I think people too quickly jump to conclusions about them being crazy. Understand that a lot of this was to set examples and a show of power. Things like Caligula making his horse a consul was, imho, not at all an act of madness, but rather a message to the other politicians that he could do whatever he wanted and that he valued his horse more than them. The same with making two senators fight as gladiators: it's a warning and a show of strength that he could do this and face no consequences. Don't be too quick to judge intricate power plays as madness. Same with portraying yourself as a god, hell, even Alexander did that.

Agreed. In addition, related to displays of power -- as you describe well -- is Corruption of Power.

Or that he was saying a horse could do a better job than them. We elect dogs as mayor even today.

I have heard that the Caligula had syphilis. As did Nero. In it's advance stages, syphilis is known to cause madness.

Was there mentaly ill emperor ? "Elegabalus, Calligula" - are those names ringing a bell ? Also Domician was not as bad - senators just hated him. Cruelty of Valentinian I was justified - it was Enpire or Germanic invaders.
