some facts:- West Bengal have ocean (Bay of bengal) in southern most part with some parts of Sundarbans, in middle plains and mountains in most north and many forests, kolkata is capital, Asia's biggest bird sanctuary is also in west Bengal. didn't you hear about Darjeeling tea !!(if you didn't not a problem too) Darjeeling tea and assam tea are famous worldwide.Last song is modern adaptation of Rabindra sangeet(which means Rabindra nath thakur's song, who also wrote our national anthem+bangladesh's too)and you will find many bengali songs influenced by his style.

Yes though barfi was a Hindi movie, the story plot was based in Darjeeling & Kolkata (capital city of West Bengal) both places are in West Bengal. The 3rd song Benche Thakar Gaan was sung by Rupam Islam & composed by Anupam Roy. The last song Majhe Majhe Tobo Dekha Pai was written by Rabindranath Tagore. The first stanza of his song "Jana Gana Mana" was adopted as the National Anthem of India. The National Anthem of Bangladesh "Amar Sonar Bangla" was also written by Tagore. Some Historians say that Ananda Samarakoon wrote the National Anthem of Sri Lanka "Sri Lanka Matha" inspired by Tagore. He was one of Tagore's pupils in Visva-Bharati University. Some other historians have claimed Ananda requested Rabindranath to write the lyrics of the song, which he translated to Sinhalese. Tagore won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his collection of work titled "Gitanjali" (song offerings). I think he was the first non-European who won a Nobel Prize. He had also received Knighthood, but returned it as a political protest against the British Govt in India Calcutta (which is now called Kolkata) was the capital of British India till 1911.

Lots of writers and filmmakers in Kerala were influenced by Bengali literature, art and music. That's why you see that similarity in Malayalam films and music. Be it poetry, literature, music or filmmaking West Bengal has produced a lot of legendary figures. As a matter of fact, the national anthem of both India and Bangladesh was penned by Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (first non- European to win Nobel prize in literature in 1913 way before India's partition). He was a prominent figure of Bengali renaissance.

I wasn't a big Arijit fan earlier. I used to find a lot of songs similar, because every film wanted to recreate his last hit. And then I heard Astoma Sadgamaya. I sang this prayer for all my school life. The first 4 lines you saw when you searched is what we would sing. (They are actually in Sanskrit, an ancient language) And then the new lyrics and Arijit. What magic, what feel, AND WHAT A TALENT.

Guys, Lata Mangeshkar Ji and her younger sister Asha Bhosle Ji are from the state of Maharashtra the capital city of which is the home base of Bollywood-Mumbai, but they have sung in practically every Indian language! You must listen to their songs from 1960s to 1980s to appreciate their greatness, (there are 22 major languages with different scripts and over 1600 dialects in India), so dialect changes every 100 miles & 29 states are sometimes as different as Brazil is from South Africa! (I am a Bengali though)! You have NOT touched modern Indian Film music evolving from folk if you haven't heard the legendary SD Burman and fusion of India with the West if you haven't heard his equally illustrious son RD Burman! Both are deceased!

Just for analogy and understanding the dynamics of most popular languages in India, it's like: 1. Hindi is English of India, mostly generic and maximum people understand it. 2. Punjabi is the Spanish of India, with flavour and funk and oomph. 3. Bengali is the French of India, the most exotic, sweetest and soothing to ears. Speaking normal words sound like it's the most beautiful and intricate poetry ❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

The reason you see the mix of western instruments and Indian classical in bengali songs is because.. Bengali songs and literature has various versions.. from Sanskritised bengali.. which is Indian National Anthem.. folk like Baul…. Brajabuli which is more of Vaishnav Bhakti songs.. Rabindra sangeet.. who is called the Bard of Bengali.. first non European nobel laureate and composer of India’s and Bangladesh’s national anthem, then kolkata saw Jazz and blues and cabarets as an influence from British and French occupation as well highland music from Scottish… then there is series of patriotic songs as part of Indian independence movement and later post independence there was a rock and band revolution… also.. the movies contributed a lot. At one time bengali songs were remade in Bollywood e.g: Salil Choudhury films.. and Hrishikesh Mukherjee films in Hindi…. Also another bengali cinema from Ray contributed classical to movies.. Ravi Shankar composed for his movies.. Kolkata has a famous Indian Classical concert called Dover Lane Music Conference. Also, Bishnupur in West Bengal has a Classical Gharana that is a branch of Hindustani classical music.. and lyrics wise the literature compliments as bengali literature is very well appreciated not only in India but in other cultures. Even baul later had a Portuguese influence.. bengal was so rich that almost every European power had colonised parts of it.. Danish, Scots, Portuguese, Brits, Dutch, French and had seen Armenian, Greek, Turkish, Chinese traders… Historically the land had trade ties with Roman Empire.

Majhe Majhe Tobo is actually a cover. The song falls under Rabrindo Sangeet which can be classified as its own genre in Bengali music. As many people have said already, the last song is written by 'Gurudeb' Rabindranath Tagore. He's a nobel prize winning author, and a proper renaissance man of Bengal. He's written and composed thousands of songs, while being a prolific author, educationist, and many other things. Almost all Bengali people have a brush with his style of music, called Rabindra Sangeet. And even today, most of his songs are relevant, and his compositions are fresh and used, even though there's fusion and modern versions.

It was 11 years ago and a trending song back then. I was a college going girl. At that time we didn't have smartphones like today and one day a friend's phone had this ringtone. I immediately searched for this song and downloaded it and it has been on my favourite playlist since then. What a beautiful song that is and the story played for this song is great. By the way I AM NOT BENGALI but I can talk about the industry and culture of Bengalis a little as my Mom is Bengali. -Bojhena se bojhena means he/she doesn't understand. There's no affairs, it's just two different worlds colliding for accident. And in these 2 couples one loses the girl and the other loses the guy. -Jao Pakhi bolo is one of the sweetest song to hear at your alone time. Just let it rain outside, play the song and just get lost in dreams. The studio version is also really sweet. -#LiveSinging is always a Big Thing in the Indian Music Industry. Your Calibre is judged through your live singing. -Third one who was singing Benche Thakar Gaan is actually RUPAM ISLAM... His songs are mostly soft rock genre and all of his songs are ABSOLUTE DOPES... For if you guys wanna hear Anupam Roy voice check out songs like BOBA TUNNEL, JAWL PHORING or EKHON ONEK RAAT -Preme Pora Baron is from the movie Sweater which is one of my most favourite. This movie is about a girl finding her self confidence and yes how she become confident and vocal about her wishes. Lognojita has one of the most distinct voice in Bengali industry. Her songs just pierce your heart. Preme Pora Baron just hits home for me as I have always been single and I got rejected many times from guys from my teenage... So even if I feel attracted this song just plays in my mind. Btw Preme Pora Baron means Don't fall in Love -There's very few Chinese population in India, but it's established in West Bengal Tangra region. They came up with the mixture of IndoChinese cuisine which just exploded and became one of the most favourite cuisine all over India and now making its ways overseas. For example dishes like Chilli Fish( my fav), gobhi Manchurian etc. -Music Industry of Mumbai was once ruled by Bengalis especially Bollywood when the composers like SD Burman or RD Burman was there. And in that time every song sang in Hindi was also recorded in Bengali. If you hear songs of Uttam Kumar ( A big movie star of Bengal ) movies. Most songs will feel genuinely very modern and western. Also Piano used to play a big part too in songs hence you guys would love old Bengali Songs I can guarantee that. Especially songs like AARO DURE CHOLO JAAYI(Asha Bhosle) or EI TO JIBON( Kishore Kumar) or TUMI JE AMAR Special mention to TUMI KOTO JE DURE ( by Husband wife duo...Rd Burman composition and Asha Bhosle voice...it's a song one should not miss in my opinion) -Sundori Komola is a Folk song, Bengalis have Baul, Kirtan, Shyama Sangeet, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti and different genres. These songs of folk include the basic instruments of folk like Ektara or Dotara( this instrument is also mentioned in the song). Baul singing has a very wide range and the high range bar is too high. Music of Bengal is Broad, it includes different place to dive in. Songs like TOMAR GHORE BOSOT KORE KOZONA and AAGE KI SUNDOR DIN KATAITAAM are classics of folk songs. -The second last song is from movie KHAAD one of my most fav song. Arijit has too many good Bengali songs but this is one of the most beautiful song that takes every one to heaven. Other Arijit Recommendation: MON MAAJHI RE, KE TUI BOL, BISMILLAH. - The last one is a RABINDRA SANGEET, a man who is loved by Bengalis. This version of lyrics is changed and arranged a little. Rabindra Sangeet is something which just compliments a lot with Piano. You guys should check out GEETANJALI for the poems. He was the first Indian to become Nobel Laureate. He was such an intelligent man that he could see things from different perspectives and put light to things in such a way that no one had thought before. His popular compositions are AMARO PORANO JAHA CHAI, DARIYE AACHO, HIMERO RAATE. And he got songs for kids too like PAGLA HAOWA, AAMRA SOBAI RAJA. He is the epitome of how a MAN can become a symbol of a COMMUNITY. If you are Bengali you ought to know RABINDRA SANGEET. That's his value in Bengali households. Special mention: Please check out Shyama Sangeet, Kirtan, Folk, Semi Classicals, Artists like: Manna De, Shyamal Mitra, Haimonti Shukla( She has one of the most Sweetest Voice I ever heard), Bands like Cactus, Fossils; Aarti Mukerji, Nachiketa (He Just makes songs on reality and gives goosebumps). At the end: ASATO MAA SAD GAMAYA( Lead me from the Untruth to the Truth) TAMASO MAA JYOTIR GAMAYA( Lead me from Darkness to Light) MRITYUR MAA AMRITAM GAMAYA( Lead me from Death to Immortality) OM SHAANTI SHAANTI SHAANTI ( Om peace peace peace) One of the most prominent Mantra taught and chanted in our home, thanks to my mom. Also not just song but food also differs a lot. Bengali are called MACHE BHAATE BANGALI ( Fish + Rice = Bengali). They know how to cook Fish best and yes I may not be a Bengali but when you have a mom you got to love the culture.

Asatoma Sadgamaya is the Sanskrit Mantra fusioned with this Bengali song Here is the translation From ignorance, lead me to truth; From darkness, lead me to light; From death, lead me to immortality OM peace, peace, peace. Look, the sky is full of light, See, the stars make it so bright! Feel, as the world rushes by, The wind runs here & there, low & high. So many things of joy and celebration, But without me, they make no sense either. Let my fists be full of might, Let my eyes be full of tears/ sight. So that when time comes to give me a look, I can keep everything in order, by the book! (Basically means by death all my work is finished) Don't be shy, don't just go into the night! Here is no death, not even age. Come HERE my friends, alright!

I had such a blast. Loved to watch you guys love the songs that are so close to my heart. I love 'Bojhena', 'preme pora baron', 'asadoma satgamayaha', 'majhe majhe tobo'-but this version was a first for me. It was divine to watch you guys enjoy each one of these songs. Efra with his learning Hindi and now Bengali is so entertaining and endearing. So wholesome (even with all the swearing 😉) I've had so much to say but it escapes me now. Oh yes.... Majhe majhe was not made for this music video. It was written and composed by the pride of India - Gurudeb Rabindranath Tagore, Asia's first Nobel laureate. His compositions were chosen as India's , and Bangladesh's national anthems. His songs are lyrically, and musically so rich, we have a separate genre of music called Rabindra-Sangeet. You should check out some of them. Also out of the more modern songs, I would have loved to see you react to 'Kichhu Kichhu kotha' -by Arijeet and Kaushiki Chakroborty (the name that was eluding you in the vid) and 'Tomake' from Parineeta by Shreya.

He is Vocalist and lyricist of the Rock band FOSSILS. West Bengal has a very rich history of band music. It starts back in 70s. Must explore the Rock and metal culture of West Bengal. Because Bengali music is just incomplete without Bangla bands. If you need any more information about it please let me know.

The full Mantra and the meaning in English is "Aum Asato mā sad gamaya Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya Mṛtyormā amṛtam gamaya Aum śānti śānti śāntiḥ " (Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 1.3.28) meaning of which is - "From ignorance, lead me to truth; From darkness, lead me to light; From death, lead me to immortality Aum peace, peace, peace " -

Furthermore, if you are making a part two anytime soon (please make it pretty soon as a request) I would like to recommend a few songs you you can add to the list :- 1.) Bhromor by Surajit 2.) Amake amar moto thakte dao by Anupam Roy 3.) Sing nei tobu naam tar singho by Kishore Kumar 4.) Mone pore Ruby Ray by RD Burman 5.) Nilanjana (Se prothom prem amar) by Nachiketa 6.) Many many more world famous Bengali Folks. 9.) and tons of songs by Noble Prize Winner Poet Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore. If you do read this please do let me know, I can help you with the songs and search.
