Defence Secretary Grant Shapps says he went to Ukraine earlier this year and made the point that "by delaying what we should be doing... we are running the risk of doing exactly what President Zelenskyy is concerned about".
He then accuses autocratic countries of trying to impose its systems on "free and democratic countries", and declares: "We have to stand up to that."

Yep, utter clown show. This is a naked attempt to maintain American hegemony, with Britain playing the loyal vassal. At the beginning of the discussion on Ukraine a statement by Volodymyr Zelenskyy prompts Trevor Phillips to ask Grant Shapps are we creating a stalemate in which tens of thousands of people are dying needlessly? Grant Shapps responded ″... we are in an existential battle‶. Wow. But didn't the war in Ukraine start because Russia viewed the positioning of nuclear weapons in Ukraine by NATO as an existential threat and therefore insisted that Ukraine must not become a member of NATO. A serious analysis of events going back to 2014 and earlier shows that the Americans orchestrated the war. At that time (barring a nuclear mishap) the West did not think Russia posed an existential threat to the West. How things have changed now that Russia has gained the upper hand. Barring a nuclear conflict or a full-scale American commitment to Ukraine by sending in the American military the fate of Ukraine looked settled as early as October 2023. Thus from a Ukrainian perspective tens of thousands of soldiers have been killed needlessly since then. In fact, thousands of people have been needlessly killed since 2014, when the Ukrainian Army and the Donbass militias first went to war. Mr Schapps is swift to commend the democratic credentials of the West while intimating Russia is autocratic and undemocratic. A more honest analysis shows that the rule-based order of the West gives itself the flexibility to change the rules to suit its own purpose and that the Americans exerts a non-democratic influence on their weaker allies. Russia has laws and holds elections. The West has been keen to ridicule Putin's recent electoral success but independent Western polling shows that the result faithfully reflected the sentiment of the electorate. More alarmingly Mr Schapps suggests that Western aid will reverse the military situation in Ukraine. It will not. Russia has astounded the West in its ability to produce arms and ammunition in ever increasing quantities. The West cannot compete and has largely depleted its own arsenals in trying to do so. Mr. Schapps must know this. The Russians have been advancing on the battle field since October 2023 and show no signs of stopping. The truth is that while the West gets weaker the Russians get stronger. The Western media has been very adept in presenting its case, hence the apparent support Mr Schapps says he receives but that would soon change if the public were better informed. The Russians did not pose a serious military threat to the West prior to hostilities in Ukraine. Nevertheless the West's refusal to respect Russian security concerns has taken us down the present path. Conscription in Britain is now being talked about, a suggestion that our young people will not thank our political elites for. Mr Schapps talks about a wake up call to spur the West on to supply more arms to Ukraine but it's far too late for that. A decent person would be looking at ways to resolve the conflict quickly not seek to prolong it. Thanks to the colossal miscalculations of the West the spectre of of a nuclear war has loomed. Trevor Phillips also discusses the Russian-Chinese rapprochement. The war in Ukraine has pushed the Russians into the arms of the Chinese. We are the losers and will see our living standards fall as a result. One can slam Russia but Ukraine has much of the character the former, it is certainly not a shining beacon of democracy. The West has got itself into a dreadful mess and is looking to save face.
