What a beast ! I’m so happy to see that you handled it with so much respect and actually got the hook out ! A ray that big can be very intimidating to handle like this. Well done.

I had one on of similar size off of that pier before it was renovated - must have been back in 2000 - 2001. Had quite a crowd gathered. Got it into about 20 m from the pier and the hook straightened, it was a 3/0 from memory in a whole pilchard. decided to target the ray one day when we got fed up being snapped off on lighter tackle. You know when the rays are around 'cause the rest of the fish go off the bite. Same thing when a seal decides to come snooping around.

Best thing about this was the care you took for that fish,, and letting him/her back safely. I dont think theres any need to keep any fish unless your starving. I cringe and feel sad when i see people killing fish, especially one that big. Think of the life that fish has had to get big. Because for me anyway the thrill of fishing is about trying to outwit them,, then the fight..

When the ray plants itself... twang the line like a guitar... the ray will quickly make a dash after this. Learnt it from someone who knows better than I do
Back in 84 at the Oceanside pier in Southern California, I caught a 150 pound ray on 40 pound test mono, and didn't have as much trouble as you guys did. Also when working around Rays, wear steel toed boots so you can step on the stinger. Any ways, good video. Oh, and it was tasty!

It's cool the city has mounted rod holders on some of the piers. You guys had guts to unhook him/her. I think most people would have cut the line.
@LandFishTV6 жыл бұрын
Not many piers have the rod holders but they can be handy! I would always much rather take the hook out than cut the line and leave it hanging off the fish.
@laughtoohard96556 жыл бұрын
The big thing for me is using hooks that are not stainless steel. If you know the hook will dissolve it's an easier solution in some situations. I don't think I would have tried to land that ray on a boat, but being on shore you had greater control.
@LandFishTV6 жыл бұрын
@@laughtoohard9655 yeah it would have been a dangerous ordeal doing it from a boat that's for sure.
@frank32006 жыл бұрын
I’d hate to be on the bad end of that tail when it did that big tail-whip at 5:50. A ray that size is definitely to be respected.
