TV isn't like this anymore, sadly. I saw Klemperer on Broadway in a revival of Cabaret in around 1990 - Joel Gray in maybe his last performance as the MC. Very strong performance; Klemperer really had a fine voice well suited to the part. Back then all of the actors sang and danced pretty well.
@billrose995411 ай бұрын
Absolutely agree. There was talent then that maybe 10% of entertainers possess today.
@LeonAllanDavis8 жыл бұрын
Just gorgeous. John Banner is delightfully off-key... As a young boy Robert Clary sang in a Nazi concentration camp to stay alive. He wasn't murdered because he could dance and sing and he had a beautiful voice. John Banner was Jewish and emigrated to America. But he lost a lot of his family to the Nazis. Werner Klemperer was Jewish on his father's side. Came to the US in 1935. Was a fine violinist and concert pianist. A real gentleman.
@timirish25636 жыл бұрын
Yes--all true! Even the recurring characters of the General and the SS Major were played by actors who were Jews. I particularly liked Klemperer, who created one of the best and original farcical characters ever on American television. For many years, Clary hosted a public access interview program in Los Angeles which focused on Jewish Identity and the Holocaust. It was well-budgeted and had many A-list guests. I recall the brilliant Theodore Bikel spoke seriously, with some sadness, about his playing many European characters in his career--but very few Jews. Sometimes you could catch a glimpse of Clary's camp number-tattoo on the inside of his wrist.

Thank you for acknowledging this, as I also added above, with even more detail, the irony that Klemperer and Banner played Nazi soldiers though they are Jew (though Klemperer is not halachicly Jewish as his mother was not Jewish). I met Clary in 1988 as he told of his concentration camp experience. How interesting they all dealt with the plot of “Hogan’s Heroes” with extreme wit and humor, charm and grace. In a similar vein, my Dad who served in Cuba during the Korean War immediately didn’t think he’d like “M*A*S*H” because it made fun of the war. But in time he came to appreciate the fine acting and writing in that series exactly for that reason. These were terrible times and as one can expect the Jews found ways to survive by finding the humor in it as a post-traumatic therapy. I believe some of “M*A*S*H’s” writers were Jewish too. Something about being Jewish I suppose is that we find great humor in irony.

If I remember more than once the heroes put on a vaudeville style show. They could have easily had a group of the Germans sing German Christmas songs. The only thing stopping it was I think it might have been a running joke that Klink was just as good with singing as he was with the violin. But I'm sure they could have had him singing well just for one episode. That would have made a great Christmas episode! Everyone singing their national Christmas/holiday songs. 🎶😃🎶🍻🎶

Klemperer was in several episodes of Have Gun - Will Travel as different characters, as well as Perry Mason and a 2nd-season episode of Law & Order as the father of a man obsessed with a soap opera actress.. If you couldn't any of these actors in anything other than Hogan's Heroes, maybe you should broaden your horizons.

I grew up listening to Bing Crosby, my favorite Disney movie is Headless Horseman & The Toad all told & sung by Bing’s extraordinarily beautiful singing voice, he sounds Angelic. I got to meet him, my grandparents worked & lived on the world famous King Ranch, my grandfather was only a cowboy & grandmother was a maid just like their parents & their parents parents, I got a job at 13, only because of blood relatives. When I was 15 they got me a DL for agricultural duty , and one day I had to drive their Bulletproof Pullman Mercedes to their private airport & made trips all day to the grand mansion, and my job was to clean dog kennels, dog poop, clean & car for all hunting dogs, and clean stables of thoroughbred polo ponies. As I was called by one of the maids to take clothes & pickup clothes from the cleaners, I heard Mr Bing Crosby in the garden, while reading the Wallstreet journal he was singing. We were never to look at the people who visited & always had to look down while always taking off our cap/hat, he was insistent on talking to me, and one of the Special Texas Rangers told him “Mr Crosby their trained not to ever talk to the visitors of the King Ranch mansion & they know this because all his ancestors have all been born on this ranch & are buried here, they don’t have their own home or car, these people are absolutely devoted & dedicated to never break the rules, or the entire family can be thrown out of the ranch. I never got to say a word, but I split quickly after the talk Special Texas Ranger allowed me to get back to work. I also saw Ken Curtis “Festus” from “Gun Smoke” and Ronald Reagan when he was a governor, and he tried to tip me $100 when I loaded their luggage into the Falcon 550 one of numerous jets the King Ranch owned, but I didn’t take it, and I remember Mrs Reagan saying “Dear, your going to get all his family thrown off this beautiful ranch, don’t you understand they are the peasants of Captain Richard King, and all his family are now in control, but his Ken back when this ranch was founded also had Mexican peasants that care for these family members now” I knew I wouldn’t get in trouble because I never took one penny from anyone & I always got to work 30 minutes ahead of time, but the wonderful people I got to take their luggage, drive during bird hunting season & drive the diesel Pullman Limousine made special in Frankfurt Germany using Texas Oak inside & King Ranch Santa Gertrudis bull hide instead of carpet & cream cow on all the upholstery. It was the best time of my life in the 70’s while I worked there, and truly my favourite job because I was trusted with millions of dollars of autos, equipment, etc. Sorry for the rhetoric, but Bing Crosby actually was a humanitarian & a phenomenal personality as was all the actors like Ronald Reagan before he became governor, I would see them yearly , and was privileged to drive them in King Ranch hunting cars .

I don't know if anyone has posted a comment like this yet but the 3 people mentioned, Werner Klemperer, John Banner and Robert Clary were all German Concentration Camp survivors as well as the actors most of us remember them for being..
@williethebeerman3 жыл бұрын
better check your facts. Werner Klemperer's father, the great conductor Otto Klemperer, moved his family to the us in about 1933 when Werner was about 10. Banner emigrated to the United States in 1937 from Switzerland. Robert Clary was the only cast member who spent time in a Concentration camp.

Well, I am impressed. Werner's mother was an opera singer, but he always claimed no musical tallent. Sounded pretty good to me. John suprised me. He was Jewish. I knew he could sing, and I knew him as a very, very nice man. It shows in the emotion he put into the song. Two wonderful actors and great men. Thanks guys!

Ironically all 3 were Jewish . I saw Werner in Cabaret in San Francisco in the late 80's. Followed him off and on after that. He was a class act. He played Klink on the condition Klink was never a hero.
