We have a new podcast out - bit.ly/2LuoLFG This time I talk with fellow video essayist Thomas Flight - who I'm sure many of you already know. We talk more about Wes Anderson, as Thomas has made some great videos on the director. It will be up on all the common platforms (Apple/Stitcher/Spotify, etc).

Rudeness comes out of Fear. That one line from the Grand Budapest really does sum up a lot of his characters' psychology! This was a really thoughtful analysis of Anderson’s comedy and thematic reoccurrences. Thanks!
@attentiondeficitsquirrel76605 жыл бұрын
I LOVED this. Wes Anderson’s films are something that one either appreciates or doesn’t understand. It’s far too often that I hear one say that “it’s too perfect” or “it’s too framed” like it’s a bad thing. Completely missing the point that that’s the point. He doesn’t want you to forget that you’re watching a movie that’s really more like watching a play.
@archivehans5 жыл бұрын
He uses the framing of a play but takes the advantage of lightning and refined ness of a film. Also you can't really have the same level of sets in a play

When I read someone critical of Wes Anderson film, it basically tells me that they are the type of movie viewer that wants to turn their brain off and be intellectual coddled for 90+ mins. Or...they just don't have any intellectual abilities whatsoever! Anderson is an wonderful storyteller for the simple fact that he is genuine. He takes inspiration from his own life like all great artists. His characters are based on either people he knows or inspire him. He also gets the best from the actors that work with him because he's genuine. It seems as if there is very little ego in Wes Anderson. I believe the French Dispa is his best work yet. I've see KZbin reviews and read some complaining the movie is hard to follow becuae of the multiple stories and too many characters with not enough time spent on character development. This..,just freaking amazes me. He created a magazine that came to life with incredibly rich characters all while paying homage to multiple writers from the past but, the French culture, Art, the New Yorker Magazine and the French Youth protests of the 60s. All in his Witty and whimsical way while still capturing the human spirit. There is so much absolute garbage coming out of Hollywood the past decade or more. From comic book movies that are just ridiculous to Hollywood elitists passing moral judgment on flyover country as if they have any moral right too. Anderson tells stories we can all relate to because at some point... we are all scared and frail people looking for redemption like an Anderson character. We don't always find it but we manage to find a way to go on.
@snemehta32745 жыл бұрын
There is something so appealing about his movies, and it really is that refined quality, which sudden breaks from refinement. The coloring and framing are just whipped cream - that is to say, essential to the experience
@fakecubed4 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate this video went all the way back to Bottle Rocket and represented films across his whole career (at least up until time of making it, The French Dispatch is coming out soon). A lot of KZbin videos about Wes Anderson tend to focus on the most popular films, or some of his more recent ones, and seem to forget his oldest films or less popular films exist. This video was clearly produced by a true fan of the director.

In my lifetime (whatever is left of it), if Wes Anderson doesn't win an Oscar for Best Director as well as Best Movie, it will be the greatest tragedy for art as a whole. *P.S: For those who can understand it, Wes Anderson is the Hollywood equivalent of Steven Wilson.*

I want to like Wes Anderson's work more than I do. His long form commercials are great. He achieves a great look, masterfully shot and delivered but I can't get past the soul-lessness. I want him to make just one film with solid characters that I can care about. I get that he is poetic and fairytale-like and that works really well in some of his films but, for example, "Life Aquatic" was a mess. Is there a Wes Anderson film where he makes you cry or feel elation?
