Wera turbo review, love it but hate it

Here's my two week review on the Wera kraftform turbo VDE.
I'm a big fan of most of Wera's products but maybe my expectations were too high for this.

I don't know people are surprised that gearing up reduces output torque. In gearing mode, your output torque is quartered with this. You wouldn't try to drive up a steep hill in top gear, which might have a gearing ratio of 0.85. We gear down to increase leverage. Wera are very clever, but they cannae change the laws of physics.

funny enough I got this driver for that reason, well not only that reason but speed + reduced torque sounded awesome especially working with stuff like garden tools where everything screws into plastic and is easy to crack, sure it wont replace the proper torque set but if you don't need to work to some spec why spend the cash

Concise summary, with a demo of the driver in action, in about five minutes; couldn't ask for much more from a review video on a tool I was curious about (besides not being deafened by the intro muzak 😉)

This screw driver is for Electricians. So main purpose is not requiring a lot of force. So for electricians its perfect for an Carpenter is not good.

the multiplier is definitely for getting screws started but then turning it off for the final turns.

Quite a good vid to show off the product but I do think your disappointment stemmed from unrealistic expectations, as is so often the trend in modern life. A manual VDE driver is obviously never intended to whip in screws into hard materials like wood and take the place of a battery impact driver, so I do feel that part of the review was a bit misplaced. Really good to see it in use and think I might get one. Thanks for your time and effort producing the vid dude. Thumbs up emoji

I often find I'm holding something with one hand and using the driver with the other, would be cool to have had a design that allowed one handed use. People that complain that it's got no power didn't have their thinking cap on when they bought it. Anyone with any engineering qualification should know you can convert torque to speed but you can't have your bread buttered both sides.

The self adhesive velcro works well. It's still stuck to my festool tool box and I remove/replace the bit set constantly. We're is pretty good. It shouldn't "shit gears" if you don't abuse it.

I love wera but I just use my fingers to spin the skinny screwdriver shaft on screws like the electric box example he showed. Thanks for the video, I had to check this thing out

I've got the Kobalt Double Drive, which has much larger handle and more grip. Not recommended for electrical work as it's not insulated like the Wera. Still a great piece of kit though.

I own the normal krafform set for electrical applications and im very satisfied with it. Due to the small package it safes a lot of space and weight, which is important to me due to the fact i travel all around the world for my job. As you mentioned it is very hard to put screws into timber with it, which is surely right, but my question is who does this kind of job with normal screwdrivers or this gear system? Everyone uses power drill for this or maybe a rachet system if no powered tool is available, at least all ppl i know :) And another comment mentioned they make a non-insulated version, but this is more for mechanical work on a cars if im not totally mistaken.

There are two types of screwdrivers the DIY and most pros need: The VDE ones which are *only for electrical work* and impact rated screwdrivers, the ones you hammer on the top. The two are mutually exclusive, don't use one where you should use the other.

This has gear ratio that increases the rotation speed of the head but as result the torque decreases. Any task that you would need to apply quite a bit of torque, this mode will not be useful as a result. so using it to for screwing into wood by design will not be good application.

Yea these are made pretty much ONLY for electrical work. Hence the insulation. They make similar ones for just regular bits and stuff but they'll disappoint you just the same sadly. tried like 3 but realy want this one for the electrical work I do. it'll replace like 15 of my full insulated screwdrivers lol

Great review, I don’t think wera ever intended it to be for putting screws directly into wood but like you say more for accessory screws. I have a number of we’re kit so looked at the handle on its own which is around £63, I’ll probably end up buying it but think price is a little high and I wouldn’t normally say that about wera products.

You should try a Klein rapid drive offset screwdriver.

The handle could be massive and you still wouldn't get the torque you wanted. The 4-1 increase on speed would directly correspond to a 4-1 decrease on the power, so unless you had arms like Terminator era Arnie, you'll not be driving anything heavy in the high speed mode no matter how good a grip you can get.

The turbo screwdriver by itself is about £40 120, which is likely around £90 isn't for "a screwdriver" is for 2 VDE rated screwdrivers and 14 VDE rated long interchangeable blades and a really nice pouch to store it all in. If you just use one or a few sizes of the blades you can get the screwdriver and just a few of the blades you'll use the most for a much lower price. Even less if you don't need the VDE rating.

I agree with the review. Bit disappointed that virtually any resistance renders the gear drive useless. However for the mundane tasks like cover plates or device attachment screws it's great. Oh and "press that button tomorrow and the gears will shit out the end" is pure gold. I'm waiting for the same....;)

Flat head = SL or slotted ; looks decent but most the time you're holding something and only have one hand on the screwdrover. Good idea but poor execution I'm still waiting for a ratchet insulated screwdriver
