i spent 17 yrs near cocoa beach myself, and the only thing i can think of is that the way the air and water was forced so much between the mountains was the major puzzle peice. florida doesnt have that so it kinda all gets pummeled evenly, this was like on steroids cause it had cliffs to guide and enhance it. sucks man.
@holleighlordel15752 ай бұрын
Don’t forget it wasn’t *just* the hurricane that caused this. It torrentially rained there for a few days before Helene hit. The rivers were already above flood stage. Then came Helene with tropical moist air rising up the mountains, condensing and dropping a bazillion more inches of rain onto the saturated ground. The earth could not contain all that water causing many landslides filled with boulders trees etc that just scoured away everything in its path. It’s truly hard to fathom the power of water.

People still not telling the whole truth. I have a friend that joined a search group. They were in buncomb county. They have a list of the missing that they gave to go down and call and confirm whos been found and still missing. They walk areas and when they smell death they call over a cadaver dog that pinpoints. Then they take turns digging by hand. As they go down they see maggots here in there but after lots of energy and digging so deep they can’t get to anything. Just to deep. 25’ deep sand and debris or more sometimes. It’s gonna be another 911 with bodies never found. Two other things they noted the Governor or someone went on tv just this week and gave some small number of dead. The people I know searching are pissed. They have way more missing than the stats they dropped on tv. Also noted it’s all volunteers and donations everywhere they go. There were no fema or government people out walking rivers and hand digging. The military they did run into were in clean clothes sitting round there trucks. They were nice but told them they could do nothing without orders which apparently are specific and didn’t include helping them in search or recovery. They are also extremely strict on where they let people go. Arresting people in places. Tons of areas needing searched but they just don’t let volunteers go and going but no one else is doing it either. They will be finding bodies for many years as the winters come and go and spring melts wash sand and debris away every year. Bones discovery will pop up in the news probably rest of our lives. One man was washed from green mountain nc into Erwin Tennessee over I think 100-200 miles away with his wife’s body never found. Just to tell you how extreme the water was and how far away people might be.

It is a hard reality after these things. Towns that are washed away and towns that will not have water or sewer for years. The rivers and streams will recover but that takes time. Streams with no overhanging trees heat up too much for some fish to thrive. Trails washed out take time and work to fix. And the big question is can these folks hold on long enough for things to settle to a new normal because the old normal is gone forever. It may come back and rhyme but it will not be exactly the same. If they rebuild they should check with lidar maps and experts about how high and where to rebuild. Just looking at the land is not good enough after this. Lidar will give a good idea of what is safe and what is not. Many will have to leave for now to earn a living. But most will have a dream of coming back and some will. Been there, done that myself. It will be hard times for a while but the saying is what does not kill you makes you stronger. Let's pray that holds for these survivors. Good luck people. You will need it.

Same way with the beach, you live to close to water this is the outcome, I can say this, I have lost my home 3 times from hurricanes after hurricane, I finally had enough! As much as I love the ocean and rivers I had to get somewhere high and dry, so from North Carolina a small town called Chinquapin, we moved 900 miles due west to Missouri, a town called Fredericktown, Madison county. God is Alway's Good. Amen.❤

Her business is in Mitchell County not Yancey. Yancey county where the Toe River took homes down. Please update the area.

i think it says mitchell county on the banner, im not sure what they need to update. regardless, there is unimaginable damage in every county up there, the damage is hard to avoid when you get close to any water way. i live right in between mitchell and yancey. the toe river, the cane river are like you describe. houses wiped out

Christy you are a amazing woman I watched your other video when the storm first happened I was amazed how you just kicked in to go out and help everyone and you cared for all your neighbors ❤You are a angel 😇 I hope in the future you will get to sit on a porch and just watch the water and get to finnially relax ❤

The devastation in th e mountains of NC, SC, and GA is like nothing we have seen before. Who knew a hurricane could hit the mountains? My heart breaks for the people who live in this area. I have a cousin who lives in Black Mountain, but luckily they were able to get her out. It's awful that so many are still missing and may be dead. Blessings on the people on the ground still trying to help!

The ugliness breaks my heart. I feel the same way. All the beautiful places I have gone to find peace here. Gone.

In my experience after our small town got wiped in Florida it takes about 2 years to return to closer to normal, not entirely rebuilt & never the same.

Friendly reminder that beaches, swamps, and indeed mountain river valleys will involve water.

Let's talk about the people with children,having to face DHS and worried about them becoming a ward of the state. They quit allowing supplies and now they want to take their children because they are getting no help from the government. God help them..

Can you imagine the government buying this land and finding oil??😮 That isn't too far stretched considering the days we are in.

No one has even mentioned that the vast amount of median to luxury rental cabins that are destroyed and the owners had no flood insurance because they weren't in a flood zone. It was like a 1% chance of a flood. 😢😢 I have so many fond memories of renting weekly cabins in NC, SC and TN.

It's already cold up there. And this was their big tourism season and a lot of businesses and employment and money has been lost. It just adds to the grief of the family members gone. Then the main hwy is wrecked. We drove that route every fall to see the leaves and go camping. Tragic.
