3:55 This clip was from the NL (National League ), the top tier of hockey in Switzerland. In the NL, teams can only dress a maximum of 6 non-Swiss players per game. That's what the guy was yelling about: "You wouldn't even have a job if you weren't Swiss!", which is a pretty bad insult to a Swiss player.

For A little context the guy who was being asked if he drank A Coke today is Phill Kessel. It's well known he drinks Coke and has A couple hotdogs before each game along with A bowl of Wisconsin cheddar cheese literally as he's from Wisconsin. He's also the reigning NHL Ironman at 1064 consecutive games and counting. He also missed A lot of games in his sophomore year due to cancer treatment. He is loved by all his teammates.

Some context for a couple of these since I don't think you fellas speak hockey player haha. Pigeon = player who skates with skilled players on the ice and picks up their scraps to tally points. Hence, implied to have little skill. When Giroux asked Kessel if he's drinking pepsi, that was alluding to Kessel's noted love for hot dogs and hate for formal training. Despite this, Phil Kessel is one of the best athletes in the league. Clearly, the dad bod is peak performance for a human being if you take it from Phil Kessel. If you look up Probert, watch his fight against Wendel Clark in 92 please. As a Leafs fan so I was on Wendi's side but it was very close. And everyone knew it was going to be epic. In the time before social media and google, everyone knew the game didn't matter. Probert and Clark were going to go at it.

That’s the first major generation of nhl talent from the Soviet Union, before that it was just veterans the Soviets were willing to let go because they had young talent to use (along with Fetisov flexing his muscle and making them let him leave) but Fedorov, bure, and Mogilny all defected in pretty unbelievable ways to play hockey.

Diving in hockey is incredibly rare compared to soccer. It doesn’t hurt to fall on the ice, it hurts to get hit, but not to just hit the ice. Diving gets a massive target on your back immediately

I hate divers. But I gotta say in soccer the "rewards" for diving are waaaay bigger. It could lead to a goal, which is generally much harder to come by than in hockey. And retaliation is just boneheaded in soccer since you can get kicked out of the game if it's bad enough. So since diving in soccer is subjectively more beneficial and the punishment more infrequent, especially in key situations, it happens much more often than in hockey...

You mentioned a line brawl at the start of the game. Made me remember what happened in 1987. The Flyers and Canadians had what turned into an all out melee at the end of the pregame skate, about half an hour before the game even starts. No officials were on the ice to break it up

There was also a big fight when Wilson from the Washington Capitals hit Panarin on the Rangers. He was a star and was hurt. At the beginning of the next game vs. Caps they had an all out brawl. I think that was the game you’re talking about.

There was a brawls between the Nordiques and Canadien during warmups...because a guy shot the puck in the net. Half of both teams got ejected from the game because it was against the rules to come back onto the ice after tou gobto the lockerroom There was 3 or 4 straight line brawls between Ottawa Senators and the New Jersey Devils. I don't remember what the reason was but definitely somebody took offence to something.

Hockey players are, on average, the most creative trash talkers in sports. The rules have moved the sport away from letting guys actively try to murder one another on the ice (watch a line brawl from the 80s for comparison) so I think players might have redirected that energy toward more cutting words.

Boston, Philly and Montreal use to have massive fights in the 70's. No helmets and giant hair. Fights spilling into the crowd. I recommend looking into these teams.

When you guys spoke about the hockey game where everyone started fighting right at the beginning brought back a great laugh and memory for me. I used to live in Reno, Nevada, and a while back we had a minor league team. On the night I went we were playing a home and home with the team from Sacramento, California. Apparently there was some really bad penalties and fighting that went on the night before. To the surprise of the whole arena we had a special guest who was singing the national anthem for our game. That person turned out to be Tonya Harding, and if you don't know who she is, I'll let you guys do the research. Needless to say, as soon as the puck dropped everybody, including the goalies, put down the sticks and went at it. Priceless.

She pled guilty to conspiracy charges, and was banned for life by the US figure skating association. She later competed as a professional boxer, because of course she did, and she's since bounced around various reality shows and the like, also appearing providing commentary on shows like "World's Dumbest Criminals".

I forget who Montreal was playing (probably Buffalo) but they had Matthew Barnaby on their team and he scored a hatrick near the end of the season and in typical Barnaby fasion he showboated. That set the stage for a pretty good fight, and over 100 minutes in penalties when the puck dropped in their first match of the following season.

Boys in hockey love to swear. Loved Sill (on the Pittsburgh Penguins) taunting Dionne (I think he was on the Ottawa Senators at the time?). He taunts him and then says Dionne’s gonna kill me. Hahaha. There’s another one of Sill when he decides to fight someone and another player on the opposite team asks him to fight and he says no, I’m gonna fight this guy. You’re too big for me. Hahaha. The quickest way to start a fight in hockey is to touch the other team's goalie in any way. Another way is to put the puck in the opponent's goal when there is not live play happening, like after a whistle or even during warmups.

When guys talk about diving, also known as embellishing... some guys will go down too easy to draw a penalty. It's definitely frowned upon amongst players. If the dive is bad enough, you can even get a penalty called against you for it.

Gordie Howe could fight orthodox or southpaw with one punch knockout power. A boxing expert did an article about 20 years ago and had him as number one. On February 1, 1959, he had such an infamous beatdown of NHL tough guy Lou Fontinato that it made Life Magazine. Probably considered the most famous fight in NHL history considering it's age and lack of video. Lots of pictures of the aftermath, though.

For the old clip at 3:00, the sound is probably coming from the TV camera. The technology for putting a microphone on a player was likely too bulky in the 1980s, and the old men who ran the NHL back then almost certainly would not have approved of it. They might have claimed it was a violation of the players' privacy, or that it interfered with the often-ridiculous policy of "let the players police the game." The NHL has never been known for being good at marketing its product; back then, there was virtually none. Have you ever reacted to an old-fashioned brawl of two entire teams? Before the late 1980s, every player on the bench could come onto the ice to fight and receive only the standard five-minute penalty. Now, it's an automatic ten-game suspension. My favorite is the "Brawl in the Hall" in 1986 between Montreal and Boston, because I watched that game (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gneqdn14oNt_l9E). Pay attention to Chris Nilan, number 30 in red. The old Boston Garden had many flaws, one of which was that the path to the visiting team's dressing room was right next to the home team's bench. From after this fight until the new arena opened, a security guard held up a piece of Plexiglas when the visiting team walked past. It was called the "Nilan shield." Another famous fight was the "Good Friday Massacre" in 1984 between Montreal and Quebec (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHOUXpZprsSJpMk). Fun fact: brothers Dale and Mark Hunter played on the opposing teams.

The NFL Mic'ed up are now made from the league, the actual organization, so it's now entirely sanitized. They've removed most of the swearing. It's meant to present the league in a palateable way. The older ones have more shit talking. Now the players are mic'd it's not sideline mics. They players are trained to not say stuff they can't really air or have to sensor. So the NFL mic'ed videos they show now are sanitized. Watch some of the old one. As opposed to the clips in this video which are older. These are mostly from before the leagues got to using mics for marketing videos like "mic'ed up". Trust that the shit talking exists in the nfl, it's just that's edited out of current mic'ed up vids. Even the current NHL ones are typically sanitized because they now want to make videos like these for their website and youtube page and use it to draw in people and they also don't want the negative attention of somebody that's going to whine at all the cursing and whatnot. Even though we all know it's happening.

The reason you might not have seen any diving in the NHL is because there isn't much diving these days because they introduced an embellishment penalty. If they had that in soccer, 75 minutes of the game would be penalty time. The two clips of players bitching about diving were from European hockey not NHL.

Players dive all the time in order to draw a penalty. Just like soccer. If the player behind you gets his stick anywhere near your skates, players dive as if they got tripped in order to draw a tripping penalty or if a player is behind you and is stick is anywhere near your waist they will dive to get a hooking penalty called

An impaired Rob Ramage was driving and had a car accident which resulted in the death of his friend Keith Magnuson in 2003. Ramage served several years in prison. Good thing I looked it up, I had the story backwards in my mind.
