It is always great to see how a new country accepts cruisers. The whole welcoming party was next level. Too bad Parlay wasnt there, that would have made it epic. But all in all great passage and New Zealand is simply gorgeous.

Thanks for the mid week lift! Nothing like a little WEsail to get me over the hump on "hump day"... My favorite part of the passage was reeling in that monster tuna, I would say it's the largest one I've seen caught on a sailboat. I don't really have a least favorite, unless it's the 6 days inbetween videos... 😁

When I worked on oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, I caught lots of lemonfish (aka cobia & ling), usually 60-120 lbs. They are very good eating. I do not see these fish being caught on any sailing videos. Have you guys ever caught or seen anyone else catch lemonfish? I used "caught" but we actually harpooned most of them from the bottom of the platforms. What's the boat at the bottom right at 21:46? NZL 32?
@DavidM-g9d
@DavidM-g9d 8 күн бұрын
"Lemon fish" in NZ is the name for a shark species that used to be common here in Fish and Chips. I think that might be similar in some other countries as well. Buying Fish and Chips here used to be called "Shark and Taties" as in Shark and Potatoes. Don't see a lot of deep drop fishing in these sailing vids, Mostly just trolling as they sail, hence no Ling or similar. The boats also tend to stay clear of structures where Cobia might be more prevalent. NZL 32 is the boat that won the Americas cup from America in 1995. There are a quite a few ex Americas cup and Around the World racers here either on display or available for crewed sailing charters.
@lowellmccormick6991
@lowellmccormick6991 8 күн бұрын
@@DavidM-g9d That makes sense. I harpooned lemon fish from the catwalk of the platform and not trolling from a boat like I did when fishing for tuna. I was told that their mouth was soft and the hook always pulled out so that was why harpooning them was preferred. Yes, NZL 32. RIP Sir Peter Blake. When I was in Newport, RI 25 years ago, there were a couple of AC 12 meter boats there. For $20 you could go for a 1 hour sail on one of them and get to helm for 5 minutes. Instead, we rented a Beetle Cat at Mystic Seaport for half a day.

Oh sorry our misunderstanding, I thought it was called both, Aotearoa first by the Maori and then much later New Zealand by the settlers, and since both still call it home we were just trying to be respectful to both, that’s all
