Although I like the sleek design of Canary Wharf and Stratford I prefer stations like tower gateway in there old design, much more colourful and much more full of life. Tower gateway now isn’t sleek and modern nor is it really colourful, it’s like a half job or painting it all grey and leaving it at that

Another question: I'm intrigued by the location of the original Heron Quays station. I think it was probably located just north of the current station, where the road currently is between the building that houses the new Heron Quays station and the dock itself. Is that correct? If so, was the road there at the time? How did you get into the station? I think the distance between the old Heron Quays station and Canary Wharf DLR station must have been the shortest between two stations on the entire network, whereas now it looks like West India Quay is slightly closer to Canary Wharf.

+citytransportinfo Thanks very much. You can tell the station is a bit nearer to Canary Wharf but I'd probably need to see the journey in the opposite direction to know exactly where it was. Maybe there's more footage on the internet somewhere.

It was move just next to its original location. This was done to extend the plateform.

At 8:53 you can see something that looks a bit like the London Eye in the background but it must be something else. What is it? I also noticed it when I was on the DLR a few days ago when it was lit up red.

+Andy JS It probably is the London Eye. Its the wrong shape to be the Orbit at Stratford, and I cant think of anything else!

+dennis trident william oh and also, I filmed this over several weeks, whilst passing through the station - I did not spend too long on any one day as I needed to complete each journey before the Oyster PAYG journey time limit meant that I would be charged extra.

Why did they stop the Stratford service going all the way down to Lewisham?

+hakc97again It still does - in the morning rush hours! But I assume that DLR management feel that the frequency of trains to Bank is sufficient. Canary Wharf station offers extremely good interchange between trains to / from Stratford and trains to / from Lewisham. Trains open their doors on both sides and the simple cross platform interchange is fully accessible.

How is this "light" when it's bigger than tube and almost the same size as NR trains...?

) lighter weight (compared to 'heavy rail') so that bridges can be designed for lower mass / less heavy rolling stock (hence lower construction costs) and able to negotiate sharper curves shorter trains also mean that station platforms are shorter, hence cheaper to build (even if underground) often a design that is 'street compatible' - the first DLR trains (P86 and P89) were later sold to Essen in Germany and after adding a driver's cab plus adapting for overhead wire power supply (instead of third rail) they are used on routes that include sections of street tramway ... yes, roads shared with cars, lorries, cyclists, etc.

+Daniil Trokhimenko Not all routes can go to all destinations - there would be too many trains! Anyway, its easy enough to change trains enroute, as one only has to wait on the platform. The same applies to trains from Stratford - none of which go to either Bank or Tower Gateway. Instead passengers must change trains at either Poplar or Canary Wharf - both are easy cross platform interchanges / no steps required.

+Daniil Trokhimenko ah but the original routes were only Stratford - Island Gardens and Tower Gateway - Island Gardens. Trains never normally travelled directly between Stratford and Tower Gateway - passengers had to change at West India Quay.
