Wes Barker is a magician and comedian doing funny tricks, and telling great stories. Watch here for hilarious magic, stunts, and pranks. I am the funniest magician that is also a stand-up comic, or maybe I'm the comic who is best at magic. Either way you get the idea. I tour all over doing colleges, comedy clubs, and corporate events. Catch the adventures and tricks right here. With this magician / comedian based out of Vancouver and Toronto, Canada. I make funny stuff. That’s my only rule. Everything has to be funny, from street magic to stage illusions, as long as there is a joke to be made. I do magic tricks, sketches, stand-up comedy, card tricks, mind reading, and tricks with naked people. I’ve been on America’s Got Talent, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, MTV Greatest Party Stories Ever, and Wizard Wars. You can find me pulling pranks on friends, gags on strangers, or just general sleight of hand, magic, illusions, and the occasional bar bet.

I always appreciated how, towards the end of the Illusionist, it is revealed that the effects previously shown in the movie weren't actually as perfect as they were made out to be, but rather, just like you say, they were shown this way to match the experience of the audience in the story itself.

"No one is floating inside a bubble"... Well actually back in the early 1990s, Sigfried and Roy did a levitation where Sigfried was inside of a giant balloon. He was visible inside the balloon but it wasn't as crystal clear as this bubble.

"It is emotional true if not factual" This reminds me of peoples experience when the first phonographs were invented. If they closed their eyes the listener literraly believed a band was playing. Now when we hear old recordings we cannot understand how they could believed that, since to our ears it so obviously a recording.

It still stands with television images. When DVDs first came out (and with them, 720p "High Definition" video), my parents and I were watching a movie, paused it for a bathroom break, and my mom commented that the picture on the screen "could be a Rembrandt." Now I sell $98 TVs that people complain have 1080p screens instead of 4K and they're "mediocre".

I would like to see a historical discussion in full detail on The Prestige much like how you talked about The Illusionist at the end. Specifically, I’m curious to know if they actually killed birds back then and how/when magicians changed their methods. Also, I would like to know your thoughts about the main piece of monologue in the movie presented by Michael Cain where he explains the 3 steps of a prestige and how much truth that has.

@@antoniodiavolo that's entirely possible as well, however I haven't seen the show recently enough to confirm that. I know any setup would be done off camera, making reverse engineering the tricks incredibly difficult.
@antoniodiavolo
@antoniodiavolo 4 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Gilson One of their main claims is no camera tricks or stooges so ig it depends on what you define as a camera trick. Imo, a camera trick would be a trick that could only work on camera. So that would mean like most of the stuff Criss Angel used to do on Mindfreak. I think all of these tricks can be (and are) performed live for real people, but as I said the important bits (like forces) are done off camera so viewers can’t reverse engineer it easily. And tbh Im fine with that.

I'm no magician so great respect for your opinion and I accept that the forced 7D on "Now you see me" can be done in real life. But I think that for the filmed trick I think they did it digitally. My reasons for thinking this is that the card shows for exactly 2 frames. I might be wrong, but I think that's probably the fast and easier way to do it.

Bubble + Wires is fine, for some things... trying to pull off small object levitates inside bubbles would be about the extent of it though. Having a (dry) performer hop into the bubble wouldn't work though, and even to consistently get bubbles of that size might make it not work often enough.

Have you seen the Prestige? The two doors trick is not fake (although as filmed is) but has a solution tied to major plot reveals. The impossibility of the trick and the rivalry driven by it is central to the story. The trick is intentionally "impossible" in the story, that's the point of it. You really should watch the movie. It is excellent.

So regarding the bubble having it float and jump into it would not be possible. Still, you could do something very similar; you can form a bubble above someone and have them move inside. The issue is it won't like long, and it's hard to do without having it pot unless you use a specific mixture; you can use ad chemicals to the bubble soap mix that makes it so it's possible to have the bubble so it won't pop on impact when inside and touching the sides. Also, if you had the person set to an invisible floating rig, you could have the person float away with the bubble intact, but the number of things that could go wrong would be enormous. Check out some old videos of Melody Yang Gazillion Bubble Show. Demonstrates different types of bubble equipment use that you could use to get a similar effect. Yes I'm way to into bubble magic/science :P
