I suppose it depends on which side of the civil war the Australians supported. For a real life example, look up Arthur Fremantle on Wikipedia. He was a British officer who came to the US during the real civil war and was put up by the Confederates, many of whom hoped the Brits would join the war on their side. He might not have been so well received by a foot soldier in the North who might have been worried about the same thing.

In the movie lore, FL is a rebelling state as part of the Florida Alliance, whereas MO and CO are loyalist states aligned with the president. He's asking what the alignment of their home state is, because he likely intends to kill anyone who is not from a loyalist state. People not from any state aren't seen as people and killed immediately. Pretty common thing that goes on in civil wars.

If this movie took itself the least bit seriously and tried to correlate it to what the current political climate and fear in America and the West is, this really could have been something intriguing

misunderstood the point of it, it's a message of showing the violence at the end point of extreme polarization. They even made it follow the story of some journalists, which war journalist's entire job is capturing that violence for the people who don't have to experience it (not to make points on policy decisions), like what the movie is doing for us. We feel when we watch isis or the battle of baghdad that something like that can never happen here, yet the past decade we have become so polarized that a simple election now needs to be "prepared for" with businesses boarding up. The University of Texas at San Antonio just had a PhD student jump off their campus parking garage roof over an election for a political office 1,600 miles away. Why do you think they teamed Texas and California together? Or not make any references to conservatives, liberals, democrats, or republicans? This movie isn't yet another entry to the countless polarizing media us Americans consume. This is to show us that this will stop in two ways, with one being that same level of violence we think is impossible to happen in the US. This isn't about supporting a side so we can further demonize the other, but to tell both sides we kinda need to see each other as human. Lee even further says "Every time I survived a war zone, and got the photo, I thought I was sending a warning home. 'Don't do this.' But here we are." Yet here we are in this comment section, analyzing this to try and make political messages so we can take sides, so we can say "well what kind of American are you"

@@worldofdoom995 no it wouldn’t. The divineness in this country is as bad as it’s been since the civil war. If they made something actually realistic and close to something believable it could have been something realistic and that’s what makes it scary

@@CatFungi sorry but I just thought the movie got a lil too absurd and could have stayed closer to reality we could actually actually believe it

That would've become a story about one or another ideology, and that would've been a slippery, risky step. The story is about journalism related to a moment of crisis and to violence; not mentioning how it started and which the sides fighting are, makes the point of view neutral and more focused on the real point. It's up to us figure out how all that is connected to our actual political reality.

05:22 classic vehicle/plane/ship from out of nowhere - *scriptwriter teleport:* no one sees or hears him, despite the fact that he is rushing at full speed by dirt road and it is not a sedan, but he will be seen and heard only a few meters away from him, when he teleports... Why? Because it has to be done according to the plot, otherwise, the real "correct" or "incorrect" americans (it doesn't matter who, even russians, jews or chinese...) would have heard and seen him in advance, left the line of way and shot the car 🤦🏻♂
