Welcome back to the channel. This is going to be a channel deep dive into the biggest Turdown in Somerset, Weston-Super-Mare. People asked for a balanced look so I decided to cover the four best and four worst places in Weston. This is preparation before my trip to Bristol. I always appreciate your comments on where we should visit next for Turdtowns. Should it be Wiltshire or somewhere else?

I was born and bred in Weston, grew up in an area that's a 15 min walk from the Bournville (other side of the tracks). When I left the town during my early twenties, my whole life changed. My perspective on the world and myself had shifted so dramatically and in such a short space of time, I ended up quitting my job as a bricklayer and returned to school to redo my GCSEs. Ten years later, and I'm about to finish a doctorate in Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh. I never dreamed that anything like this would be possible for me, and when I recently visited Weston to see some friends, although much of it had changed, there was something stale and boring still about Weston---and it's people. In many ways, it hadn't changed at all. Although the town is fine for many of its residents, I feel like the place can hold others back like it did for me. Some areas of Weston are nice but it certainly is a turd town.

Unless you live in a city the same can be said for anyone leaving and then returning to their home town. Of course there isn't going to be a great deal of change! Unless the buildings got torn down and replaced there's going to be much one can recognise from before. I'm not from WSM, so no, I'm not defending the place. It's just a bit of a skewed comment.

@@diggergig6585 Yeah, you're right. I guess my expectation of change in Weston came from a place of hope or unresolved contempt towards the place. I think it was a bit jarring seeing the same people, doing the same thing, in the exact same way, as if the town was stuck in groundhog day. One change I didn't expect though, many of the local pubs in Somerset have been closing down. I wonder why that is.

I lived in Weston in the 80s as a teen, and while it was never what you would call “beautiful”, it was a verylively little town with a lovely high street and boulevard full of shops and businesses. I visited it for the first time in 27 years just last month, and was horrified to see the high street and town center absolutely gutted. It seemed like every other shop was boarded up, or had been turned into some sort of bargain shop. So sad. Accurate video!

It's funny how you have covered so many places I've lived! When I first moved there from Bath, I walked along the 'beach' and noticed a razor shell semi embedded, I reached down to pull it free only to discover it was a used tampon applicator! That really sums up the place for me, grotty and grim, with a very small number of treasures !! I did my Art degree in Weston and spent a few years living there as a property guardian opposite the old pier, towards Kewstoke - that upper part of Weston has a lot of much nicer building, there's lots of secret nice bits hidden away as you mention - theres a lovely quarry up on the hill which is nothing like Weston town and back in the old days some wealthy folks left a lot of land to be used as parks for the public, so Clarence park is quite a nice exmaple, if you don't mind the crazies I think the council tried to make it like the Brighton to Bristol, but it's not really worked out! By some awful twist of fate, I almost had my first child in Weston hospital, but thankfully had to go to Bristol in the end but I did have to go there afterwards, all the supplies needed after a birth were severly lacking - the nurses were buying sanitary towels etc out of their own money ! What I will say is I met some of the absolute nicest people there, though also the scummiest!!

Nice "review". I used to live there, my ol'man still does so have the pleasure of visiting at least once a month! Some notable mentions! Locking Castle, another "copy and paste" shoebox city that follows the A370 all the way up to the M5, that I called home for a couple of years. The Bourneville was the Car Crime capital of Somerset a few years ago (probably still is!), I remember when I was getting an Car Insurance quote, I mistakenly mentioned that my post code was BS23 and they quoted an extra £150 on my premium compared to the BS22 postcode area, I was actually in..all because the Bourneville simply exists! The Tropicana was an open air water park with slides, wave machine, lovely place....until it closed in the early 90's and has been derelict ever since (no one can agree what to do with the place), accept for a few stints as a "night club" (I went to an all night rave, New Year's Eve 1997 "Kerranga"....great night!), Banksy had an art installation there for a couple of years a few years ago called "Dismaland"! And don't get me started on that bloody Oil Rig (The SEE Monster) that cost a fuck-ton to install (of public money) and then was dismantled 6 months later...for no real reason!! So you're right, the local authority really do like spending the local Council Tax Payers money on absolutely nothing that benefits them!! You forgot to mention that the Grand Pier burnt down in 2005 and was rebuilt and reopened in 2010, however during 2019 (I think) they started charging visitors (of any age and no concessions) £1 each to visit so your family of 5? That will be a fiver please sir!! The COVID pandemic really kicked the arse out of the place and it hasn't really recovered since. Once thing I will say about the place, there are a great selection of "greasy joe" cafes where £5 will get you a slap-up Full English, rack of Toast and a Mug of Tea.......wonderful hangover cure!! Great Video really funny! Keep up the good work!!

I live in a turdtown, Skelmersdale. Built as an overflow for Liverpool, it's copy and pasted box houses from the 60s mixed with industrial estates, random big green areas and then the odd set of new builds that look way out of place. Had an horrendous time at Broadoak school at the hands of the typical inbred chavs. My parents bucked the trend of being kept down by the locals and finally escaped to Bleadon Village in 1990 From there, I moved to Backwell and now live in the beautiful village of Wick near bath. I went from 'Born Vile' to now owning a successful pair of film studios in central Bristol, just proving you *can* escape and climb the ladder. I absolutely loathe going back to Weston these days. You can take the boy out of Weston and, as it turns out, you can excrete the Weston out of the boy as well... Your videos are hilarious! Good video and quite accurate in it's description of Weston, i used to work here back in the 1970s and by the sound of it nothing has changed, can not wait for Bristol Turd Towns, a place i know very well.

I like the place, yes it is run-down and under-invested in but the natural beauty there is stunning, huge beach with Brean down at one end and views across to Wales. There are some wonderful late Georgian Crescents that would cost millions if they were in Bath for example. Michel angelos is a brilliant restaurant and the Lions Ale and Cider festival is amazing. Got to look on the brightside, just needs new renovation and more help for the home-less.

yeo, when I moved from my hometown of Bath to Weston, I was surprised how many similar buildings there were, alright they are mixed in between burnt out hotels and crack dens but they are there and some are truly beautiful

@@primordialpouch565 LOL! :) I also forgot that The Criterion up that end of town is (was maybe, as haven't been in there for a while) a lovely friendly pub. Dauncey's hotel could be a great place if cruise ships could use a functioning Birnbeck Pier).. Or a ferry service to Cardiff..

Very accurate. I grew up in Weston before moving to London 9 years ago, and every time I go back to visit my parents it just gets more depressing. It's always been a bit rough with deeply impoverished areas, but at least Weston high street used to have proper shops. At least M.T Games is still going, I used to spend all my pocket-money in there. If you want to see class disparity in action, go loiter around the adjoining car parks for the Waitrose and the Asda, its surreal. The weird thing about Weston is that the town's wealth is very symbolic. If you're posh then you live on the hill. If you're middle class then you live along the base of the hill. And if you're poor then you live on the flood lands.

WSM is just a depressing place all round. Had an ex-gf from there who took me on a trip home for a weekend. I tried to hide it from her but it was one of the saddest shitholes I've been to in the UK, and I've lived all over the country. MT Games looks great however. Shame I never got to see it, as it'd be right up my street.

It's always been a dump, just proves that living by the seaside doesn't mean you're in a posh area, regardless of house prices. Agree with you about Sand Bay and Kewstoke, probably the best place to live near Weston.

I used to go to Bath every year to stay with my Uncle Joe in the late 1970s and very early 1980s, I remember going from Bath to Weston Super Mare on day trips by train.... I loved it! I was only 8 - 13 years old, and I only remember walking from the station to the beach... not like you describe.

Had the joy of spending a couple of years at RAF Locking. It was in two stints, December 83 to May 85. Then September 85 to March 86. So two winters, and only one summer. Memories? The railway station, and phoning ARC Taxis to get a cab from the station back to camp from Paddington station on a Sunday afternoon. The Cabot, which I think is still open even now, for a few drunken sessions.

I love your channel & content, which is much appeciated, as it is just what I say! Your channel is a bit like a video version of the "Crap Towns" books, which came out a few years back, although it covered all the UK! We live in Burnham-on-Sea, which is worse than Weston-Super-Mare, but luckilly it has some good things around the area here, compared to Taunton(born & raised there!). We go to Weston, most months as there are great restaurants like Italian Ilmichaelangelo's, opposite Knightstone Island, Christopher's Chocolates(a few doors down from your favourite indy shop!), and it has a Waitrose!!! The beach is far better than awful Burnham-on-Sea, too!!!

I lived, for a couple of years, in Kewstoke, whilst I was at Weston College. I agree it’s nicer than much of Weston and would be a decent choice to buy. I remembered the tolled coastal road going there that non-locals ignored the low speed limits signs on and routinely drove off, down the cliff.

I am in the US. About then years ago, I played onstage in a production of “Noises Off” and Weston-Super-Mare was referenced as a place the “play within a play” was supposed to open. I’d never heard of it before that. Then, about five years ago, I caught a Brit show on our local public TV station called “The Cafe”. Strange little show. Interesting, but not very funny, but it was set in WSM.

I absolutely love "Noises Off". It's such a clever play. Sardines anyone? I live in Weston-super-Mare and it is much nicer than the commentator portrays. Roald Dahl, John Cleese, Rupert Graves and Jill Dando were born here. Also "The Cafe" was filmed opposite where I live.

I thought you may have reviewed Locking (village or parklands) as a place to move to. I used to live on the ex raf part just as the gates were open and the locals stormed the bastille and created the parklands estate. Sure it looks pretty now and I think generally attracts a higher income family but time will tell. Great video 👍
