Two comments Warren, firstly how you make that look so easy - amazing skills and secondly, what a great life your dogs have.

Iam a welder employed 25 yrs at a machine shop, I do presswork as part of my job.. To the diyer I would say that presses are like welding machines, get as big a one as you can afford.. Know first that it is as easy to destroy as repair when it comes to presswork, so start with junk stuff. Alot of these skills cant be learned from books, but never hurts to have a book handy.

I had to replace a integral case on my zf5 4_2 manual 1991 with a 1995 zf5 4_7. I can't get it to shift into the gears when case is on .. I didn't take anything apart, or use other parts cause the trans was working when I swapped cases . The bearing race was all ready in the zf5 4_7, do you think that is the problem or something else detents ? Or could something have moved on me ? PLEASE HELP IF POSSIBLE

I have watched your video to rebuild my ZF6 you did a good job ----- but mine is tight when I torque it together,it says 17 lbs ,it turns but really hard ,I didn't see you check the clearance.?????? Thanks .

Hello sir your mechanical skills are impressive. My ZF 6 is having trouble going into reverse and low. To check the main shift detent do you just unbolt it and pull it out. That part wasn’t on your video. I saw the part and the hole where it resides but didn’t see you install it. I do not want something to fall into the trans like if I unbolted the reverse idler thank you for your time

Hey man great video I got mine together When I spin the input shaft the output shaft spins in neutral Try to hold it but Still spins what do you think

Hiya Warren, love the dogs hanging out keeping you company while you work in that other video , well is this zf6 basically the same as a zf5 that's in a 91 f450 ? or do you have a zf5 video floating around somewhere ? i figured since i'm rebuilding my 7.3 idi i might as well go through the 5 speed and make sure its right also, thanks for all your helpful tips and tricks and cool videos and sharing your very extensive priceless knowledge you sure help some of us out a whole lot and its much appreciated !!! oh love that train blowing its horn by your shop all the time , do you go by that train horn to know when is lunch ? haha have a great day !

Is that rear half of the case able to be removed and put back on without dropping the trans out of the truck? Mine is cracked just above the trans mount and is leaking. I can't find one reasonable. So i will have to have it welded .

so there is no diffrence between the zf6 speeds for the 7.3 or 6.0 besides the front case and the input shafts correct

Im in the process of rebuilding a s-750. I have a new main shaft and new reverse inner bearing race. My concern is that the reverse in bearing race is free spinning on the main shaft. Far as i understand there is a tolerance issue..? Did the reverse inner bearing race free spin on the transmission you have rebuilt in the video?
@westerntruckandtractorrepa13537 жыл бұрын
Jesse Gibboney The one in the video was tight, but I have had a couple that were loose, I took some loctite bearing retainer and applied to the i.d. of the bearing and they seemed to be fine.

Question. If I have a zf6 transmission from ford and 4x2 transmission what do I need to have it done to be 4x4 transmission? It's manual transmission.
@jamesthomson90652 жыл бұрын
It’s an entire different rear housing and output shaft. Your better to purchase an entirely new transmission or truck.

If I’m not mistaken there is supposed to be an oil dam ring which goes in the case between the shim and the input bearing race. It was there before you used the welder to get the race out but I think you forgot to put it back in. I Don’t know how important it is but I would imagine it would be necessary to set the preload on the bearing.
@tdillon196611 ай бұрын
I rebuilt my ZF6 and it's tight when I torque it together, I put the original shim back , I changed some bearings and main shaft, I don't have a gauge what do you recommend. Thanks

grease monkey 101 thanks for the video's they were very helpful, but I just got mine back together and it seems kinda tight I can barely turn the input shaft when it's in neutral but I can spin it by using the out put shaft when I have it in a higher gear but it turns pretty hard , just curious if you think I need to pull it back apart or if it will loosen up with use?
@westerntruckandtractorrepa13537 жыл бұрын
Kervin Sommers They are pretty stiff on the input with new bearings, and that's normal for it to spin faster from the ouput side in a higher ratio. The first one I ever did I thought I did something wrong because it was stiff, pulled clear apart again and couldn't find anything. I think you'll be fine.
@westerntruckandtractorrepa13537 жыл бұрын
+Kervin Sommers Oh yeah that would put to much preload on the bearing, their still pretty stiff turning usually, but yours must have really been stiff.
@kervinsommers19197 жыл бұрын

What was you welding in that transmission
@Jimo2257 жыл бұрын
Im not sure but I think you may have put some things in backwards at 42:50. I am rebuilding the same tranny right now and I took a picture of it before I took it apart and on mine the thick spacer washer goes on before the big bearing. Then the snap ring goes right up against the bearing. Can you check on that? Im I am correct then what would happen if they were reversed?
@westerntruckandtractorrepa13537 жыл бұрын
Jimo225 Thanks for pointing that out, the pickup shifted fine, and from here the owner drove it to Alaska with no problems. When I get home tonight I'll look it up in the service manual, I work on so many things that off the top of my head I can't remember.
@Jimo2257 жыл бұрын
If I am correct and yours was on backwards I think the transmission would still work. The only thing would be that there would be a gap between that roller bearing and the back of the case. The bearing would go into its hole far enough where it would still support the shaft. I am not sure if there would be long term problems with it or not though.
@westerntruckandtractorrepa13537 жыл бұрын
Jimo225 You are right ,I put that spacer in the wrong spot, I was worried so I called the owner and he said it was fine. I am going to edit this video, thank you for pointing that out.
