Legally they are allowed to be returned to the place of origin. But due to political instability and turmoil it's usually agreed that the artefacts are safer kept and maintained at the British museum for the time being.

You know the Republic of Benin and Nigeria (Benin Kingdom) are different, right? The country of Benin has no connection to Benin City in modern Nigeria, nor to the Benin Bronzes. Benin kingdom may have included parts of the present-day Republic of Benin at some point, but the main area of the Benin Kingdom was in south-west Nigeria e.g. Benin city. That's where these were stolen from and that's where the Oba (King) resided. Many present-day countries took inspiration from the past kingdoms or empires. Before the present day Ghana was called Ghana, they took inspiration from The Ghana Empire ( c. 700 until c. 1240), properly known as Wagadou and present-day southeastern Mauritania and western Mali.

I am from Europe, and it breaks my heart every day to see what was done to the Ashanti kingdom and Benin kingdom! I cannot imagine how painful this would be for Nigerians, Ghanaians or other Western Africans. Robbers take by force, which was done here. They can also chose to kill and leave a trail of destruction, which was done here. They (robbers) refuse to return what they stole, again it is thieving. letloveguard wells They were kept in the palace for the same reason as European monarchs. For the pleasure of themselves and nobility and to make their palace look as pompous as possible. Of course they are important to nigerians. But that doesn't take away from the fact that they are way easier to steal there than in Britain. They should be returned of course but personally I would keep contacts ready to buy them from underworld if and when some get stolen.

Why is is do hard to believe Africa has history? Europe and Asia could be as easily dismissed if society had a high audience of prejudice against them, yet we just accept their cultures and history without questioning its authenticity. All of this research put into Africa dismissed by public for a variety of reasons, much is from prejudice. How long would it be before the world accepts Africa for its once glorious past?
