I never understood how does that pathent work? Is it that when you drag (scooping the gravel) gets into carry position by gravity and then when you losen up the cable,it tumbles over and dumps the gravel?

This is controlled via the short tipping rope on the drag shovel. If the lifting rope and digging rope are tensioned, the tipping rope is also tensioned - then the contents cannot fall out.
