Hey John just found your videos tonight and I’m excited to see an impressive log of stuff to catch up on. I’m a fisheries tech with the DEC over here in region 3 that spends all his time fly fishing the small streams of the eastern Catskills. Caught a handful of small wild browns and brookies yesterday! And yet people say everyone in the DEC just sits behind a desk and never gets out to cast a rod hahaha. Anyways some great videography and beautiful fish especially that big brookie! Excited to watch through your stuff!

Edward thats great! I worked for DEC fisheries in Region 5 for a couple years (many years ago) and for VT Fish and Wildlife before that. Im glad you found the channel. Thanks for commenting!

You are the Man! Thank you for sharing as always. Beautiful fall Brook trout are tough to beat, and NY streams are such a pleasure this time of year…. Absolutely beautiful up there this week

Great video. Yeah I tried up there on the Upper WB once years ago, had the same vibe , meh. But I bet that would perk up when the water's higher, of course. I wonder also if alevives run up that, that would be a boost. That small stream dry fly work is more my thing, (nice casting there, BTW) especially now that I'm old, and can't deal with retying tippets from snagged nymphs , my close up eyesight is lame now. Not that interested in jumping on the euronymphing bandwagon either, I just can't wade like I used to. I live in CT now (bleh) and actually like the Farmington a little better than I did. I haven't been out yet this year, but I might even try wet wading in it, I think I can handle water to about 48 degrees. But yeah wearing shorts on a small stream would be awesome. Press On.

Yeah I would like to explore up there more for sure. There is a ton of water and access and some decent trout from what i saw.

Nice recovery on the trib. I prefer tribs over larger rivers, love the intimacy. Beautiful Brookies, God was playing his A-game when he blessed us with them.

Yes I agree, I feel way more in the zone on the smaller creeks! Easier to film too!

Hey John - Really enjoy your videos, good camera work and commentary. Just a guy out fishing. I went to school at SUNY Delhi, never fished the Delaware when I was up there but hope to get up there for a day or 2 soon. Beautiful country that hasn't changed dramatically in 40 yrs. The West branch there looks like it would be tough, pretty clear water, but thanks for hitting the trib, gives a guys hope for other options if the West branch is quiet. Thanks again for your very well done videos.

The land of a thousand little rivers. I need to get out on those creeks more. Im usually targeting big carp in the reservoirs.

Yeah I totally thought it was a brown as evidence by my cracking voice when I realized it was a brookie. He was 12" so a real trophy in these parts!

I live right where you were fishing (around delhi), we have loads of large wild Brook Trout in the river and some really nice browns, from 9am ~ 3pm you'll have a hard time to catching in the open water as there are many hawks and eagles here, best to stick to bridges, white water, deeper holes and under the trees or fish early and late day.

Nice to get in some wet wading on a nice Fall day. Wonder if brookies & browns migrate out of Cannonsville Res into the upper W Branch watershed? Thanks for sharing.

Yeah it started off pretty cool that day but was up in the low 70s in the afternoon. Also I went over my waders on the WB so figured might as well lol! I would assume they definitely move up to spawn but don't have any direct experience with it

Hi John New subscriber here. I’m a highschooler from the southern tier and i’ve been non stop searching for new trout spots in the area. I’m somewhat new to fly fishing but i’ve found a few decent spots in the eastern catskills and i’ve had some awesome luck on oquaga creek . i feel like i waste a lot of time fishing water that i’m not even sure has trout. any advice for finding good wild trout water in the area?
@deaddriftoutdoors2940 Жыл бұрын
Its honestly taken me several years to find areas that are productive. I use a mix of online research, lots of looking at maps, and lots of exploring and fishing!!

start with well known areas and explore from there

I was hoping that you'd get something on the WB. I drive up that way from Hancock fairly often but have never fished that section. Always looking for new small creeks to fish.
