West Coast Main Line Trains at Wigan North Western on March 9th 2023

1st visit to Wigan North Western on the West Coast Main Line on a very freezing cold and snowy morning which is also the junction for services of the Wigan - Liverpool Line
Featuring services from Avanti West Coast and Northern plus some Northern services departing in and out of nearby Wigan Wallgate which is just down the road from Wigan North Western
Wigan North Western first opened in 1838 as Wigan before it was renamed Wigan North Western in 1924
It's one of two stations in Wigan with the other being 110 yards away is nearby Wigan Wallgate served by Northern services mainly to and from Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Oxford Road, Stalybridge and Leeds via Bolton to Kirkby and Southport
There was a 3rd station called Wigan Central which opened in 1892 by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway however closed in 1964
Although on the platform layout on the West Coast Main Line may have 6 platforms however only 5 are in use with Platform 2 being one of 2 bay platforms was taken out of use when Platform 3 was extended.
Platform 1 is used by Sunday services to and from Stalybridge and Manchester Victoria
Platform 3 is a bay Platform used by trains services mainly morning or evening to and from Manchester Victoria which can be used by Empty Stock Northern Services reversing into Spring Branch Stabling Sidgs situated to the South.
Platforms 4 and 5 used by Avanti West Coast services to Blackpool North, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh, Northern services to and from Blackpool North and Transpennine Express services few services a day to and from Liverpool Lime Street to Lancaster, Oxenholme Lake District and Glasgow Central
Platform 6 is used by terminating all stopping services on the City Line to and from Liverpool Lime Street
At the time of filming due to engineering works in the Carstairs area with the remodelling of the Junction meant all Avanti West Coast services to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh were cut back to Carlisle whilst Blackpool North services were cut back to Preston plus Transpennine Express 2 trains a day service to and from Glasgow Central from Liverpool Lime Street were cut back to Oxenholme Lake District
