West Coast 3: Sexy Cannulas & Turbulence Woes

At our fuel stop in Dalhart, Texas we met Daren. He owns a Cessna 195, is a FedEx pilot and enjoys our channel. He suggested we go to Page Airport instead of Grand Canyon. It sounded like a good idea so we departed Texas in hopes of exciting Grand Canyon/Painted Desert views.
Unfortunately, as we got close to Albuquerque the turbulence off the mountains after a long day of flying became uncomfortable for Jaime. I had told her at any point in the trip if she wasn't having fun we would land. Looks like ABQ is our first night of the trip. :)

Sorry everyone we haven’t been replying to comments lately. We both still read them all. Contrary to what has been said, we aren’t divorced and are very happy together. Our job requires us to work 6 days a week lately. Between that, raising kids, etc, I’m working hard just to edit and get videos to y’all. We’ll explain 1BC and our upcoming plans soon. 😀

Kevin, thank you for clarifying. I had read some of that over on a pilot forum you post on. Seeing some troll claim you were divorced was annoying, thank you for setting the record straight.

Ditto on thanks for the update! I believe I heard there is a shortage of controllers. So yup hard to do much else when you're working overtime all the time. And absolutely family and down time to unwind comes first. I personally really enjoy your channel as I believe most of your loyal followers do, so we'll be here if & when you upload more. You are not beholding to us, we are beholding to you. Take care and Thanks Very much; Dennis

I just love flying along with you both but not having to endure the turbulence of being shaken and not stirred to get there. It's lovely that you invite us along to see some of the local sites after landing, thank you both! The engines were struggling with their breathing alright. Such a high density altitude sure sucks the power from them. I bet there's a lot more TC airplanes around NM and other desert states! Best wishes to you both from the cold South Pacific Islands of NZL, David

About 20 years ago we stopped off in Dalhart on the way to Angel Fire NM. It looks so flat people don’t realize how much density altitude you can encounter out there in the summer. But we felt it - like you did. Fortunately, we packed ultra-light to get four people in and out of Angel Fire in a normally aspirated Bellanca Viking with no O2. On the way out we had to climb while circling in a box canyon above Eagle Nest Lake (where the surface is 8,200’ MSL) to get 100 feet above the trees before turning East and flying back to Oklahoma. We used up a lot of luck that day to gain some experience.

We flew a nearly identical path about 8 years back but our trip originated in OH. Got caught in pretty serious mountain wave action too in a single engine east of KABQ. At one point we dropped 700 feet in an eye blink. Glad you two didn’t get beat up to bad. In the future my plan is the southern route. Love the channel.

Y'all were in my old neck of the woods. The area where Jamie (I hope I'm spelling that right) said "Oh, there's civilization down their." was the town of Moriarty. I used to liver there. It's pretty cool to see such an obscure town on KZbin. It's also nice to finally see a KZbin aviator land at KAEG. It seems everyone else defaults to KABQ. Double Eagle hold some special memories for me. It's been the airport I have flown most of family out of back in the day (I now live in Texas). This video certainly has me feeling a but nostalgic!!! Thanks for the video...

I haven't been in the channel in awhile, the first couple high DA landings and takeoffs in this series were not a surprise lol (I'm a single engine pilot out of Phoenix). Your ground speed is a lot higher and control response is sluggish when you are high and hot. Great vids on this trip! Keep up the great work!

The old "leave behind". That's the oldest trick in the book. Beware gentlemen, when your girl leaves behind clothes/shoes, get ready to get out your credit cards. This tactic is most effectively used with blame resulting in guilt. Well played Jaime. Enjoy your shopping trip in LA. Ha ha. You guys are great! Thank you for sharing.

I think I’ve stayed at that Hampton Inn LOL!!! Thanks for taking us along. I was actually born in Lubbock but now live about an hour north of San Antonio. I’ve driven through Dalhart and Dumas on my way to Colorado and Wyoming. You definitely have an unpleasant stench there but it’s the combination of cow pooh mixed with oil wells. If you really want pure cow aroma go to Clayton NM or Hereford, TX. During roundup you can literally see the methane clouds hanging over those towns as you approach them. Be safe y’all!!! 👍🤠👍

I watched this video with a bit of amusement. Having learned to fly in 1965 at KPRC with a field elevation of 5000 ft, the density altitude was just another day of flying. The bumps and unable to hold within 500 feet of altitude in the middle of summer, well that was normal. I have never flown a plane at the lower midwest elevations, though I was raised in Southern Indiana, just a half mile from the old Haps airport in Jeffersonville. If you didn't go to Page, Az. you missed a great opportunity. Have flown out of KPGE (?) and KGCN, and a number of trips over the Grand Canyon, beautiful flights/scenery.

You folks definitely made the right choice of airfields in ALBQ. You couldn't get the same hospitality at the International one plus you have military traffic from Kirkland The pattern is insane,( dying turbulence flying over Sandias in bound), and especially take off, you head directly AT the mountains and have to bank hard right. No mistakes or failures. The commercial traffic will run over you being a Southwest Airline hub, and rental cars are the pits located off airport. Altimeter readings are a hoot too. Just found your channel, great flying. Oh, if you like the turbulence do a stop and go in Lubbock Texas :-)

Hey, Kevin, the bad odor y’all were smelling in Dalhart, Tx, is cow poop. There are cattle feeder lots all over Dalhart, with hundreds of head of cattle in those lots. So, regardless of where you are in Dalhart, you’re gonna smell cow poop, because of the West Texas winds! However, after a while, you get used to it. I’ve driven thru Dalhart many times, in my RV, on my way to Denver, Colorado. But, then again, that’s Texas for ya!! Enjoyed the video. Be safe on your journeys, and keep the videos coming. As always, happy Flying, and safe landings!!

Ahh, mountain wave. Used to get some serious mountain wave in West Virginia (eastern area , sort of). We were cruising, alt hold on the autopilot, I think at 175 knots. The updrafts really made the AP put the nose way down to maintain altitude. Then we'd get a downdraft, heavy nose up. Then updraft. The indicates airspeed was all over the place

Well flying in the Southwest, in the summer is tough. This though with the drouth that is prevalent across the area there may not be any smooth air. During the period 2010 through 2012 I considered selling the airplane because there was no relief from the turbulence. Absolutely took all the fun out of flying. Hoping you find some smooth air.
