I also work with these pumps and some of the issues are determining if it’s the system commanding the high pressure or a stuck swash plate causing the issues. Just a comment about load sense, if you have no load sense then you have no pressure. So block the load sense line going to pump and pump should be in biased state or neutral. So if you still have high pressure you have a suspect pump. These pumps can cause fun problems with engine not running at idle or low power issues. I have even had engine reps scratch there heads trying to figure out engine issues and it’s the pumps. Good info you have shared good explanations. Merry Christmas.

Had a McCormick tractor stall the motor like that once. The dealership said it was the pump ,I looked at the pump and it was fine! They put on a new pump and did the same. The tractor belongs to the in laws so I had to go to the dealership to sort this out! A transmission solenoid was stuck when it would start it went into two gears and stall! Merry Christmas to you and your family Waren

Thanks for the hydraulic lesson. Sometimes it is tough to get hydraulics working correctly after changing out a pump. Dad had a JD 300 industrial tractor that had a hydraulic issue for years. turns out the issue was a valve on the loader. Once the valves were replaced, it had more than enough pressure. Merry Christmas to you and your family, and all the best for the new year!!

GREAT explanation of pump operation, thks!!
@forrestgump13795 жыл бұрын
My experience with the industrial versions of these pressure compensated axial piston pumps, a down stream relief is a must. Set higher than the compensating pressure it gives the fluid somewhere to go as the valves open and close and the pump stroke compensates. Fluid has inertia just like a large flywheel, so as you said when flow is at the full amount and a valve slams closed the pump will not de-stroke that fast and a tremendous pressure spike will occur. The relief will protect the system from these spikes.

Fascinating stuff young man because I have never seen or understood how these hydraulic systems work. I suppose with modern tractors most of them rely on hydraulics to control all the basic functions and are themselves controlled by computerised electronics so a modern tractor is basically a engined poweredmulti tasking hydraulic pump governed by electronics. Complicated stuff but not impossible to learn. Many thanks Warren for the insights and lessons you give on repairs and rebuilds. All the very best to you too for Chrismas and 2020!

Great video Warren !! I have a 6410 John Deere with the same pump system it’s been trouble free so far with 3400 hours. But just used in the hay operations. Hydraulics are amazing and what the engineers come up with can be a little confusing at times. I used to work in wood industries and the electrical controlling hydraulic could be very precise with linear position rods and 4 to 20 milliamperes drivers on valves. Merry Christmas to you and your family

The constant pressure system is more responsive and efficient than the constant flow system but I prefer the reliability of the constant flow (gear pump) system. If you read industrial history of Caterpillar and John Deere, these companies were known for simple but rugged equipment that would crank and run, few bells and whistles but good old simple.
@RJ1999x5 жыл бұрын
Might have been true in 1950
@jeffsnider35885 жыл бұрын
@@RJ1999x - Ha - You are exactly correct! Newer stuff is not simple, rugged, reliable or made in America.....all the attributes that made these companies great. I often wonder if a simple version (of course with all the safety decals and shields) of a tractor was produced how it would sell. I have a Allis-Chalmers WD45, it runs great but would not bring crap at a sale. It is tricycle and no power steering so I keep it and use it.

@jeffsnider35885 жыл бұрын
Did you realize the old WD45 by Allis-Chalmers was one of the 1st tractors with demand flow (pressure compensated) hydraulics, the pump is an inline piston pump run off cam lobes with roller-followers. No filter and dam thing has run for years with no problems on my tractor. At one time many farmers owned a WD-45, They were inexpensive and fulfilled the basic requirements. The pump does run at a rather slow speed though. Allis-Chalmers was another innovative company that had some really good designs. The D-19 diesel was the 1st turbocharged tractor.
@RJ1999x5 жыл бұрын
@@jeffsnider3588 The hydraulic system on a 45 was high pressure lo flow, which made it work very quickly and required a small cylinder.

Sir, so what I understood and learned. There is a 1st stage charge pump psi of aprox. 400 to main pump. Main pump is a variable flow piston type. Discharge from pump goes to vavle assembly. At valve assembly 1st valve is a type of relief that lets fluid return to pump or to what ever system is calling for psi/flow. Now returning to pump goes to a psi and a flow control valves that by design rotates a plate that cause the pistons of the pump to move more fluid at the max needed and the psi relief sets the max psi, with the only other variable being engine rpm. For flow out put. Now if for any reason fluid is not flowing or restricted it gets hot, cause damage.as well as other things cause problems. Stuck valves,bad motors,and pluged filters ETC.
