In this second part of our reaction series on Werner Günthör it's time to get intensive. In this video you'll see some of the most impressive plyometric and jump training ever captured.
We'll also discuss how concepts like triphasic training and the shock method are incorporated into the intensification block that builds upon the concepts we discussed in part 1 of this series.

Great that you show and explain this training. It is very impressive. In the eighties there was no training equipment as good as today. In Magglingen where he trained, a training machine was built for him, this was called the murder machine. Today, especially ice hockey players, who also train there, admire this machine. Günthör is also an athlete with the longest standing long jump.

As Dietz once stated, the holding 3 plates in that range is also a specific adaption. As time increases you will not only increase the high thresholds, but will also train neural pathways, even some localized activities. Even if I didn't had a scientifically backed explanation right now, I wouldn't stop using the holds, every athlete I worked with that described me having a vague feeling of their knees feeling "weak" in that range esp. will get rid of it. I hope its not only a placebo but, the success rate is just to high to let it slide. Great video series, really glad I found this channel. You, Max etc. aren't great promoters of this channel, link and post it way more often. Would love to hear your thoughts on sprinting mechanics in soccer/football. I have paid too many sprint coaches now and everybody gives me a different answer on how to analyze film and interpret it. They can't make any predictions, all they do is come up with bs rationalization afterwards on why it "works". You assessment of the sprinter in the seedman video was very enjoyable, but Id also would love to ask you why so many players run with completely different styles while all reaching consistently high to mid 30km/h numbers. For example Raheem sterling has the worst hip position swings his arms like a girl and yet manages to be fast. Ronaldo swings his arms like a gorilla from side to side since the dawn of time. Many more to list but not one track/sprint "expert" could explain anything to me. Your take was very understandable I'd love to hear what your thoughts are on this matter. Sorry for the long message, maybe it helps the algorithm!

You should check out Brian Oldfield, the guy invented the spin technique for shot put, he could run a 10s 100, dunk a shot put and was the first person ever to throw over 72ft....and he did it a decade before Gunthor. Gunthor is a legend, the 9th best shot putter ever, Oldfield is the 8th.

With regards your analysis of the upper body work not being plyometric, I had a couple of questions. Firstly, there's some evidence that the intended speed of movement preferentially recruits fibres and drives adaptation more than actual movement speed. Could this be at play here? Secondly, we know that the upper body can store and use kinetic energy for a few seconds, especially in trained athletes. Is it possible that rather than plyometric/not plyometric being a straight either/or scenario, that there is gradation, and some plyometric benefit and utilisation of the SSC could be experienced?

SSC utilisation is not recruitment of fibre, and it's proportional to magnitude and rate of stretch detected within muscle spindles. So the speed simply isn't there for this to be an adaptation. For sure he's tapping into FT fiber but they're different adaptations and this is not a plyometric

No problem! As you alluded to it's also not a clear dividing line where something suddenly starts or stops being plyometric because the contact time is X. But most would set the bar at around 125ms for fast plyo and 250ms for slow plyo, and this would still be a big amount away from this IMO
