It’s easy to think of Muggsy as a kind of novelty because he was so short compared to the league and sort of think about how good he was relative to his height. But, he was a force to be reckoned with. Players hated facing him. His stats speak for themselves

The reason that it is so difficult to be small in the NBA is that you have to be able to defend your position. Even if you can score, defending guys a foot taller than you is very difficult.

Muggsy had ups. He couldn't dunk but getting high enough wasn't the problem -- it's that he couldn't palm the ball in one hand. But you don't need full control of the ball to block a shot.

Enjoyed this. Muggsy also has acting credits as well. He appears as himself on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” in the episode “The Surrogate” S4E7 , as well as in the movie “Space Jam” with Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, et al. Also, Spud Webb, who had a 14 year career in the NBA, and who won the 1986 Slam Dunk Competition stood 5’-6” tall. Damo- hold onto the dream!!!! I believe in you!

Other undersized players in the NBA include Spud Webb (5'6") who won the dunk contest at the All Star game one year, Calvin Murphy was 5'9" and was one of the best players in the league in his era, multiple time All-Star. Nate Robinson and Isiah Thomas (no, not that Isiah Thomas, a different one) were solid players in the 5'9" range.

What helped Muggsy, is that until he reached the NBA, Muggsy was always the best, or one of the best players on his team. I saw Muggsy when he was on the Rhode Island Gulls of the USBL, the summer before his rookie season. He was part of the tallest (Manute Bol, 7'7")and shortest men in basketball.

When I was in high school I played with a guy that was around 5'3" and could dunk with an alley oop. He was quicker, more athletic, and had handles better than everyone, but still wasn't the best player. Height makes a huge difference in basketball. Talent wise, you have to be unbelievable to make it to college playing bball at anything under 5'9". To make it to the NBA you have to be 1 in a billion. I don't think we will ever see a player like Mugsy Bogues again. Even Spud Webb at 5'6" or 5'7" was an anomaly.

I was a kid in the 90s in Canada when I started playing basketball. It was a year before the Raptors formed, and basketball in Canada was not popular. I was also on the short side when I began. Muggsy was my greatest inspiration during an era with Micheal Jordan. He played during the era of the most dominant big men, and he did it with grace and style, and a self-confidence that you could feel in your heart. Thanks Muggsy for teaching a young, short, Canadian kid that he could play too.

7:16 - That's Wardell Stephen Curry, Senior (aka Dell Curry). You may have heard of his son, Wardell Stephen Curry, Junior (aka Steph Curry). Dell was a solid player in his own right playing 16 seasons, 10 for the Hornets, all of those with Muggsy in some capacity, and winning the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year in 93-94. Both he and Muggsy were selected by the Hornets in the 1988 expansion draft held with the Hornets and the Heat. He and Larry Johnson were 2 of the 5 NBA players featured along with Michael in the original Space Jam. The others were Shawn Bradley (7-foot, 6-inches for someone at the other end of the spectrum), Patrick Ewing, and Charles Barkley. Frankly, it was a terrible starting 5. You had a point guard, 2 bruising post power forwards, and 2 lumbering centers. Michael shouldn't have had to work so hard to take care of a team of monsters who stole that groups abilities. 😅

He's shorter than the average American woman. He was still a genetic freak though. Built like a brick shithouse for his size, had legs like tree trunks and incredibly fast. There'll never be a player like that again. That he started in 556 games during the era of big, bruising, physical 7' footers is an exceptional feat. Moving forward I think it'll become rare to even see players under 6'1" get heavy minutes as a starter.

Defense is a huge issue for small players, coaches don’t want to have to hide players on defense, Isaiah Thomas had a mvp season in 2016-17 but wasn’t respected as a real best player in the league in large part due to the fact that he was a cone on defense

Why aren't there more guys that small in the NBA? Think of it this way: there are very, very few guys AT ANY SIZE who are as good a natural point guard as Muggsy Bogues was. The quickness, the court vision, the pinpoint passing, the ballhandling. So take the very small number of guys who can play point guard like that at the NBA level, and THEN think, how many of those guys are gonna be that small?

Unfortunately, players who lack size are overlooked (no pun intended). The NBA in it's current state is moving closer and closer to positionless basketball, where every player from point guard to center can do everything. Handle, Shoot, create space or their own shot. Because of this, scouts are looking for bigger bodies like the Giannis', the Chet Holmgrens, and the Wembanyamas. Guys who can at the very least put the ball on the floor and run an offense through them. Smaller players are getting less and less attention because their lack of physical talent concerns scouts and coaches about their ability to play with the bigger bodies of the NBA, especially on defense. It takes an effort like what Markquis Nowell did in March Madness for people to look past the physical limitations and look at their potential and full body of work.

If you can shoot 3s like peak Steph Curry your height isn't that relevant on offense. And vintage Muggsy's defense would be even better today with refs calling the game a lot tighter, people couldn't just run him over or shove him like in the 90s.
@henrimarjoan7876
@henrimarjoan7876 8 ай бұрын
@@psymar I think players are so skilled today that 160cm guy would be a liablity in defense no matter how good he is at defending. But it would be easier to try to hide him like Trae Young in this era with no illegal defense so yeah if hes cheat code at 3s with good passing I can see that happen. I hope we will see something like that.

Long comment on switching on picks that lead to not having as many short folks in the NBA anymore. One of the reasons that you don't see too many guys this size in the NBA anymore is due to most of the teams switching on pick-and-rolls/pick-and-pop. Instead of going under, going over, or hedging, most of the teams are now just switching and it creates mismatches that the offense can exploit. I left two links of the same video (not sure if the UK blocks accounts) of Dirk Nowitzki at 37 years old dropping 40 points, exploiting the Blazers for switching the pick and rolls. You just post up 7 foot Dirk on a 6'5 guard and it's 2 points for Dallas. Derrick Harper the Mav's commentator states it within the first minute of the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqXFcmysmdJ0Y8U kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpTclKWYgbykn5I
