First of all, kudos for documenting rock in Kolkata, albeit the focus was on a single band. However, you missed the mother of all rockers - Mohiner Ghoraguli. This is akin to omitting Dylan when talking about Classical Rock. I grew up with Dylan, Floyd, Purple, Straits, Led Zep, Cream, Hendrix in '70s, '80s Kolkata. On the domestic front groups like Shiva & High left their mark. So much so that I played bass for our JU rock band in late '80s. I was heavily inspired by Lew Hilt, the bassist of Shiva & High. Its interesting to hear Gen Z talk about Dream Theater, Slipnot, Bon Jovi, Nirvana, Linkin Park, etc. instead of Purple, Sabbath, Cream, Straits, Led Zep, Beatles, Dylan and others. This shows how different their perception of rock is from a Gen X like me. In fact, I stopped listening to rock once grunge appeared on the scene in mid '80s because the show became more important than substance. It became all about performance, excessive instrumentation, fuzzy guitars, headbanging & screaming hoarse in the name of singing. The balance between words & instruments was lost. The intellectualism of Classic Rock disappeared. And then in January 2023, KZbin dropped Choke by The Warning on my feed. Never in my wildest dream could I have imagined that 3 sisters from Mexico would reignite my passion for rock. I even watched MTV VMAS in 2023 after a hiatus of more than 3 decades!!! Life is indeed full of surprises.

Bro, if you really want to explore rock in Kolkata, google about debashish and his band Atmahatya.. and interview him. Believe me, you won’t find similar sound anywhere in west Bengal or even Bangladesh. One of the best but much underrated.. just like the old line up of krosswindz
@namesake80753 ай бұрын
Well, bengali band started on 1970ish with Mohiner Ghoraguli, they didn't have any particular genre, Legendary Gautam Chattopadhyay created a musical hub and mentored many bengali bands like Lakhhichhara, Krosswindz, Shohor and many others. Even two unsung heros of bengali band culture, Subrata Ghosh and Joyjit Lahiri with their band Gorer Math also collaborated with Mohiner Ghoraguli's different albums. Many aren't aware that one of the most famous bangali band song 'Sohorer ushnotomo dine' was not created by Mohiner Ghoraguli but by Gorer Math. However, first bengali rock band album was from Krosswindz, when their album Poth Geche Benke was released, it was marked as first bengali rock band album. Which was followed by various albums released by other rock bands like Lakkhichhara, Cactus, paras pathar, abhilasha, kaya. However, the band that got huge popularity across bengal was Bhoomi with their song Barandai Roddur and other fock songs. Till today, their songs like Menoka are played in many puja processions and bhasan dances. And Chandrabindoo with their witty intellectual songs created a different fanbase. Best thing happened to west bengal band cuture was probably Band-e-mataram, many new bands got exposure, recognition, bangs like Prithibi, Eshan, Missing Link, Dhumketu, Alokborsho, Shrote, Musicstreet, Calcutta blues. Basically new bands got platform, guidance and proper exposure to express their music. However, lately DJ culture and bollywood songs overshadowed bengali Band culture and the huge popularity bengali bands gained on their 2000' era fazed out. Now a days, for many bengali rock is synonymous to Fossils only.

Rock influence comes by holding the hand of the bunch of ango Indian of Bow Barracks of Central Kolkata & extremely talented Bengali teenagers like Gautam Chattopadhyay, Dilip Balakrishna etc. who were ahead of their time. Rupam Islam & Fossils and Warfaze without taking these name & bands name Bangla Rock is incomplete, he is the trend setter, he is the founder of Bangala Rock music genre.

I have always dreamt of organising rock/metal concerts like they have in Bangalore or Shillong. Like I want to be among the organiser and bring epic bands from all over the country and the world. I just don’t know where to start, I mean I have few friends who even want to invest in organising such things. I really want to make not just Kolkata but West Bengal as hub for rock/metal concerts, being a musician myself I feel sad that we do not have such concert hub here.

Kolkata rock culture is the second oldest in India after that of Goa. They used to have their own distinct style. Huge fan. But too bad now they try to copy from Bangladesh (which is basically a western copycat rock music with Bengali lyrics) and gradually losing their own style. ☹ Also Mohiner Ghoraguli missing?

@@ashrafulhossain007 Which MG song is Pink Floyd copy? Lol. Of course rock genre is western, instruments are western. But every sub genre has their own kind of improvisation. Modern Bangladeshi bands lack that, when I listen to them it sounds like I am listening to some western band (but lyrics are Bengali). Also I am not talking about old Bangladeshi bands , they had their own way of expression. But current Bangladeshi bands don't. You need to listen to rock/metal music from other countries, then you will understand what I am saying. Start with Japanese Rock/Metal, Indonesian Metal/Rock, Arabic Metal/Rock, Afghan Metal/Rock, Chinese Rock/Metal, Mongolian Rock/Metal, Latin Rock/Metal, Scandinavian Rock/Metal, African Rock/Metal and so on.
