I was so glad to hear Wes speak. I was at Standing Rock during the time of which he is speaking and, yes, my experience was very powerful and meaningful, although we did not go to the casino, but stayed in Oceti Sakowin camp. In spite of the harshness of the weather, I did not want to leave, and my granddaughter kept asking, "Why can't people be like this everywhere?" I agree with Wes on his evaluation of what we must do and the speed with which we must do it. The veterans are a special resource for the people. Such a great idea.
@bernardkovalchik20637 жыл бұрын
I was one of the officially signed up vets from WA State. We brought two buses, about 10 private vehicles, and over 80 vets. I am very glad I came to Standing Rock but the logistics were bad at best. The line of cars and buses going in was a couple miles long and it took a couple hours to finally drive in. We supposedly had two tents reserved for us (half of one tent we volunteered to some vets on a bus from CA). The command tent gave both tents to some of the unsigned vets and we had no place to stay. Our chow was eaten by the other vets. We were out of luck and on our own. Storm came in = survival mode. The uninvited vets and citizens were responsible for a lot of the chaos resulting from too many people for the space available. Other than that, it was worth going as the corp canceled the easement on the 4th and the world paid attention to the situation where the DAPL Blockers were being treated obsessively brutal by the Gestapo North Dakota police and their allies. The organization needs to go on in a militarily organized way. No fly by the seat of pants approach. Supply depots, chain of command, permanently paid staff, a registry of authorized serving vets, etc. Identifications issued. Organize and train by local platoons. You get what I mean? My wife is going to the Million Woman March the day after the inauguration. I will continue to come but need an official organized vet group the next time. Get professional organizers to help you. I will come. PS: great job Wes given inexperience and the unexpect enormous response.

Planning for a few hundred and getting a few thousand....it's very hard to adapt to that quickly. Even with military organization, numbers are nearly the first thing decided. I suspect a "multi level marketing" approach would work best. ("You're responsible for those that signed up through you." more or less.) And, most importantly, these guys actually DID it. "Bad at best" is much better than not at all.

Wow. Wes has had a serious dose of reality. See how clearly someone sees after an experience like that? That used to be the way we all lived, if you go back enough generations, in a true community - which is so much more than an address. The Native Americans gave the Europeans who became Americans one of the most enduring images of their culture: The Cowboy. The strong, silent, honourable man of the wilds is not a European trope. It is original to America, where the opinion of the Native American formed by those people who actually had dealings with them was an antidote to the poisonous propaganda espoused by the proponents of "manifest destiny" back in the Eastern financial centers where the profits from the Westward expansion ended up. If this was more widely recognized I don't believe that such treatment of them as we see would be so widely tolerated. The rest of the world still has a lot to learn from Native American culture, and Wes is proof that it's not too late. Respect to all the water protectors, Native, Veteran, non-Natives, everyone. I include Jordan and TYT in that group.
@LadyhawksLairDotCom7 жыл бұрын
I know. I have _never_ felt a sense of community. I almost said I felt such a thing before I became an atheist, but that's not true. I knew if I dared do something against the religion, community would be wielded as a weapon. And of course that was exactly what happened when I could no longer believe. I suffer from many chronic illnesses, but I want to make a difference. I think the climatologists who predict the worst might be right. Climate change can't be denied where I live. Billions of trees are dying due to drought and lizards were still active as late as November 18. That's not normal. Once, before I die, I want to feel I belong. Maybe that's selfish, but I want it so badly.

brightbase, clearly he doesn't say that he recognizes it in that link of yours, he just states that he will refrain from commenting about it, meaning that he is basically now "agnostic" about the genocide. Imagine if someone like Sam Harris for example went from denying the holocaust to saying "I don't know enough about it so I will refrain from commenting on it", clearly that would be almost as bad as denying it because of course they know enough about the genocide to comment on it.
@Naskinlahtaaja7 жыл бұрын
brightbase If he acknowledged the genocide, why wouldn't he just have written or stated anywhere that "I now do acknowledge the genocide". People just like point to this as one of the more blatant ridiculous flaws in Genks opinions. Some governments don't like to acknowledge it because doing so would be seen as a political statement and it would probably harm relations with turkey, that is why governments and political figures get more of a pass than independent people.

Just a few comments on what Wes said about the science of climate change. Methane lasts an average of 9.1 years in the atmosphere. During that time methane has a global warming potential (GWP) of roughly 110, meaning that per unit mass it causes 110 times more warming than CO2. Over a 20 year time frame, it has a GWP of 86, according to the IPCC AR5. Over a hundred year time frame, it has a GWP of 34. There is a great deal of debate over whether the methane locked up in the permafrost and the ocean floor will be released, and the impact it will have. No scientist that I have read is sure that we have 8 years as Wes argues, but there are a small number who say that it could happen that quickly. Studies which have modeled the climate impact of a giant methane release say that it won't kill all life on the planet and won't cause a runaway greenhouse effect so Earth ends up like Venus. However, it it does happen, we could see a massive collapse of human civilization and the starvation of most of the human population. It is very, very scary, so Wes is right in terms of the sense of urgency. We just aren't sure how fast it could happen and most scientists would say that 8 years not likely, but within the realm of possibility. Nonetheless, it is important to keep in mind that we are currently loosing Arctic ice in a way that most scientists didn't think would happen until the 2050-2080 time frame, so Wes may be right. Either way, we should be acting with the kind of urgency that Wes advocates.
@thewestwinger38557 жыл бұрын
Wrong, Wes is 100% right
@amosbatto30517 жыл бұрын
I just looked up the numbers on permafrost carbon. According to Koven et al. (Proc Royal Soc. B, 2015), in an RCP8.5 scenario (which is the worst scenario in the IPCC AR5), between 32 and 129 petagrams of C-equivalent (including methane) could be released by 2100. Given that there are 850 pg of carbon in the atmosphere, this means a 15% increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases in the worst case scenario. So according to conventional science, Wes is wrong. However, there are 1700 pg of carbon locked up in permafrost carbon. It might be possible that we have a major carbon burp like the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (55.5 million years ago), then a much larger percentage of the permafrost carbon might be released. Again, Wes misunderstands the science. We still need to act and put our bodies on the line just like he did, regardless of whether we have 8 years (as he says) or not.
@thewestwinger38557 жыл бұрын
Amos Batto the IPCC is lying through their teeth, we are on track for 7 plus degrees of warming by 2100, 3 degrees by 2050, we are out of time. At 7 degrees, almost all life on Earth ceases to exist

Forgiveness was how the Romans banished piracy. They mounted an unescapable sweep from Gibraltar to the Black Sea and published amnesty for surrender, a 180 on the usual total execution policy. It is believed that Virgil, the author of the Aeneid (Rome's Odyssey), was a resettled pirate. They gave amnesty and a small farm plot for a new start. And it worked, massive piracy was reduced to zero and stayed abated for hundreds of years.

Some said 15 years to the end of our ability to maintain a human population. I haven't read any reports lately, but with the ice caps melting and methane spewing out of the permafrost RIGHT NOW...8 years seems generous.

This issue really needs a change in tactics on how we tackle it against the corporations/politicians/religions, and GP don't have much of a success record here.

WashupCyclone I don't see how recycling a plastic spoon can help with climate change. A quick and radical change is needed and we, the rational uncorrupt people, need to brainstorm a strategy that will break money, politics, religions, post-truth, distractions and anything else standing between us and global change. We need to use any strategy possible to achieve this goal or else we are simply doomed regardless of who people think is right.

+The Heretic It's difficult to imagine an argument that will change the minds of billions of people. It's an attempt to convince people to value future generations at least as much as the current one, when the current generation can't even provide a decent standard of living for all people alive in the world, let alone in the US. That being said, it has to be understood that endless economic growth on the part of every nation in a closed system cannot be sustained, even if global warming weren't a thing. It's as if we forget that wealth/money has a physical reality, and can only be extracted out of matter (consequently destroying local ecosystems and those dependent on them). Our economies need to shift towards being reflective of the fact that we are part of a system and not on top of it, and that the further this goes on the more we prolong the suffering of billions, again let alone other species of animals undeservingly dying out. Nature will be unforgiving.
