I'm so glad to see you feel the same way about it as I do. It warms my hear while breaking it at the same time. That final shot of them standing in the wedding line, as Ito removes his hat and bows his head with that score rising in the background brings me to tears every time. As you said, one of the great films of any genre. GAlso, geat to curl aup and re-visit at this time of year. "Smokin' okums, what are ya waitin' for?" Thanks for watchng and Happy Holidays! @@STEVEHAYESTOQ yes. My favourite western is The Searchers but WW is for me up there with it in the way it mixes drama and humour, makes you feel good then has you on the edge of your seat. I've only seen it once (sadly here in the UK we don't get the old films broadcast regularly the way they used to when I grew up in the 60-80s developing my love of old cinema) but it has remained with me. Keep up the good work.

I remember when I was a kid in the early 70s on late Friday night (CBS I think) they did movies. Since no school next day we could stay up and watch late TV. Remember they showed a lot of Elvis and Jerry Lewis flicks and what my brother and I called "Roman movies". Anyway, Westward the Women came on often and it was one of my favorites. Haven't seen it in years. Thanks for reminding me of this gem and bringing back a lot of nostalgia for those days when we only had 4 channels. (How did we survive?!)

I bet I’ve seen this classic 50 times and it’s never gotten stale. “To the West! to the West! where the rivers that flow…”. To The West, the song heard at the end of the film, was not written for the film. It’s a song written in the mid 1800s (music by Henry Russell & lyrics by Charles Mackay) that those settlers actually sang on the trails during the westward expansion. Someone at MGM really did their homework choosing that song.

Two more great oldies, Steve: Young John Wayne's "Shepherd of the Hills" and YOUNGER John Wayne's "The Big Trail." The latter was a VERY early John Wayne--1930!--he's just a BOY! It is so early that it includes shades of vaudeville in the characters and the script. Part was so ruined that it's been subtitled. I bet you know this, but years ago, I read (or was told) that John Wayne and a friend were leaving the studio one day, and passed a heaping garbage bin full of a bunch of old movies...a number of which were his. They collected them, and this is the only reason we HAVE some of those movies. This is second/third hand info? so...? It's a great story, and I didn't make it up; so I'm holding on to it! ;)

Bless you, darling Steve-a-roo for doing one of my all time faves, should be a better known film - WESTWARD THE WOMEN. 'Whitman's Valley" the destination of the brides is of course...Kanab, Utah - now the home of BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SANCTUARY, making it is doubly dear to many hearts. I saw this movie beaucoup years ago when I was a teen -- and have loved it all my life. Each little vignette is fully developed and fleshed out: the saloon gals who want to start new lives in California, the unwed mom, the widows (Italian and New England). Some real drama, touching vignettes (the little dog has a nice role as well) and all told - a truly unusual take on what could easily have been your basic Western: wagons-ho shoot 'em up.

I've been wanting to see this film since your recommendation and I, finally, got to see it this weekend. It was marvelous. There wasn't a dull moment in the entire two hours! Those women left me with a lot of food for thought regarding how far one would have to go, the grit and courage that one would have to have and the extreme sacrifices that one would have to make in order to make major life changes for the better. I loved the women (Hope Emerson was a joy!) and, in my opinion, Robert Taylor was never better. I'm not a fan, but he was perfect in this role. Thanks for bringing this film to the forefront. I love westerns with my favorite being "Stagecoach," but I think that I've found a new fave.

Oh, I'm so thriled that you loved it so much! I always have. It's been my favorite western since I was kid and first saw it on NBC Saturday Night at the movies. I love Hope too,. Also think Taylor was never better and think everyone had wonderful moments and were simply amazing. Between the two of us, every time< at the very end, when all the couples are finally paired up, lined up to be married and ITO removes his hat, bows his head and the chrous begins singing "To The West", I burst into tears! May I recommend another? Look for "Canyon Passage" . It's a Technicolor wesern from 1946 with Dana Andrews, Susan Hayward , Brian Donlevey, Andy Devine and Hoagie Carmichael who sings "Old Buttermilk Sky". It's about the settling of Oregon. I think you'll love it! Thanks so much for watching! Saty well, be happy and stay SAFE! Best; Steve

Really exciting western with a twist. A western with women in most of the leads. At last the gals get a chance swear, get dirty, sling a gun and raise a sweat. Great story with lots of passion, shows up on TCM now and then. Good pic Steve.

Steve, you and your viewers might interested in reading "On Location with Billy Wellman", one of the autobiographical essays by Louise Brooks in her book "Lulu in Hollywood". Wellman directed Louise in "Beggars of Life" in 1928 and then a few years later offered her a role in "The Public Enemy" which she declined and the role then went to Jean Harlow. Imagine Louise Brooks in the role that went to Harlow. That would have been something and might have led to a longer film career for Louise.

Steve!? How could you not mention the eyebrow raising, shocking and hilarious final few seconds of this movie? I know you wouldn't want to give it away, but really! How they got it past the code is still beyond me. And to you readers...don't fast forward to the end because the final shot is the perfect cap to everything that went before it. If you think that, "Nobody's perfect!" was the best ending line in all of film, then this final shot is the best final sight gag ever.
