Blake is really inimitable in this type of rag due to the #thumbroll which many employed but nowhere near to the extent and with nowhere near the bounce of Blake. Yeah, he’s the top for me, also in terms of choice of melody, lyric and his singing. He gets little credit for the vocal because he’s not gymnastic but it’s so good.

Your best is great. No one I’ve ever heard is able to replicate his sound. They can explain it, but they can’t do it. It helps that he was born into the culture that produced this music, but even within that culture he is unique. So precise with those little rakes he does on the bass strings while of course never departing from that double thumbing.

Hitting two notes on the bass with one thumb stroke and picking with fingers is a difficult mechanism, especially while wearing a metal thumb pick, but that can be learned once the Mississippi John Hurt style is mastered. Blind Blake is inimitable but I try as a practice!
