This isn't a recognized tournament, and Magnus is better at blitz. Kudos to wesley for beating Magnus 3 times, though. That itself is an achievement that he can be proud of. But still, Magnus is the reigning world champion for classic, rapid and blitz. Maybe Wesley can compete this 2020 and grab the championship from Magnus. Hikaru would be there too, so it's an interesting tournament this year.

We cant afford to support players from other sports because of lack of sponsors since theres always a stigma that chess is just a pass time game here and not a sport that we have to pay just to watch others play. Its sad but its the reality. If you have the resources, you should support our local chess federation. That is, if you want to since its gonna be a one sided investment. Even in basketball only MVP and some major private companies supports the game, not the government. But atleast those companies will get their investments back from the people who watch the games even if the team loses.

Just Another FS it was the Philippines value on basketball players rather than other sports. Wesley lived in a poor community, people saw his talent but he wasn’t able to play internationally. He didn’t have the money and couldn’t represent The Philippines. He had to wait 4 years until he had enough money to move to the USA and register for the FIDE Federation. Doing so, he represented the US now.

Around 2014. According to him, it is because of corruption. The final coffin is when he was supposed to get 1m prize from the govt for winning a tournament. For some reason, that tournament is not included for that incentive.
