In the end Maddon wins, because it's already the 9th inning so getting tossed doesn't mean much and he gave Aroldis Chapman plenty of time to warm up by yelling at Joe West.

Opinions vary on Cowboy Joe West. In the same season that a lot of players voted him one of the 5 worst umps in the league, a different player poll rating the best had him in the top five. The main complaint about West is not his calls or consistency, it's about his short hook and the manner in which he treats players and situations. He's extremely old school and believes in absolutes when it comes to rules. The rules say you can't argue balls and strikes, then you can't argue balls and strikes or he runs you with a quick trigger. There was a day when nearly all the umpires were like Cowboy Joe, far more matter of fact and less likely to take any guff. Men willing when necessary to go nose to nose with Managers like Earl Weaver, Lou Piniella and Tommy Lasorda. Men like Doug Harvey, Harry Wendlesteadt, Ken Kaiser, John Shulock, Ron Luciano, Nestor Chylak, Jerry Neudecker, Marty Springstead and the late John McSherry. Still, each and every one of those men had their detractors. It's the nature of the game. Technically, he is rated one of the better umpires in the game. How else can you explain that, over the past 10 years, he has been assigned to work 3 World Series, 2 League Championship Series, 5 Division Championship Series, 2 Wild Card Games, 1 All Star Game and the World Baseball Championship. Seniority alone doesn't get you that kind of work. Cowboy Joe West is 65 years old. He will likely hang up his chest protector in the near future. But as someone as old school as he is (I saw my first professional game in 1963), I can appreciate him for what he is and not expect him to be anything else.

Here is my analysis of what happened: Umpires are trying to crack down on managers who walk to the mound in ways that can hamper the speed of the game. They want to get that game going as fast as possible. Now they are placing warnings, and in some cases, ejections, on managers who... 1. Walk very slowly towards the mound too much or too frequently in too short a period of time. 2. Walk very slowly towards the mound and go past the 15-second rule to display the hand signal for the relief pitcher to come in. 3. Signals the players for a conference for purposes not usually related to the pitcher at all, such as making a conference to the mound involving the infielders and the pitcher, to discuss non-pitcher defensive strategy. Especially if these conferences are held more than one or two times in very short succession. All of these actions are called stalling, which is a new prohibition especially in Major League Baseball. A manager who is caught stalling will be given a warning not to do it again. A manager who dissents at the umpire after being told not to stall again will be ejected. Also.... A manager who continues this offense shall also be automatically ejected from the game. But there is an exception - the manager who is ejected from the game can make the final pitching change for the relief pitcher before he has to go to the showers to sit out the rest of the game - if he is already ejected.

I don't see why people are so mad about this. He simple told the players to break it up because players aren't allowed to have meeting with each other and he simply told Maddon that he'll charge him with a visit if he's telling his players to meet with each other which is what the rule is and then Maddon got pissed and after arguing is when he got tossed. I don't see a problem with anything Joe West did. He is a terrible umpire tho. Haha
@Kartracer6
@Kartracer6 8 жыл бұрын
it's because it's in the spirit of the game. Also I believe Joe was changing pitchers anyway so they can do a meeting. Either way the game was just a bit over 2 hours if I remember and he had no reason to hurry up the game. The guy had a no hitter going and blew it in the 9th it's not uncommon for players to meet. Sadly there was a huge moment going in the game and West didn't like that all the attention wasn't on him and made the game all about him.
@TheUmpireStrikesBack
@TheUmpireStrikesBack 8 жыл бұрын
"If you knew baseball" says the guy that clearly doesn't know baseball. The mound visit rule says that if an umpire feels the players are being told to visit the mound by the manager, the umpire has the right to charge the manager with a visit. It seems to me that's what the umpire was telling him when he decided to argue about it. At that point just say okay and make your change. Why argue and get kicked out when it's in the rule book?? Also he could've rewarded the next batter with a "ball" if he wanted to penalize the pitcher for delay of game

Rhinosaur, One of the responsibilities of the umpire-in-chief is to keep the game moving. Players are not permitted to have meetings on the mound whenever they wish. It's called game management. You may dislike Joe West but he was completely right to break up the meeting.

Kartracer6, I'm not a big fan of Joe West either. I'm just saying that it is normal for an umpire to keep the game moving and the Cubs were trying to buy time. Why in the world would infielders be discussing a pitching change anyway? Joe was right in breaking up the meeting. No umpire would allow a meeting on the mound for the purpose of giving the substitute pitcher more time to warm up.

West does the right thing here. If you have never managed a game before, at any level, there is a certain gamesmanship between umpires and managers. This is textbook for the following reasons. Stalling is technically against the rules. West has to call it as it was pretty obvious what Joe was doing. But, he knows Chapman has to get loose and allows Joe to argue with him for a few minutes, letting Joe get what he wanted out of the deal, while still calling him out for technically stalling. I say kudos all around.

What people fail to realize is that Joe West is actually the God guy in all of this, and did the cubs a big favour. Here is why. Maddon told his players to go to the mound, which everyone saw. If Joe let the meeting happen it counts as a mound visit, which is a big deal. Joe would have got in trouble if he let the meeting happen and not charged the cubs a mound visit. Instead he tell them to bugger off, because if they don't it's a mound visit. The reason it's a big deal is because you are not allowed to have two mound visits in the same batter. Changing the pitcher requires a mound visit, unless it's for an injury. Now obviously Maddon wanted to take his pitcher out before facing the next batter (which at this point is the current batter up). If Joe let the meeting happen, he would HAVE to charge the cubs a visit. Then when Maddon went to change pitcher, he couldn't let him do it and then would have had to eject him anyways if he went out to the mound. So when maddon came out, he let Maddon argue long enough for the closer to finish warming up, threw him out and let him make the pitching change. He was really being the good guy, most people just don't see it.

Adam LeBlanc that's all true except it doesn't count as a mound visit if it's just the players talking if the manager also comes out to talk then it is a mound visit... however with just the players talking, you can do that as many times as you want. Joe west was trying to speed the game along since it was already the 9th. Maddon wanted more time to have chappie warm up. and BTW you are allowed two visits per inning not per batter once you make a second visit at anytime in the inning then you must take the pitcher out
@alexchavez777
@alexchavez777 7 жыл бұрын
the rule specifically says (and it's posted above) that a manager can't circumvent the visit rule by telling his players to go talk to the pitcher. why do people say something is wrong when they have no idea about the actual baseball rule?
@georgecoulson2948
@georgecoulson2948 7 жыл бұрын
Alan Hess that's not explaining a trip by a player though only a coach I know the rule very well two trips in one inning by a coach or manager is absolutely the end of the pitchers night, however, players are allowed as many visits to the same pitcher in the same inning should the umpire grant time for this to happen. I have visited pitchers, as a catcher, numerous times an inning without him being taken out, the rule applies to coaches visiting
@alanhess9306

A mound visit is defined as a conference by the coach or manager. A meeting by players without the coach is not counted as a visit and the umpire will not allow it. I posted the rule that proves you wrong. It says "A second trip to the SAME PITCHER in the same inning will cause this pitcher’s automatic removal from the game" Is there something wrong with your reading comprehension?
@georgecoulson2948

Alan Hess the umpire allows catchers to visit the pitcher all the time... I do it. and I've visited a pitcher as a player more than twice in an inning without any resulting consequences. I know that you can't as a coach but obviously umps don't mind players doing it... Cuz I've done it

I mean, c'mon...in general you don't fuck with an umpire, but especially JOE WEST???? Maddon, like EVERY player and manager/coach in the major leagues already know that you can't even look at Joe West funny, let alone fuck with him or you're asking for it. Nobody messes with Big Daddy Joe! In becoming a major league umpire, West set two records that still stand to this day. First, he was the youngest person ever to become a major league umpire AND he was promoted to the majors in the least amount of time, about 18 months from the time he umpired his first Rookie A League game in the minors to when he was called up to the majors. No matter what you think of him, that's impressive to be calling Rookie ball and within a few months you're umpiring double A and then triple A a few months later, then up to the majors a few months after that. He had to be doing something right.

They were stalling and West knew it. He DID NOT toss Madden for stalling. He tossed him because he probably said choice words to him as he headed out to the mound. Look at Hendricks 1:01 - he is smiling because the infielders came over and told him what was happening. Too many teams do this bullshit and it drags a game through the mud - sometimes I cannot even watch it. I credit West for having the balls to call them on it. He has more than some people on here commenting.

It's a mound meeting though. It's perfectly legal by rule. I don't credit West one bit since he actually had no right to do it. I understand mound meetings slow the game down, but the rule allows for one. Also It was a no-hitter till this point and Cubs had yet to even make a pitching change. Typically games like this are shorter than an average game, so it wasn't like they had been out there for an extended time where West had a reason to not want anymore stoppages.
@alanhess9306
@alanhess9306 6 жыл бұрын
Kartkid024, No, that is not a mound visit. Mound visits, by definition, are conducted by coaches or managers, not players. West was correct in breaking up a meeting between players with no manager present. You don't know the rules and you are not nearly as smart as you think you are.
@Kartkid024
@Kartkid024 6 жыл бұрын
Negative, Pitchers and Catchers can have mound visits too. Happens all the time and in basically every game. I have to question if you have ever watched the game if you don't know that. Individual fielders can have mound visits too. Seen that plenty of times too. 99.9 percent of umpires will never make the Call West did here.

@@Kartkid024 You are still an idiot after 4 years. The rules DO NOT allow player to congregate and stall. West told them to break it up and the players must comply. You having watched many ball games in no way makes you knowledgeable of the rules. You probably learn the rules from idiot announcers who also don't know the rules. Until you umpire a couple of hundred games you will not realize how little you know about baseball.
