West Coast Swing Basic Steps - WCS Beginner

In this video we teach you how to dance West Coast Swing Basic Steps and give you a new way to think about taking west coast swing lessons.
In truth, learning the west coast swing basic steps is as easy as learning how to dance west coast swing in only 5 basic steps.
If you can dance the west coast swing left side pass, sugar push, rolling pass, the west coast swing the west coast swing whip, and wcs wrap in and out, you are 90% of the way there to becoming a good west coast swing dancer!
Too many people complicate the west coast swing basics by learning a bunch of patterns such as the sugar push or the west coast swing whip first rather than learning the true west coast swing basic steps which are more conceptual than learning the concepts of how to west coast swing dance itself.

This is helpful by simplifying the 5 parts. The fact that the five parts can be mixed in different ways is really interesting. I have wanted to learn to dance formally for over 20 years and finally made up my mind to pursue it. This helps. I also really appreciate the fact that the finished look of the dance has a lovely elegance. Dance is an amazing tradition that really inspires me. It seem for centuries, all generations had some way of organizing movement to music. What a great way to spend time and play together with a partner.

As a dancer of other styles, I can note that in this video it is immediately clear that the follower has a frame, the hand does not hang, the dynamics are in order - a very positive difference from many other videos. An a big plus - here you can see human plastic and not as usual something from hustle from which the my eyes are bleeding(sorry if you like hustle dance or discofox) - here I can only say - guys, this is really good stuff, respect for what you are doing!

I went to a group WCS class many, many months ago, and even having competitively danced Jive, Swing, Salsa, Bachata and Zouk in my younger, fitter days, I still struggled with WCS footwork. This video just sent off lightbulbs and 'ah ha!' Moments all the way through. I think I'm ready to try again! My only hesitation is, in my other dances I know how to do a basic step with no moves, is there a similar stationary/basic/break or 'thinking about next combo' step for WCS?

That's awesome! We've found that all of the social dances (Two Step, Salsa, WCS, ECS, etc) have underlying assumed structures. Those are the only things that give them the ability to become truly leadable rather than "pattern recognition" based dances.

I agree that we make this harder than it is. We do several ballroom dances at intermediate social level. We need to improve on this one. Think we will go back to basics and get them better. Excellent video. We just don't have the look in styling that others do.

The right approach with the basics is everything. Not just for this dance, but all of them. Think about it this way ... everything you learn after the basics is simply an expansion of your understanding of the basics. Get the wrong idea there, everything else will be tough.

I am a Lindy Hop dancer (been at it for over 2 decades). In March of 2020 found myself in Saigon, Vietnam where I decided to chill while the rest of the world was being ravaged by COVID. Social dancing in Saigon is fantastic (my main reason for staying here, not the COVID nonsense), especially the Latin scene. To my surprise Saigon did not have a WCS scene. So... I started one. It's very new - not really a scene yet - for now just trying to teach a group of dancers who hopefully will become the core of the scene. I've done some WCS back in Chicago (where I'm from) but I am hardly an expert on it, let alone on teaching it. Your videos are tremendously helpful - in both understanding the dance itself and understanding how to teach it to others. Thank you so much. Cheers.

You @2:01: Basic enough, right? So.... Me: Ummm, no. When I was about 10, my aunt started competing in East Coast Swing, so I learned by watching her coach the juniors. Some couples have this amazing style that I never understood. It almost seemed like they were doing different dances but it was somehow synchronized so beautifully. I'm 43, and 4 minutes into watching this, I finally understand! It also makes sense why a 90yo couple i know, danced so different to big band music. The Lindy Hop! Thank you!!

I'm gonna learn from 3:40 to 4:05. That's a cool set of little combos. My wife has vertigo (and yes we still dance!). That way I'm doing most of the turning. She can turn some. A 1 1/2 turn can sometimes put her out for the night! If she's expecting it in a routine she can do a full turn. But this combo is perfect. We do normal 8 count whips ok most of the time (regarding vertigo).

Right at 3:45 where you do the Left Side Pass with Man's Turn, you look so smooth with that Man's Turn. It's a 1 1/2 turn! It's a little hard for me to turn that much fast enough! Any hints. I start turning a little on Count 2 which maybe makes it a 1 1/4 turn. And maybe I finish a little late which I guess is OK too. It looks more like you do it with you feet turning more than a momentum thing. You totally finish your turn by Count 5. Otherwise we can do that whole series of turns after that.

You’re right. It’s a 1/4 turn on count 2 which makes it a little less of a turn. If you watch the turn in slow motion, you’ll notice that the turn finishes between counts 4 and 5. Tip: the closer your feet are together, the faster your turns will be.

As a follower I am always taken by surprise with a 6 count or an 8 count or when they add 2 to transition etc. Can you help explain how I might know so I do not get on the wrong foot at the start of his new pattern?

Hi there. If you’re wanting to know how to tell if it is a 6 count or 8 count rhythm, typically count 4 will tell you. If it is a 6 count pattern, you will be staying on the side of the slot that you are on. If it’s an 8, he’ll be initiating your movement to the other side. As far as “add 2 to transition”... if you mean giving you 2 counts after a pattern finishes before moving into the next pattern, the answer is simple (maybe not always easy). Don’t do anything because you’re “supposed to”. Do things because the leader asks you to. You won’t come forward into the next pattern until he leads you forward regardless of how many beats tick by :-)

I was looking for the full-on wrap whip where you turn as a unit (the girl leaning slightly forward half way thru with a one-arm "presentation" was real popular as an optical illusion) .....to show a male partner who just doesn't get it. I learned it in 1986 just from doing it with partners who knew how to lead it, but something gets lost in translation when I try to Show a Lead how to do it.
