Civil wars and domestic conflicts which remain inside territorial borders are not governed by laws, treaties, or conventions regarding hostilities between adverse parties. As long as both belligerents or adverse parties wear identifying insignias or uniforms, there are no rules. Even if there were to be new laws or rules drafted and agreed upon by both parties, they would be decided in a court controlled by the prevailing party after the cessation of hostilities... making them essentially meaningless in the first place. what I don't understand about the movie is, first, they show the western forces to be a militia comprised of people opposing the current leadership of the country. Then the press crew travels to Washington DC and just before they reach DC, the Western Forces have multicam uniforms with helmets and ballistic vests, as for weapons, they have mortars, Javellins, assault rifles and light machine guns, when it comes to transportation, armoured equipment and aircraft, they have jets, attack helicopters, Humvees, tanks, APCs, IFVs and military trucks. So they went from being basically a militia with small arms and minimal personnal protection equipment to being a proffesional and heavilly equipped force.
@CordlessJet54916 күн бұрын
I don't think these guys in this scene are Western Forces.
@mtfalpha-1.62916 күн бұрын
@CordlessJet549 I would say they are, it' s abunch of guys equipped militia style. No uniforms, no helmets, not too many pouches without any support or any other units near. I don't know what else they would be.
@thomasgwynn984516 күн бұрын
We are never told who the militia here are and we know there are several factions in the 2nd Civil War beyond just the loyalist and western forces. Even if they are affiliated with the western forces, and this firefight takes place somewhere on the East Coast so to me it seems more likely they're local, the forces we see later are clearly more professional troops or at least better equipped and likely defected federal troops and the National Guard forces of the Western Forces states. This is not mutually exclusive. There can be both professional well equipped forces and militia forces on a single side. If anything I think that is extremely likely in the world this movie takes place in.
@thomasgwynn984516 күн бұрын
Any of the myriad militias that would spring up in a fractured warzone of a country. Jesse Plemons character falls into the same boat. He certainly seems like he would be the complete opposite of the snipers with Pride flags and painted fingernails yet he is clearly not part of the professional loyalist forces. The civil war depicted here is not the same as the first Civil War with primarily uniformed armies fighting each other.

Point of the movie is that the US military is in its last stages of mobilization and probably isn't doing the necessary training to keep its NCOs, officers, and junior enlisted winning tactically or strategically. Nevermind the fact that the USA is split into 3 or 4 nations at this point in the story and much of the National Guard, Reserves, local Marine/Navy, and Coast Guard forces would saddle up with whatever nation they were local to or otherwise be purged.

Months after watching this, my conclusion on this movie is that it wanted to pull people in with some "realism" (see the wonderful sound design, attention to detail, real equipment, etc.) and then sell them something pretty good, how horrible a civil war would be. All of that is great, and I think its neat to show the POV of war journalists. The issue is that it feels like there's some sort of political message behind it all. I really have no idea which way that message is leaning or what it is, all I know is its there, its conveyed through scenes like this and the journalists, and its really poisoning the movie.
@campbell982515 күн бұрын

One thing I will say about this movie that stood out to me was the sound, sitting in the cinema watching this scene the gunfire was deafening as it should be, might be a controversial opinion but next to Heat I’d say it’s one of the best aural depictions of gunfire I’ve seen in a long time though if they had of used live blanks it could have been even better

@ that’s reality. Our troops are about the most civilized on the planet, and even they do some FUCKED up shit. I’ve heard a lot of pretty disturbing stories from combat vets. That is why it’s so critical for good men to stand up and fight. Any able-bodied, sane, sober, moral man ought to keep and maintain a rifle and handgun, and train with them regularly. Lots of evil out there; good men need to be ready always.

Am I the only one annoyed that these guys are not wearing any type of helmets in a wartime environment? Armies learned that head protection was necessary against shrapnel in World War One. Even if all you have is one of those surplus store metal helmets that probably date back to Vietnam or later it would be at least something.

Our actually civil war wasn't even this brutal against captured soldiers. From every clip I see soldiers from both sides just straight up shoot surrendering/wounded troops. Our civil war troops were captured and help on a "bail" status where if they were captured again they would be shot. It was more of an honor system.

@ianloughney9570Күн бұрын
Those aren't Western Forces soldiers in the movie. This scene is a reference to the boogaloo boys, loosely organized civilian militias. The director is trying to make a point with this scene about the brutality and danger of non-professional and insurgent forces amassing power during conventional conflicts.
