West Side Story (1961) Review || Oscar Madness #34

"Ben-Hur" was the first remake to win Best Picture, and the Joker is the only movie character to win an Acting award for TWO actors who portrayed him (Heath Ledger and Juaquin Phoenix). If "West Side Story" wins the award for Best Picture, it will be the only time the award was given to both the original AND its remake (which would be unfortunate, because I think it would give momentum to an already unfortunate trend in Hollywood of remaking classic movies; and we will see more and more classics being bastardized and wokized by Hollywood in the future. (Casablanca remake anyone?))

Don't forget Vito Corleone, an Oscar winning role for both Marlon Brando and Robert DeNiro.

@@markbayer1573 I caught that error shortly after posting this comment. Now there is third "two-Oscar role": Rita Moreno and Areana DeBose for playing Anita in "West Side Story"!

West Side Story is most certainly one of the better Best Picture winning musicals! The Academy Award Best Picture Winning category is endlessly fascinating and controversial! I for one much prefer An American In Paris than West Side Story, although I do really like the film. It just shows that everyone’s rankings will have their differences! I enjoyed hearing you talk about this 1960s classic! Tomorrow’s film is one of a kind! :)

Hell yesss! West Side Story is one of my favourite musicals of all time. The song "Maria" is in my opinion an absolute masterpiece. It was great hearing you talk about this movie DB!
