This arrangement was a cornerstone of the e/music industry in the 80s. PERIOD! Far be it for me to endeavor to speak the technical language, but the minor "coloring" with other elements innundated your senses with shades of light, shadows, odors and aromas, fear, hopelessness, lust, et al in ways that the video could NEVER approach! Don't try to correct perfection! That keyboardist NAILED IT, and this cover captures the original note for note! Would love to see a time lapse fade of all instruments played in real.....wait...txt me and I'll try to record it for you, as a thank you gesture!

Agree...those strings are to die for. PSB of the 80s is my favorite band of all time. Their great skill along with great producers created a dream of music and remixes and B-sides in the 80s. If anyone could let me know what the Emulator II string patch they used, that will be great. It seems to have high attack and release times...

What's particularly good about this is not just the accuracy of the sounds.. but your mixing. It sounds right in line with a classic SSL 9000 mix, with the right amount of buss compression. Plus the verb and gating on the drums is just spot on. Nicely done.

Thanks Paul. That's the point that the EII strings come in. The JX-10 is already playing a soft synth pad / electric piano sound and I guess its just one of those happing mixing moments when two sounds just seem to gel perfectly.

Nice cover :) Just an little bit of info, to get the EXACT string sound you need a PPG Wave (2.2?), an accompanying Waveterm with the sample library and put it though an eventide harmonizer. It's always thought that the strings were EII but it was confirmed on the SOS forums (by someone who worked on the record) that it actually wasn't (I believe Chris had quite a large library of sounds for the Waveterm).

it wasn't. Interviews with Stephen Hague (Sound on Sound) confirm it. Also the album notes almost always credit a Fairlight operator on the tracks where it was used. Opportunities was JJ Jeczalic (Art of Noise, (a number of trevor horn tracks) and is a Fairlight owner), and Hague said Suburbia was also Fairlight.

@Grafiek, not sure what you mean by 'recorded on'. The Fairlight at the time was the Series II. This only had KB's per channel card for sampling - direct to disk came with the Series III in '86/87. The sounds themselves are from the Emulators (I and II) with drums from an Oberheim DMX.
