My dad, pulled up in his road train in South Australia (1990's), to help a guy having problems. The broken down truck was an old K100 Kenworth, probably done 2 or 3 million km's..........and the axle housing/banjo had cracked through, all the way around........oil was going everywhere and the driver was convinced "he could keep going". My dad told him to stay put, dont drive it, and he would give him a ride to the next town. Some people just dont understand, that some things when they are broken, are really BROKEN. For that banjo to be that bad, its probably got an awful lot of metal fatigue in it.............yikes. In the Tanami desert of Australia, the only way they could stop trailer axles snapping in half, was to let all the tyres down to 30psi and drive slow, rough roads just destroy things.

Good video. I’ve got a customer with a fleet of late model 389 peterbilt log trucks with the same air ride suspension. Constantly have rear end housings leak. I have never successfully fixed one leaking where the saddle meets the housing like that. Tried pre heating, tried stick, tried mig tried it all. Always cracks right beside my weld with in 10,000 miles. With that being said I am a mechanic and do not claim to be a welder. Just a mechanic with a welder.

I drove semi and six wheelers dump trucks for a very long time. I never owned my own truck but I’ve got 1000s and 1000s and 1000s of hours pushing trucks to they’re limits off road. One of The reason I was so liked by the guys that owned the trucks was I knew when the truck was right and I knew when it wasn’t. If I was owner I’d have your number on speed dial. You know you sh__ Warren. Thanks for another great video 👍

I had this very same issue last year on my rear-rear end. I'm a very good welder overhead or vertical but the only way to really get to the cracks was to pull the whole rear out from under the truck. Once I pulled it out, I also pulled my head out of my ass and realized it was only a couple more hours work to put another housing from the scrap yard back under the truck. It just worried me that there was metal fatigue in the housing and I would be doing the same large job again a few months down the line. I wish the truck owner would have spent the extra money and just changed the whole housing. Also, while doing this job I too pinched my hand between the back of the impact and the floor !!!!

A few years back headed home pulling my car trailer with my 55 Chevy loaded on it. I was almost to Denim Springs La and a bobtail Kenworth went flying by in the left lane, I saw a puff of of dust then his primary driveshaft came flying out. It was headed for my windshield with my family inside. I slammed on the brakes and it hit the pavement just under my front bumper bounced around under my pickup then took out my front trailer tire. The driver walked back and helped change the tire and told me he had just replaced the u-joints at a Kenworth shop before leaving Georgia. It was Sunday so he spent the night on the side of the road after we loaded him up with water and snacks. I had to buy another $150 tire when we got home but I’m grateful that shaft didn’t come thru my windshield.

I am curious if that is a spicer or rockwell diff for the reason that one of my trucks on the farm ( bought well used of course ! ) has spicer 46 heavy's and from what I understand the axle tubes are what is a thicker wall then the standard 46's. From the cracking taken place and a logging truck would be pounding on rough roads, overbuilt is better no doubt when it comes to axle housings.

Tip of the day. For cutting Zip ties flush no jagged edge so nice n flush . I use Yisige - multipurpose diagonal cutting pliers with flush cutters, they are used for car push retainers to pry rivet trim clips on inside door panels on cars and trucks. I use them for a lot of other stuff . Available on Amazon for 12.99. They work great. I have several pairs in my tool box and in my electrical equipment caddy etc.

Great job Warren. I sold Kenworth trucks for 20 years. The suspension on this Pete ( AG380 on a KW ) is a 38k suspension. The axles are probably rated at 40k. This is a Linehaul suspension and axles, not a Vocational/logging suspension and axles. It should be set up with a 46k suspension and axles. Perhaps the truck was set up for Linehaul application to it’s first owner. Then someone put that log bolster on it for the second owner. Oh well, it is what it is and you did a fine job of saving that axle housing for your customer. Love your videos.

Nice work. Only suggestion as a 20 year veteran in the steel business? I would still highly suggest (If you didn't already off camera) Drilling out holes at the ends of ALL the cracks to insure they never continue to run after the welding process. I've done this type of repair on things like Aluminum Oil Pans that most people will claim impossible to fix because of those same cracks eventually running after the welding process and almost always 99% of the time never had a call back because of the welds failing from crack repairs when i drill out the leads of the cracks before preping and welding up everything. And 100% success rate on steel cracks like this job. But, I've heard of those types of cracks continuing to run beyond the welds years later on down the line from not drilling out the ends of the cracks. Just a suggestion not trying to be a keyboard warrior. I also dyekem cracks on Aluminum for this reason because the cracks can run beyond what you can see and then drill at the end but, in my experience isn't necessary on steel or cast quite as much but, is something I still do on cast that's been painted just to be 100% sure since I've seen dyekem show cracks a little further out from the visible before the prep work.

Fixed a western star that threw a driveshaft and almost took the transmission out too. It broke all the way around the bell housing and the only things holding it in was the cooler lines and shift tower. May I suggest penetrating oil?? I am completely surprised why you don’t soak those bolts beforehand. If you did, I am in error and apologize. I have one thing from yourself and a couple of others that I watch and penetrating oil is used to make things easier. Quick question, if you were to pressurize the axle does it help to show cracks or ones that were repaired to validate the welds? Sounds like your camera magnet is first rate!

Thanks Warren for sharing the repairs. Would any of that crack detector dyes work on that kind of damage to the housing because of the seeping oils to see the extent and check after welding? Been getting a lot of scammers on other YT channels with WA # or winning something scams/phishing. I report them and turn off/hide the notification. I have read it is going to get worse as more of the economy tanks. BTW make sure you keep your old design Milwaukee impact, a new design was tried from HSA to HSB and it has been recalled taken back out of market. The original with the 3 sun planetary gears driving the impact is the workhorse unit. Do what you can with your warranty on your battery housings and impact. TTI now owns Milwaukee tools. Take care out there and glad you got some personal time to relax with some older movie programming. Been finding much more free stuff on YT with ads to watch lately.
