Airlines do not have to prove their competitive pricing practices are financially sustainable like other industries do. For example, if Chevrolet began charging $5 for the Silverado, Ford and Ram could take them to court for price fixing to eliminate completion - that is anti competitive and illegal. If Frontier charges $1 for a flight from Denver to Orlando, that is completely legal, even though they’d lose about $10K every time the flight occurred.

Every time passengers of an incumbent airline are humiliated, kicked off for no reason or have their teeth knocked out there is an uproar with people saying, they will never give that airline business ever again, but they eventually do come back, because there is no feasable alternative. One interesting and entirely unmentioned factor that likely will substantially affect the probability of startup airlines success is how they can address the massive pilot shortage in both the United States and abroad. It will be a challenge for new companies with less desirable compensation and work rules to attract and maintain pilots. You definitely did a great job exploring some of the other factors!

I would have thought that securing routes would be high on this list as well. You can imagine there's a lot of untapped market for Heathrow to Lagos, but even if you got all four of the things on this list, you'd still be out of luck because Heathrow doesn't have any slot-pairs.

Ahhh Cape Air. I had the pleasure when I was 18. There was only one pilot. I sat in the right pilot seat. It was SO much fun. Airlines are sprouting up in Canada atm... which is GOOD given before now we had essentially two choices, equally as expensive. One of those airlines, Flair is kinda like Breeze and was also founded by WestJet execs. My flight school airport, which is next door to Toronto Pearson, is now running flights all over North America. It's a load of fun sharing the runway with a 737 in my little Cessna. One thing not mentioned in your fantastic video... pilots. There is a major shortage coming. Those airlines that provide the best pay and benefits to pilots, along with good customer service, will survive.

The rise of JetBlue is quite interesting. They are considered budget but their flights basically has all the characteristics of a mainline airline, like American. No carry on fees, first class in the cabin, in flight entertainment, free snacks and drinks and recently, trans Atlantic flights. The only reason they are considered budget is because they have low cost seats but by most definitions, they really aren’t a budget airline and fit the criteria to be a mainline

Your information is usually well researched and consequently quite accurate. There is an error with regard to the Ansett/Virgin discussion. Ansett was NOT the only full service carrier at the time of its collapse. Qantas was also operating at the time and has always been a full service carrier. Virgin started off as a low cost carrier and sadly that is what they've gone back to being. As always great video :)

Ansett was not the only full service carrier in Australia when they collapsed, they had strong competition from Qantas who just five years earlier had merged with TAA. You also didn’t mention that Virgin Australia started as a low cost airline and it would be almost 10 years before they went ‘full service’ which many would argue is where they went wrong, as they were now marketing them selves to have the same quality of service as Qantas, which they were never going to properly achieve with their infrastructure.
