Romancing her as a good character (for example an Aasimar Paladin who went Angel Path, yes I know, very on the nose ^^) is kinda weird, considering that you have to let her get away with murder a couple of times. *However* I also think that would be an interesting story. Imagine someone who tries to uphold good and law, yet they are hard pressed to do so when the one they love does bad things and one thing has to be chosen. Either you potentially destroy what you have but adher to what should be, or you choose love and hope that you can make her better, but with the weight of your selfish decision looming over you.

Wenduag is one of the best compaions in any game for me. She's just so... real. No sudden changes on the spot. Makes mistakes but strives to learn from them. Knows better then to deal with sympathy, wallowing or moral high grounds. When I look at Wenduag I don't see a "freak". I see someone that is better then the average person that gets consumed with fear and pushes away. I would even say the later is far worse then any confrontational dark act. People that look down on others just for existing, they create and make the monsters. Like, say, Darth Vader. Jedi had a "right/should" attitude. Anakin didn't feel like he had a place. etc. Wenduag's story is pretty similar to that. She lost her tribe, she killed her own farther (not knowing during the fight). She broke, she was sent over the edge. Went through hate, pain, suffering. Perhaps apathy too. The reason Wenduag knows how to be strong is because she's been weak. If you've never been weak then you've never been strong. Wendaug's farther was a good addition. Which further gets combined with how Sul shows concern for Wenduag (and vice versa). Which further leads to Wenduag confiding in the player. She puts on a show of being strong but knows when she needs to turn to others after admitting she's been a bitch. The repsonsability makes her even more likeable because she knows full well what she does and states as such. They really wanted to go all out with the character here. I knew she was going to be an interesting companion but I didn't think she'd have this much detail. There's also other more subtle things I pick up on others might miss. Like how she understands it's important to face and confront pain and fear and not avoid it (she wants to feel. The worst as well as the best. It's made clear in chapter 4). Simply put, avoidence of conflict breeds more conflict. Same is said for pain. Escapism is the path of self destruction (what's more, that of others). There's no control there. If you try to "avoid" it then it will circle back and linger. Instead Wenduag faces it at the source as soon as she can. Wenduag makes it about "power". Is under the imperssion no one else can understand unless someone suffers "exactly" like her. Thing is people have done so. And it didn't need a stinger. hate, fear, pain, apathy. The only thing that could have made this even better was having conversations like that. Of how "love" is so often spoke of carelessly with sunshine and rainbows when in reality it's got a darker side. Honor too can have its uses under the right conditions (kingdom come delivance states a good case about it at the end). It's also not about what people "deserve" or "earn". At the same time she's ingonrant about kindness so it makes sense she'd think along those lines. In truth Wenduag acts out of fear. A fear of being weak. A fear of not being understood. A fear of not being useful or of failing to protect what's important to her. She turns it into anger and uses it as fuel to drive her. beats wallowing. "Strength" is not a stinger, or an item, or a magic sword. It does not come from others, unless others are an inspiration for you. One does have to break and be weak to know strength. Wenduag knows that much. What she doesn't seem to understand is that others can already understand the situation she's in. Without the sympathy. One could say she's found it at the end and is learning to adjust. I'm also glad they didn't "goody two shoes" her. Or just make her "evil just because". There is an appeal to the darker side of things. And what people see as "good" or "nice" can cause so much harm, damage danger and destruction (people aren't as "nice" as they pretend to be). Overall, out lash killings aside (which is mainly because of people judging her as "wrong to exist"), Wenduag is pretty well rounded. Furthermore she knows to explain a situation clearly regardless of how she feels about the other person. This is more clear when she faces Lann (both times). Why is this important? Simple really. Awareness factor. Both eyes open. She might be a liar, but at the same time she's one of the most honest people there is when it's clear the situation is that important (explaining things to Lann when meeting him again is a great touch). Awareness leads to honesty. Honesty leads to trust. Cut out the judgement and sympathy and you'll go further with her. She'll gut you if you dare to cross her. But she'll warm up to you if you show you have a brain even if she degrades you and hates your guts. She didn't really want to kill Lann (regardless of wherever she does or doesn't). The struggle and inner conflict makes her seem more relatable. This is where a compainon like Camilla drops the ball. Who can not be talked out of murder no matter what you do. Wenduag is more "grey" while Camilla is simply "black and white". The lack of interactions with Camilla on a whole also don't help. We see much more of Wenduag. So the difference between the characters and which got more attention to detail is pretty clear. I was actually hoping Arueshalae would be the depraved compaion that struggles with the middle ground. Since she was too... "nice" she just comes across as naive (and this is coming from somoene that went with the desna mythic). Wenduag on the other hand SHOWS she struggles instead of just saying it. She's never once shown that she's a coward that flees from her problems (showing how "strong" she is even if she struggles. Basically Wenduag will always face her fears/you). She also states "What. Where. Why." Presents good, solid valid reasons for what she does. While also displaying that she can question herself when she's not certain. Wenduag is also concerned about "fitting in", but I learned not to think along such foolish lines. Even humans see other humans as "freaks". Better to focus on individuals. Generalizing leads to assumptions. Wenduag seems to understand this, even early on. She also caught on with Ember right away, showing how observent she is. People that know pain and how to overcome it understand. Keep in mind Ember isn't as stupid or naive as she might appear to be. Seriously, Ember gains the favor and protection of Nocturnal. Both are seen as freaks but for different reasons. People tend to fear what they don't understand. This is important to take note of because the two characters are designed intended and meant to be misunderstood. Underestimate them, assume, insult and compare to others (like "children" or "freaks") and you'll look like an idiot when you finally understand them. Both have brains. Both know what they're doing. Neither is an idiot. One makes it more clear then the other however. I find both Wenduag and Ember interesting, but I'm not sure if Ember understands "wanting" pain like Wenduag does. If Ember does understand that then she doesn't show it. But then she rarely "proves" herself or feels the need too (misunderstanding her doesn't mean you're right about her). What's clear enough however is that Wenduag knows there's more to Ember then meets the eye right away. I paied attention to that. Despite priviously stabbing me in the back I knew to trust Wenduag's judgement on the matter. If Wenduag is concerned after events facing demons then that's to be taken note of. Looking death in the eye is likely what drew her attention. Showing how brave Ember is. Would have been nice to have had more going on between them then a few comments when camping. Which are good moments. Unfortunately Wenduag doesn't say much in Ember's quest lines. Still, if Ember can have the stones to challenge Nocturnal herself and gain them as a protector (even if breifly for a compaion quest) then it proves Wenduag is correct in her observation. As impressive as Ember's feats are at times Wenduag is the one that notices when others fail too. In short she's pretty damn observant. What these two characters have in common is that they state the "obvious". They say what they think. Both understand it can be overlooked quite easily (and too often is even in real life). Both are very different people and yet also have much in common. Neither are cowards or back turners. Both make it about "acceptance" and won't push away. for that would be weakness. This brings me to Arueshalae who only tried to "forget" her past, which is why it caught up with her (I honestly find her "good" approch... flawed. Not enough struggling/conflict/both sides of the coin instead of just one). The companions in this game contrast each other pretty well for the most part. Each has their own flaws and concerns to be addressed. Arueshalae changed too quickly and there was no "the darker side has a point at times" or "The light can be dangious and why". We don't get those conversations with her. We do with Wenduag. In short, Wenduag is someone that can challenge the player with the player challenging back. We get to "excahnge" viewpoints and it makes more sense with Wenduag when we find the middle ground. The reasons are made clear. That's why I don't much care for Arueshalae. Because we're basically going "I agree unless I'm uncaring". That is too black and white. Wenduag on the other hand makes the player work for it. You actually have to think, consider and try to understand her. More then any other companion. This is why it feels more rewading with her. I can't compare her to Lann because I don't pick Lann (nor am I far enough in act 5 to have both yet. Having to restart actually). They see something in each other though. it's like they're "mirrors" that refect each other. At least that's what I gather from the confrontations between them. Both of them can see the other has a point when challenged as well. Both by the player and with each other. This is RPG dialogue at it's best. They also got the voice acting done well in those key moments too. Things like this is what makes up for the games flaws. Still hate the timed quests in the "army" phases though.

was very interesting to read, thank you! I didn't play with Wenduag because my thought of train was like "I'm leading the crusade and can't afford someone who ate flesh and stuff like that be around me in high hierarchy of crusaders army" (Regill-like thoughts). Because you can think of redeeming someone only if you are in such great power, that that someone can't harm you. But when the crusade is at stake? (roleplaying view of things). When there are millions (?) of ppl relying on you to end the demonic plague you can't chase the redemption of one demon-worshiping-spider-girl. So she needs to be dismissed for the crusade's cause. I agree that Aru is hollow. Nenio is hollow in her way too. Even Regill usually has only one color (grey from bleaching! hahahaha). Every companion is made somewhat extreme in traits. You just pick the traits you like... Also it's fun that sometimes Camellia reasoning Ember is 100% correct.

@@adriaan4808 beats me chief. People tend to bitch about having the clasic good girl romance (you know the one, the kind, pretty, innocent), and the devs probably wanted to avoid that. At least arue redeems herself, and wenduag actually turns true neutral at the end of the romance. Other than that, i dunno. In the background you can kinda see what they went for eith the romances (4 male, 4 female, of which 2 are non-companions, 3 good (sosiel, arue, the queen, 2 neutral (wenduag at the end, lann) and 3 evil (camelia, nocticula and daeran). Maybe trying to balance things and make something from everyone took away from the freedom of a unique personality. That's my opinion thus far. Reminds me of that movie pet where the dude cut off his finger to prove his love to crazy girl them she stabbed him and tortured him in the end. At the very least wenduags reasoning was sound cuz it would explain a lot of things about her if she always has demon blood whispering to her and how its hard to shut out so youd understand her better and how awesome it was of her to decide to be better for you. Think the reason the whole nice guy meme exists is cuz of how often its written into these games. @The Infinity Sock That's because Camellia was isolated for her whole life. She's never had anyone to challenge her. Her own farther kept her brushed under the rug. When confronting her farther she outright states her anger stems from being a prisoner. In her own home at that. Her farther had good intentions that backfired. Both deal with lies and secrets. Wenduag might lie at times, but she'll also explain a situation when it counts. Awareness factor. leading to hoensty and trust. At least in regards to taking each other at your word. The scene with Lann (both the first and second) displays this quite effectively. I also agree with some of Wenduag's views. Though some of her methods are counter productive. I actually consider Iomedae to be even more dangious then any monster, just for the fact that she lectures you for giving demons a choice to walk away. What monster or demon will even consider doing anything differently if they'll just going to be smited anyway? Ember on the other hand challenges demons and does it without the judgement or lectures. As out of control as Camellia is I think she's meant to be. She's designed that way. the part I take issue with with Camellia is the the player is forced to go along with her murdering if the player wants to keep her as a companion. Regardless of high one the players perception and diplomacy is. The whole of act 5 feels rushed/unfinished and chances are Camellia was one of the last companions to be added/worked on. Her quest lines are short, lack alternate outcomes and she opens up far too quickly (Seriously, the "Are you ready" line?). It just doesn't make her very believable. Even for what she is. Mainly it's the part when she faces her farter. It's all good build up right until the point Camellia says "talk" when he's confiding in her. The first reaction after that was done well enough. But then it just... stops. Everything else would have made sense if the end of her last companion quest had more "meat" to it. Even just having Camellia and her farther talking more (like with Wenduag and Lann) would have done it. Questions. Reasons. Answers. With a nudge from the player of course. Since we can't do that, the player doesn't have any other choice then murder lane. Without reasons or talking about why at that. If I have a high perception and diplomacy score and can talk my way through any other situation then it's like putting the game "on the rails" with Camellia. In a game that revolves around multiple choices/outcomes. So the end result is pretty weak as a result.

@@taramaforhaikido7272 Wenduag and Cam are both evcil characters, but Wenduag is evil out of necessity and the shitty hand she was dealt. Cam meanwhile is evil because she was born twisted. Iirc, she killed helpless animals as a child.

Im on my first playthrough and everything was going fine but at the start of Act 4 when I talked with her in the Nexus, she went "everyone has noticed you don't care about me anymore, lets break up" or something and I couldnt even answer, I just got friendzoned out of nowhere lmao what. Also, I never got the tavern scene in act 3, altho I did everything correctly up to that point.. Time to bang Camellia, I guess.
