The power of steam is absolutely incredible. Watching a single steam locomotive do the work of several modern diesel electrics is one awesome sight. The 1309 puts out a maximum of 79,773 lbs tractive effort. A modern CSX ES44ACH puts out 200,000 lbs tractive effort, and 120,000 lbs dynamic braking force. A single ES44ACH would have totally stalled the 1309 in dynamic brake mode alone.
@aaron-prime1173 ай бұрын
@@markantony3875 that may be so, but that also depends how heavy of a load the locomotive is pulling. Today’s modern diesels are always latched mostly with two or three units maybe even four for extra power. But back in the day locomotives like these pulled load single-handedly or double heading every day, pushing the tract of effort to the max every week with every load of cargo, they hold on their respective divisions. But also 1309 was made of sterner stuff back in her day and even if 1309 were to be put on a strength test with that kind of diesel. Maybe on full throttle even with the dynamic brakes applied she might have a chance.
@markantony38753 ай бұрын
@@aaron-prime117 Multiple units today because trains are so much heavier. Back in the steam days, the typical train was only 3,000 to 4,000 tons. The N&W often needed a combination on 3 Class Ys and a leading Class A just to move a 12,000 ton coal train on its main from the WVA mines to port. Today, over the same route they assign only two AC drive locomotives to move 18,000 ton trains. On CSX Cranberry Grade in WVA one new ES44ACH has triple the tonnage rating of a B&O 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone EM-1.

Should have borrowed a CSX ES44AC for the stress test. At over 120,000 lbs dynamic braking force (vs 60,000 lbs for the SD40), it would have worked the 1309 real hard.
