already on top of that. At this point it will likely be 10 years delayed, if not more.

5:10 as a Canadian that usually takes one short round trip home and back around Christmastime, I appreciated the existence of the budget airlines but they were (and the remaining one still is) profoundly unreliable at that time of year. I went back to only flying with our Big Two (Air Canada and Westjet) because I had a flight get cancelled while everyone was standing at the gate staring at the plane we were supposed to board sitting right outside the airport windows

Perhaps a video on draken, atac or Top Aces is in order? They all fly supersonic privately owned aircraft. Jared Isaacman has his Mic-29, Starfighters has several F-104s, there are lots of others out there. Boom might someday do something very cool, but they haven't yet and there is a big leap from a one off experiment to building a type certified airliner.

A small but important correction - there’s no evidence that ‘clear air turbulence’ caused the SQ321 incident. Recent news reports indicate that the pilots may have instead flown directly into a thunderstorm.
@drtcgtheplayer52832 күн бұрын
More importantly, the passenger who died aboard SQ321 was caused by a heart attack due to his underlying medical condition from his old age. Furthermore, he was seat-belted, meaning he did not experienced any physical injuries like hitting the head at the roof. Hence, the air turbulence indirectly caused his death.

I work near PDX in Portland, OR, like the far end of the runway kind of stuff. Planes fly over us all day and night. It was terrifying to know a port door had just jumped ship while in the air - and that it took so long to be found.😢 Thank you God no one was sucked out or squished by this incident. ❤

Kangerlussuaq Airport is kind of a famous fuel stop for smaller aircraft flying over the North Atlantic. To me the flight over Greenland getting there is nothing short of breathtaking, the landing is pretty easy, the departure windows are frustrating and when your on the ground it kinda feels like you're in Sheridan Wyoming.
