You guys have got to get a bottle of The Midnight Silkie from Sliabh Laig distillery. It’s on around the same peat level as Connamara but it has so much more flavour thanks to the use of oloroso sherry casks, port pipes and bourbon barrels.
@TheWhiskeyNerd2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this definitely has that acrid, sharp edge of smoke, rather than the warm hug you normally get from peat. The bottle did improve after it was open for a while, but this is one of those bottles that doesn't see much use from me...

I had covid and had complete synesthesia for months. When my pallet dropped out it was dramatic, and torturous. When it finally started spiking back, I used whiskey as one of the ways to re-teach myself how to taste something. It has been an awesome journey. Always love your tasting notes for anything I have tried, you guys are a blast. Still to this day it is like covid has deleted parts of my pallet, but they randomly come back the longer it has been. It was nuts to hear you guys say that. :D

That's one of the most diabolically maddening things about that little nasty. I lost taste and smell for a couple weeks when I had it back in 2020, but my taste buds are still buggered up! Having to retrain the nose and the palate gets annoying. I got a bottle of Glenmorangie 12 for my sister's birthday (we give other people gifts on our birthday) and it took me forever to pull anything but spice out of the taste.

It would be interesting to have a list of whiskeys that drink AT their proof... if something comes across as "softer" or "harsher" than, say, 107 proof, it would stand to reason there are whiskeys that taste like they're exactly the proof they're cut to. It'd be neat to know what your list of "Representative Proof Whiskeys" is!

I was at a hotel bar looking for a decent drink. The best whiskey they had was a bottle of Henry McKenna with spout three inches left in the bottom. It was sitting on the wall with a pour spout in it. I asked the bartender how long it has been like that. She replied that it was the same bottle that had been there the entire two years she had been working the bar and that the pour spout had been in it the entire time. It was awful. It was disgusting colored water. The rest of the bottle got dumped.

I thought I would like Connemara more than I did. It was a weird combination of Peat smoke with sweet Irish whiskey, I just couldn't get behind that at $40 a bottle. I'd much rather spend 50 for some Ardbeg Wee Beastie. If someone was to make a bourbon with smokey tones, like a sweet rib that had been smoked and get the right combination it would be amazing

Lost 90% of my sense of taste a couple of months back. The taste of sweet left me entirely but acids like citrus and vinegar we very clear. My lovely peated Islays tasted like so much dirty ash.
