I was fortunate to be at Eden Gardens on this day.India won by three gr8 spinners, batting by Viswanath, a magician on flicks shorts..was darling of the crowd apart from 3 gr8 spinners...I was sitting at gallery seat close to boundary line..It is of immense pleasure to be on that day when we shouted in pleasure in the grd.

I distinctly remember this series. Being a Banglorean,I adored Gundappa Vishwanath. Who can forget the Chennai test match where GRV made the famous 97 Not out. I was studying 2nd P.U.C at the National College Basavanagudi. Most of wickets and fours we actually heard while cycling from Seshadripuram to Basavanagudi ,in those days just in less than 30 minutes. Incidentally,I watched the 1st Test match in Bangalore on all five days. We used to reach the Stadium early morning at 6am to get the best seats.

Admire Tiger Pataudi battling with one eye, no protection on head or arms or chest , facing world's fastest bowler Andy Roberts , getting hit in the face and still had the guts to come back to bat. In my teen age years he was a legend.

Very nostalgic. We had some unsung heroes like Kersen Ghavri and Eknath Solkar. While Ghavri saved the team many a time by his dogged batting lower down the order, Solkar was the hero who magnificently supported the spin-trio with many outstanding catches standing close to the crease.

standing in line trying to get in was the most amazing experience i had as a 14 years old then . Cricket at Eden Garden was a very serious matter indeed and the whole city came to a stand still where no one wanted to work all day and the smell of food that was cooking under the stand was unreal . I had oranges and tea and chanachur to start the day at the ground .I wish i could have those day back for a little bit lol . I always came out at the end to eat Fuchka in the maidan before going back to the hotel .

The very beginnings of the great West Indian team that followed soon after. Lloyds first series as captain, and Roberts,Greenidge and Richards' first series in the team. The summer after they toured Australia where Lillee and Thomson gave them a torrid time, and Lloyd got the idea of pace pace and more pace. No helmets, halcyon days !

Indeed @Neale Newton sir - Oz '75 planted the thought in Lloyd's mind. But it was after India chased down a world record beating 404 to beat a West Indies side with 3 spinners at Port of Spain in 1976 that the idea really took root - Lloyd never played a spinner in his side again!

The West Indies were not the feared side you claim in 1974. That didn't come until 1976 (following a drubbing by Australia in 1975) when they put Roberts, Holding, Garner and Croft together. The Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse as they were dubbed. When India faced THAT pace attack they surrendered the match rather than face them..

Thank you and look forward to videos of the master pertaining to the Ind - Eng 1976 series, especially the Bangalore Test that India won thanks to a superb 79 from him, the home New Zealand series of 1976,the home West Indies, Australia and Pakistan series of 1979, the home England series of 1982 and of course the Jubilee Test where he showed exemplary sportsmanship by recalling Bob Taylor. Venktaraghavan was the Indian captain in the previous test at Delhi but is the 12th man in this test, the only time such a thing happened in the history of test cricket. Vishy played one of the greatest innings ever. Towards the end the commentator praised Prasanna for the victory, but he went wicket less in 36 overs in this test. Madan Lal (63 runs and 5 wickets in 2 innings) made bigger contribution.

When you don't know any better, you adapt. It's like saying how did people drive cars without power steering in the 80s. You make do with what you have, that's how the human brain works.

Even today one can recall the sheer tension on 5th morning 😅 Match was so delicately balanced both India and WI could win. WI win would mean series gone 3-0 Pataudi bringing Chandra 'on' right at start of Day 5 (despite Chandra having leaked runs and looked off-colour previous day) was an inspired move.

Bombay test was the last test for Engineer too. He had a forgettable test. Dropped Lloyd who then scored a double century. With bat, Engineer made a pair.

Thank you for another great video. You are really amazing. Does any one recognize the voice of the commentator here? I used to listen to radio commentary regularly in 70s but can not recollect this voice - it is not Suresh Saraiya, not Narottam Puri, not Dicky Ratnagar, not any of the other voices I still remember.
